Tom Waits & Iggy Pop in the film 'Coffee and Cigarettes,' "Somewhere in California" by Jim Jarmusch, 2003 Official Site: www.tomwaits.com/ Official Store: tomwaitsstore.com/ Facebook: / tomwaits Twitter: / tomwaits #tomwaits
The thing is, neither of these guys are anything but passive/aggressive. They are straightforward, hard guys. They're making fun of themselves...er sum'fin'.
@@xoen6 - It is interesting in that sometimes the most resourceful people come from the middle class. Both Jim and Tom seem like they took modest backgrounds and found the magic in music and experience, both created bodies of work that stand the test of time and relate strongly to making something interesting come from the everyday aspects of American life.
Iggy’s goodbye is wonderful. Not wanting to commit to seeing Tom again but wanting to appreciate him and be polite. “I guess we’ll keep... zipping along and I’ll be... I’ll be thinking about you”.
seen this movie over and over again never get bored, wish I could have a smoke next to those two Giants and have a cup of coffee . Thank you Tom Thank you Iggy
This whole movie is so very beautiful, and a great caring portrait of our generation, and all those who represent a more humanist way, and what happened to us in this damn world, what we became,... what it is like to not change the world and then to have to live with that.
It's strange... but I've smoked after quitting for maybe a year, and it wasn't enjoyable, so I put it out after a minute. For me, it was a test of seeing how I felt about it. But I don't know if that was meant in this scene or it something else.
Did anyone notice later in the scene how Iggy’s cigarette is still pretty much full size while Tom’s is smoked down and pretty much gone and then Iggy’s coffee at one point is gone and Tom’s is still pretty much full?
It's for the subtle effect of the first conversation about coffee and cigarettes. It's never just coffee and cigarettes, it's a cultural thing and mostly it's coffee and cigarettes for some, it's cigarettes and coffee for others.
Jim Jarmusch, what a genius director he is 💯 I loved ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’, it is awesome on every possible level and this part is my favorite one along with ‘Cousins?’ one :)
I love both men. Two distinct voices that will never be duplicated. I bet these two gorgeous men with unmatched vocals have no idea how how crisp, cool and beautiful they are.
I remember this when it first came out. So awesome. Love it. We didn’t even have a Taco Bell around these parts back then! Now we got 3 in 5 miles!. So funny plus awkward. And spot on about whatever the message is… Two legends smoke’n heaters and drinkin’ black tar.
This is great on so many different levels. I love it when people are able to illustrate the subtleties of the human experience. I mean there's nothing like a night spent in awkward conversation with people in the same state of ambivalence about their interaction... imbibing copious amounts of coffee. That was pretty much the whole business model that Denny's was based on. But then there's the whole cigarette thing... I guess you'd have to have used 'parking meters as walking sticks' and subsequently gotten to a place where you're 'out there saving lives' in order to understand the significance of the statement 'Well now that I've quit I can have them' I could go for another hour about all of the little human-isms that are embedded in this. It's so mediocre that it's excellent! Thanks for this. I gotta get the movie again.. I love the scene with Bill Murray and his serious delirium
Reminds me at the the heart of 1990 at a college coffee house/diner before starbucks and all the that. chliin smoking , reflectin. etc.....Actually connecting. Just the image
Granted, it is Iggy Pop and Tom Waits. They were among the pioneers of American counter- counter-culture. Waits ,Pop ,Zappa, Beefheart..... They defined weird for the sake of weird.
It is possibly the most awkward conversation between 2 people, but it's hilariously perfect. The intro with Tom describing why he's late is genius. I would have believed him.
Tom sounds like a 100 a day smoker clearing his lungs when singing and Iggy hasn’t stopped playing the fool since school coz no one told him it was silly and eventually people started watching and believing. Btw the same shaky hand barber does their hair.
Iggy Pop goes through a whole list of names that Tom can call him and finally settles on Iggy. So then Tom calls him Jim. Hilarious! This is amusing how they try to impress each other with how hip they are. And they take swipes at each other constantly just for good measure. My other favorite line is when Iggy says he’s got a great drummer for Tom and he takes it like backhanded insult. Like what are you saying? The drumming on my record sucks? Is that what you’re trying to say? Very amusing!
Was it the jacket? Maybe. I like how Jarmusch gave the impression that Iggy left on a Harley. And, that Tom always checks any nearby jukebox. To see if Iggy's on it? Or, anyone he knows is on it? Could be either, I guess, kinda cute.
@Ghost Heart to be fair the older generations were the same, they just acted like repressed douchebags about it. Nothing more pathetic then guys overcompensating their masculinity when really, they just needed a hug or to get pegged.
Experimental film. Not much of story or plot to engage the audience. I think only people who like coffee and tobacco and rock’n’roll likes this movie. Like I do.
The perfect blend of reality and fantasy. Gets me every time. I saw you once in California in 1999 in December at a quiet restaurant. It was all white. You were at the bar, and left once folks started noticing you. But I didn't really know you then, or now, but somehow I like you. Iggy too.
First time I saw Tom Waits was on the Mike Douglas show...he was smoking. hahaha...think that was before they stopped showing cigarette commercials on TV (glad he quit)! I love this clip...it's like two buds, each doin' a bit...like they're each doing a bit, but not together. hehe
I read that the script for this skit was thrown out by Tom who was irritated by the director. Instead, the director told him to channel his 'paranoia' into the skit and this was the result.
Coffee and Cigarettes, a great series of skits between several pairs of greats filmed with the coffee and cigarettes as a common thread for each ... it was a fantastic film!
Ha. He’s not on here either! Lost my shit lol. I was lucky enough to see Iggy live at the legendary palace venue in Melbourne in 1989. It’s still my bench mark concert, the one I rate all other concerts against. A night of blood, glory and screaming guitars. Never seen anything like it. My mate dragged along his brother in law who after the concert spent two weeks in a mental care ward to recover. He never came out with us again lol
