this is one of the greatest ballads ever written. the message is delivered in under two minutes... all of us hopeless romantics can only dream of writing a song this brilliant.

Cried like a baby at the end of Harry's Law and must admit I think I know a lot of music but was not too familiar with this song. It's now firmly in my favourites. So so very very good. Such emotions are aroused by this beautiful song.

I'd never heard this song before the finale of Harry's Law (great show) and almost cried. It is so simple, beautiful and heartfelt that you would have to have a heart of stone not to be moved.

Just saw the final episode of HARRY'S LAW. She sang it, '...silly boy...'. It was only as she was walking away from her ex husband's grave that they played the last part, this version. Never heard it before. It's very, very sweet.
It WAS released on an album, "One From the Heart", released in 1982 as a soundtrack album for F.F. Coppola movie (same name). He wrote all songs, and even one just for the movie, "This One's From The Heart"... the MOVIE was rereleased as a DVD with the soundtrack, a doc of the making of the soundtrack, and unreleased demo takes etc. included on its 'extras', as podpower shared..
Was it not Crystal Gale who sang on the album version? I always thought of it as her song even though i knew Tom wrote it. The outtake version with both of them singing is probably definitive.

I saw this on "Harry's Law" season finale tonight, too. I was shocked but hsppy to hear it, even as sung by Bates' Harry character: to hear a Tom Waits song anywhere (especially outside the realm of my vinyl collection of Waits LPs, at home) is an unexpected but delightful JOY. :-)
simply beautiful! Just heard it on the finale of Harry's Law sung by Kathy Bates (who knew she had such a beautiful voice?) followed by Tom which brought me here. Will miss the show but this song will be with me every time I feel a cool breeze on a hot steamy day...
