Film legend Tom Savini (From Dusk Till Dawn, Friday the 13th, Day of the Dead) visits Full Sail University to answer all questions about production techniques and film business strategies. Learn more at w.fullsail.edu/...
Most overused question asked of anyone involved in horror: What scares you? Guys like Savini, or King, or Romero, or Barker must die a little inside every time they get that one.
Tom Savini is an absolute legend. Love his work on the George A Romero zombie movies and on all the slasher movies he did and i gotta say that i liked his Night of The Living Dead remake
@@kingkevboi67 If my research is correct, Savini remade the film because Romero had lost the rights to the original (hence the original can be shown in its entirety on RU-vid and can be seen in quite a lot of horror flicks when a character watches it on television) and feared somebody would make a lackluster remake. He even pursued the film company to make sure Savini would direct it.
I agree with him. People are scary. Also, my parents never told me that some people are literal animals and act no different. I'm living near Seattle and downtown is a nightmare. It had been on a huge downturn even before covid19. The animals there will rob you, roll you and kick your ass when their done. I can't stand that arrogant criminal attitude where they throw their weight around acting invincible. IMO there needs to be much more police in downtown Seattle
its weird to hear that people are saying that mr savini is not nice at conventions. i must have met him 10 times in the 90s and he always signed anything you brought for free and was always willing to answer questions and talk about what he had worked on and movies in general. maybe since he is getting older he is just getting crotchety i know im getting meaner as every year passes. he was never anything but nice to me.
@@fullsailuniversity i never really asked any advice as i consider myself just a fan and wasnt trying to pursue any professional acting or spfx but he always liked it i think when my friends and i would show up because he knew he could talk about old horror movies and the like. i will always have fond memories of meeting him.
Wow, we feel like that must have been a great experience for him too! He knew when he saw your group he could enjoy a solid horror conversation! That must have been refreshing. Thank you for sharing with us! That is truly a cool experience!
this man is the creator Jason, no he didn't name the character, nor did he put the hockeymask on Jason's face, but he chose to make Jason deformed to give a better motive to Pamela, she needed her child to be watched every minute because he was a special child, and the only way to show it was through the face and if he wasn't like that he wouldn't have been interesting enough to bring back in the sequel and he would have no reason to cover his face with the hockeymask. Tom is the creator of JASON
Well... you don't have to be deformed to have a character who doesn't know how to swim. Literally everybody has to learn how to swim. Jason being misshapen has nothing to do with anything really.
@@jasonl1942 not sure why you replied so many years after. The deformity is EVERYTHING to do with the character.. what are you talking about? if it wasn't for that, then he'd just be a guy and not bother to cover his face with masks and the franchise wouldnt have a hockey mask, nor so many sequels. he'd have been bland.
Good to hear Lon Cheney was his 1st inspiration becausee Lon Cheney really was the man of 1000 faces. In the era of silent films he did all his own makeup which for a time before prosthetics and CGI is incredible a true genius. Each time he appeared on set he would have his makeup case with him and lock himself into his trailer and come out being whatever he needed to be. I think this has been documented in the Mark Gatiss series A History of Horror.
His gore make up in his first feature (Dawn of the Dead 1979) was unusually realistic because he saw the real deal as a combat photographer in Vietnam.
From Dusk till Dawn put Tom Savini and Greg Nicatero in the same scene. Thank you Rob Rodriguez for saluting a legend and an up-and-coming legend of the horror genre.
He seems like such a genuinely nice guy. I'm shocked that there are comments out there on the internet that say he's mean to people at convention. I mean... Really? This guy?
He did say he's afraid of people at 16:30 . Could have something to do with it. That is, the way he was approached or the type of conversation. He does look like a nice guy but he might not like being swarmed by fans which(I assume) would happen at a convention. And was he there promoting stuff or was he attending? Many factors would have to be known.
I've met Tom 4 times...the most recent was 2 days ago in Manchester...I've had a few things signed from him...and while I can honestly say, he wasn't rude to me, but he just doesn't seem interested in meeting these fans that idolise him but i suppose he is getting asked the same questions over and over so it must be very monotonous. But he just doesn't seem to care about anything other than the money as opposed to people like George Romero, Adrienne Barbeau or Ken Foree who genuinely like a quick chat and make an effort. Savini is still a hero of mine though but it's much better to just watch his interviews online.
He was a little bit of a dick. I had film that I was starring in, At the convention He was cool with me but he was a dick to my friend little bit. I know him as sex machine I had no idea he did SFX! I feel bad for my friend but after he told me I was like holy shit I wish I would’ve got a picture! I love FX and movie props!
What a cool guy.... a workaholic! a visioneer! awesome!! SEX MACHINE Rocks,..... saw several Interviews with him now and must say,................. Awesome Guy!!
The OG of horror! First time I ever seen Maniac (I was only 12, definitely shouldn’t of holy fuck 😂) it scared the shit outta me I legit thought it was real! Watching it again recently the effects are insane and still hold up to this day! Love his work and wish horror movies nowadays did more practical work, Midsommar and Hereditary had some awesome practical SFX 👌
Interestingly, Rick Baker recently mentioned that if they ever did remake "The Man of A Thousand Faces," that he'd choose Brian Cranston to play Lon, and even mentioned this to Cranston when they met at a convention.
Stopped watching after part 5 but wants to bring back Kane Hodder? Kane's film are the worst ones... Ted White and Richard Brooker were the best Jasons by far.
@Devlin Savini He needs to make more movies. Their are many horror movies but few really good ones. If Tom or Tarientino or Rob Zombie or the late great George Romero are not involved they are usually garbage.
I was at one of the first times Tom Savini and George A Romero gave a talk at Full Sail (Winter Park Fl) about film making in 2003. Tom signed my Dawn of the Dead hat. I then got a role as a zombie in Zack Snyders remake of Dawn of the Dead. Im a zed in the last scene when they escape to an island. Filmed at the Jaws ride at Universal Studios. They used a dock location in the ride. I met Greg Nicotero..
3:04 Supposedly one of the workers behind the scenes had a hockey mask laying around and at one point the filmmakers decided to try it out out of creative oppurtunity type stuff.
I will NEVER understand, why they didn't have Tom Savini direct a Dawn of the Dead remake in the same style as the Night of the Living Dead remake. THAT would have been incredible. George A. Romero producing and writing again, and Tom could reprise his role as the biker once more. I will never understand why they never did that.
@@bigboss-yv2nr it is certainly legendary but I have grown to not like it that much. It DOES NOT deserve the name and it should have been its own love letter to George's work, but they should not have called it a DAWN of the dead remake, because it is not.
@Cory McNevin i mean a veteran is still a veteran. Its not like photographers there literally dont do anything. When the time calls in desperate measures. Photographers become soldiers. Its not like they literally give them zero training and leave them hopeless
word of advice: Next time you're documenting something. USE A F*CKING DICTAPHONE! what's the point of recording an "ask me anything" if ya can't hear the fricken questions?
Nowhere in my comment did I state that I could not deduct the question from the answer. The principle of recording of a Q & A session is being able to hear both the question and the answer. But I appreciate your attempt at trolling :)
Its a marketing ploy. If you wanted you could buy filtered water with your name on it. Full Sail is not what it was in the early 2000s, or before. in 2003, a video game degree was 23 G.. today its around 40 G. I have fond memories of playing Quake 2 with friends at Full Sail on a LAN w 15 PCs. Rail Gun for the win.
@@DVincentW Nah, I think 75% of students' tuition went into implementing measures to ensure that they have the best water on Earth on campus, and they intended to keep it that way. There was a scandal with the Art Institutes having hijacked a few dozen pallets of Full Sail water and trying to pass it off as their own, but eventually someone ripped the fraudulent Art Institutes ring label off like they were unmasking a Scooby Doo villain and exposed the road cone-colored truth.
Acabo de ver SCREAM GREATS ¡¡ ME RUCUERDA LOS 80,S QUE TIEMPOS AQUELLOS ¡¡ TOM SAVINI ES PARTE DE MI NIÑES Y ADOLECENCIA ¡ ERA FANATICO DE LAS PELICULAS DE TERROR Y LAS GRABABA EN BETAMAX Y VHS ¡¡ SALUDOS A TOM SAVINI ¡¡👍✌🇲🇽☺️
To Tom Savini I have met you and bought a skull from you. You may never read this but I knew the man you described who did the scanner scene of the head blowing up. He would come to the comic store I managed and talk to me on movie’s he was working on and that head blowing up in scanners. Now he does more CGI and worked on x-men ,Godzilla and others.
This guy did great work for his time. But he wouldn’t make it today. Rick baker , Greg Nicotera , and many more fx guys adapted with the times. Tom didn’t in my opinion. Also I think Fluffy was one of his worst works he ever did. He toots his own horn too much about his stuff especially Fluffy. Tone it down a little Tom. Let your work speak for itself. Would love to meet you tho haha. 👊🏼
