You hit it the nail on the head. I've been a fan of Tom for over 40 years and yes, he sees the world differently. He gets past the pretentious and sees the soul.

Man time is so fleeting, one of the greatest out there! Outstanding JAZZ pianist, singer, composer, poet, actor, author and entertainer - and today only repetitive mass-produced goods are listened to. - Thank you for this song and more of it please!!! How about "The Heart Of Saturday Night". He has put out so many great songs.

Thanks for the great review my brother. Tom has been my favorite songwriter since high school, and IMHO, the best American songwriter that ever lived. Someone already wrote it, but that line, “It’s a battered old suitcase, to a hotel someplace, and a wound that will never heal!” Have you ever heard a line that even comes close to that? I doubt it. I have followed Tom since ‘76, that’s the year I first saw him in concert. Even within his own lyrics there’s nothing to compare to that line. This song, and ‘Invitation To The Blues’ that you reviewed about two weeks ago are my two favorite songs by Tom, and they are both from the same album, “Small Change”. I’ve sang along with him to this since it was new, and I still don’t know what half of it means 😅. I know that he met a girl over in Scandinavia somewhere named Mathilda, and that is where he got the name from. The song Waltzing Matilda is a classic Aussie song, but he just borrowed the one line from it, and the music for that line.

Waltzing Mathilda is an Australian folksong called a "bushballad" and their inofficial national anthem. But it all started out in Scotland, would you believe it. And of course, Tom used it to write his own wonderful story. Give the album Asylum Years a listen. Absolutely amazing.
