After reading ur comment it made me want to go back into this version which is very raw but as u know many people love or hair waits. I tend to love all his music even if at first I dislike a song of his I go back to it and end up loving it. It’s been a day, I had a beer and now it’s clear... I am sharing this version on my youtube because you fellow fans have expressed ur love for this original version (and I tend to love originals over all) but I must say, I do appreciate this version more every day. Yeah! He's been doing that to people since around 1983. It was after "Step Right Up" came out. Reagan was in office, and Tom was pissed. I will never understand why he thought removing the original version of this album was a good idea. He should have left both on streaming services. Anyway I agree this version is far superior to the remastered version.

They remastered this and added this horn section that completely destroys the esthetic of the song. I don’t care if you remaster things but release it as a new version. Spotify just overwrites the old version and calls it a day. I know this means if I want my music to be safe I have to buy every album and I probably have three copies of this album but what shape their in?... not sure. this is such a bummer I have close to a thousand hours of music on my personal playlist highlighting one or two songs from every type of good music and excellent album I have ever come across it would cost be hundreds of thousands to keep it all in hard storage but I see the way things are going and I know I can’t trust digital media if I don’t have a hard copy. Even the amount of amazing RU-vid content that’s been destroyed either by the artist or through bans. This is art... this is stuff people love as deeply as anything. Remasters so rarely make things better and almost always ruin the original feel. That’s what we fall in love with, what we were when we were listening, our history is like a vine that sinks into the sound and we feel all over again. It’s not melodrama to say to change the way an album sounds is to tamper with people’s memories. Love to all! This progressive mindset of destroying the past for a hopeful future is so destructive to anyone with any connection to a past. Stop “improving” things. A remaster should be merely increasing bit rate, just give us closer to analog duplication not changing levels and especially not adding or removing sounds. It all sounds great just push for progress until your life is unrecognizable. And whatever anyone decides is progressive is just twisted and gnarled to the people that lived before. It should be easier for people to live how they wish, add options add abilities don’t just alter them and thereby remove the old way as an option. This is people’s lives.

what a perfect comment. i found this song after watching phil seymour hoffman talk about, among other things, minnows, barracudas, and sharks in "a most wanted man." i've spent fair amounts of time in locales like baghdad, mombasa, nouakchott, georgetown, etc etc. this song is the background music playing in all those dark and raw places.

Remastering is fine, it just aims to improve sound quality without changing the music itself and that's what they did with all his other albums, so those are basically the same. This album is the only one that was remixed - and that would also be fine if it was clearly marked as such and the original was still available. The fact that that's not the case is a real shame.
This mix has grown on me, the sound that everything was mic'd up with entry level equipment in a dusty bar, playing after the headliner band cleared the bar out, they are playing for the staff, drunks and degenerates & whores left

2004 was a fucking great year for music, the white stripes elephant album, this masterpiece of an album, rap was at its last peak and its been downhill since DOOM's MadVillainy in 2006. Then Soulja Boy had to go and invent the internet. Anyway Tom Waits is a national treasure. I've been into him ever since I watched the movie wristcutters.

I've been a Waits man for nearly thirty years enjoying every album he ever made. I've often said once this guy gets into your blood nothing else quite hits the mark. I have long spells of nothing but Tom and eventually manage to tear myself away to go listen to other stuff I have but I always come back. Hoist that rag is one of the few songs I never liked much. Just put it on and it blew me away! I'm on my fourth listen. I'm now going to be up until the early hours listening to those others I might not have been to keen on in the past. This is brilliant. I'm hoping he hasn't retired he's been a bit quiet.

I'll never understand why Mr. Waits thought it would be a good idea to bury Marc Ribot's guitar work way down in the remix/remaster/re-release. I had this album in CD way back when CD's were used, now I have to rely on youtube to hear Marc Ribots masterpiece. Thank you!
He seems like the type to do that just to see who is paying attention. However, this guitar solo seems like the raw sound he often wants. Anyone ever asked Tom about the change? **EDIT** I couldn't find anything specific to this track. Ribot has a history with Cuban music. I wonder if Ribot had input in the remastering process? If I ever find out the answer, I'll come back here and post.
You can be sure he did. He's as much Tom Waits as Tom himself as far as the sound goes. He's been with him since he began making the post-jazz-crooner albums.
I really couldn't say. I guess the best way I can explain it is to say that once I got past my prejudices of what music "should" sound like from a technical standpoint and I just went on with what Waits' songs make you feel like. All of his albums sound like they come from a specific time and place. Rain Dogs, for instance, has a sound that creates the feeling of walking down grimey back alleys in the worst parts of New York. I'm probably not making any sense whatsoever but hell, I tried!
Tom Waits did whatever is the opposite of auto-tune to his voice, then attacks the melody to his work. There are so many, wonderful fractal edges to it, he opens up the weave of the instruments and slots himself in there, all gnarly ends and ragged threads in the jangly, hangly music. As a textile artist, I appreciate his aesthetic, the regular annoys the hell out me and fighting it is the fun. I think it is Mr Waits' fun too, he is an irregular cog making eldritch-turning tunes, tottering down the road, pushing himself a run-down hurdy-gurdy on a three-wheeled perambulator, in hobbledy-hoy clothes and soul beaming out like glass in sunshine. Aren't we lucky?!
I cannot express how much I love this song.... There are too many emotions and expressions and sounds all happening at once.... it's just pure, raw MAJIC!!! (AND it makes me want to buy a guitar!!)
This song is one of my favorites of his, and I've been listening since the beginning. It reminds me of flamenco, which always makes me bawl when I listen. Ribot's guitar combined with Tom's growl just kills me.
