Tom Waits - 9th & Hennepin 

This is the superior version simply due to his decision to repeat "One for every year he's away she says" and then laugh. Goes perfectly with that haunting music.

This was, still is, and always we’ll be pure art. Waits is able to create a sweet bitter sad atmosphere due to his voice that is unmatched

the best lyricist ever. try "who are you", "time" "wish i was in new orleans", etc. the lyrical visions are amazing

Although the mood of this song is very creepy and I don't like listening to it in the dark (Mainly for the line "I crawl into the stairwell and sleep in your hat"),It has grown on me and I think that it is one of Tom Waits most underrated songs.

Poetry is better than most art, skips the senses and goes right to the brain.

@TheSidewalkCipher 9th and Hennepin is a real intersection in Minneapolis. I visited Minneapolis in the mid 1990s, and out of curiosity decided to check out the area. It was largely cleaned up by then. Later on, I was told by a friend who's a Minnesota native that it used to be the red light district.
