I was lucky enough to see Tom on this tour Thinking back it must have been mid 80s so I am not sure if I had ever saw video or film of him performing He ripped through the space like a tornado Phenomenal performer

He has a song called “God’s away on business” that you should first check out and then there’s an awesome video where Tom’s voice from that same song is dubbed over muppets. It’s fantastic.

Neil Young gave the introduction to Tom's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and spoke of Tom as a spirit guide a shape-shifter. Neil said Tom could just have easily been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame or the perfomance artists Hall of Fame. I LOVE this tune. I got a copy of Frank's Wild Years (album this song is from) when I moved into my apartment in the mid 90s. Now his vinyl records are insanely pricey. An original pressing of Frank's Wild Years starts at about 40-50 dollars American. There was a time when my husband went back to Europe and he thought he might stay and end the marriage. I sat up every night listening to that album - particularly Train Song and It's More Than Rain - and crying. My husband did come back, but those songs were a kind of comfort. Great reaction. Love to hear you listen to more Waits.

Another excellent pick 👍 Love how you pointed out that Tom moves like he sounds. You'll see a lot of that same physicality and intensity in his film parts, especially in roles like Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula where he can dial up the weird. The Waitsiness is still there even in more subdued cameo roles like in Cotton Club (!) and Domino. His concert doc Big Time is great. Also chk out Night on Earth, which features his soundtrack. 🔥

I adore this song, and Tom Waits is great to see live. Have to say, though, you might want to give the studio version of this a listen. It's seriously funky, driven by a heavy bass line, drums, a fantastic horn section and god knows what all extra sounds. His vocal performance, while still so unmistakably...Waits...is significantly different from this one.
