That's the voice of someone who has lived. I try holding on. I let go last year. Hospitalised six times... But I'm still here. Still think everything is pointless, but I'll stay here being pointless... See where what's left ends up... Where the road goes.
Great reaction. You're right. Many times in my life I've had to say if you don't hold on you won't get to the good - it's coming. Waits has been one of my absolute favorite artists since the mid-80s when I was 15. Much of his music is avant garde - but he's obviously capable of writing beautiful standard songs too. His first two albums Closing Time and The Heart of Saturday Night are excellent examples. But I also love him for exploring his wild experimental side and not giving a damn about what was popular at the time. His lyrics are some of the most jaw dropping beautiful poetry ever. Truly one of the great American songwriters - a fifty year career of story telling and music.
Tom is my favorite songwriter. Most people say Bob Dylan is the best American songwriter, but I disagree. I went to see him perform in my senior year of high school, (1976) and that was the beginning of a lifetime love. I have seen him a half dozen times in concert, and I have about 20 or so of his albums. His shows are always amazing. He loves to tell stories or jokes between songs, and talks with the audience. I love this guy. Happy birthday and thanks to Erwin (sp) for the request, it started my morning off beautifully.
One of my favorites. I think I would have him in the top three but its tough to narrow it down Tom Petty, John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie deserves a mention. Going beyond popular music, there's guys like the Gershwin Brothers who wrote some beautiful lyrics. Even if I don't have Tom at the top, just being in that company is incredible. Guy is a genius, and in multiple areas. He's musically a genius, lyrically, as an actor, as a stage performer. He is a true one off.
Lou Reed is great, Zappa has some good stuff and Nick Cave is one of the best. (I know he is from Australia), Gil Scott-Heron is another one to mention.
Bob will always be my favorite but Tom has made his way to second and will probably stay there for the rest of my life. Found him only a few months ago and he’s really made my life better with just his songs and albums.
@@John-ux8zj that's awesome! It's amazing that music is that powerful, isn't it!? I have been so fortunate because I was introduced to him in my senior year of high school (1976) as you probably saw, and have had his music throughout my entire life. If you are that moved by his music, let me tell you that you would have loved seeing him live. There's nothing like it. I went to see him my senior year in a fairly small theater in a college town in Michigan when he was on his 'Small Change' album tour, (still my favorite album of his to this day,) and if you look at the picture on the back of that album, that's exactly what he looked like. He came out on stage with a pint bottle in a brown paper bag in his jacket pocket, and two packs of Old Gold's, and just blew me away. If you haven't heard it yet, his album called 'Nighthawks At The Diner' is as close as you can get to seeing him live. It's a recording of him live back in that era, and it will give you the taste of his show. He loves to talk to the audience, and tell jokes between songs, or introduce his songs with a short description, usually funny as hell, and he does that on the album. I think the full album in its entirety is available here on RU-vid. He's a born storyteller, and that's what separates him from the rest to me. In a lot of his songs, you can close your eyes and picture what he is describing. A great example is the song Putnam County on this album.
On the same kind of theme, REM's 'Everybody Hurts' is also wonderful. Tom Waits is one of the greatest songwriter/storytellers I've ever come across and his unique and iconic voice always seems to compliment his music perfectly. He always writes for the drunken, downtrodden, misunderstood, outsiders in life so beautifully. God bless him.
Thanks so much for reacted to Tom yes his voice is unique, and you also said haunting, your spot on . He is a poet at heart, and he never fails to touch my heart. It would be so great if another generation could discover him . He really is an American treasure.
