When I first heard this song I played it over and over. Every time the imagery changed. The song is less than 4 minutes yet it feels like an hour has past after you listen to it. What an amazing lyricist and troubadour for the late 20th century.
Drove away from my college campus for probably the last time a few days ago. I don’t know why, but playing this felt right. I honestly wept throughout the duration of the song, thinking about the best 4 years of my life. This song made the moment the perfect amount of bittersweet for me.
Thanks to you, Christian, we LOVE Tom, we saw him at our old Golden Bear Café in Huntington Beach from 15 feet away, he was wonderful! He played Sitting On The Corner Watching All The Girls Go By, for his first song, and a cute stripper came out and stripped to her panties and it was really touching!
"Put a candle in the window and a kiss upon his lips..as the dish outside the window fills with rain." For some weird reason that line always hits me right in the heart. I'm strange so sue me.
One of the best poems ever put to music. The chord progression evokes so much emotion. I'm around Mr. Waits age, and I confess I didn't get it in the seventies and was listening to "Time" by the Chambers Brothers instead. And I was listening to Dylan too, who said ultimately that Tom Waits "is the best songwriter ever." His early years are a collection of hauntingly beautiful songs. Easy to see why he's in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.
I can't add anything. your words are more lyrical than anything I could ever say. I hope he never breaks his hiatus from returning to his career as a gas pump attendant.
Beautiful imagery "... and the wind is making speeches and the rain sounds like a round of applause. " Echoes of Bukowski shade his lyrics. A poet lariat.
"Well she said she'd stick around until the bandages came off But these mama's boys just don't know when to quit. And Matilda asks the sailors "are those dreams or are those prayers?" So close your eyes, son, and this won't hurt a bit."
Well the smart money's on Harlow and the moon is in the street And the shadow boys are breaking all the laws. And you're east of east Saint Louis and the wind is making speeches And the rain sounds like a round of applause. And Napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon His invisible fiancee's in the mirror. And the band is going home, it's raining hammers, it's raining nails And it's true there's nothing left for him down here. And it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time. And they all pretend they're orphans and their memory's like a train. You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away. And the things you can't remember tell the things you can't forget. That history puts a saint in every dream Well she said she'd stick around until the bandages came off But these mama's boys just don't know when to quit. And Matilda asks the sailors "are those dreams or are those prayers?" So close your eyes, son, and this won't hurt a bit. Oh it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time. Well things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl The boys just dive right off the cars and splash into the street. And when they're on a roll she pulls a razor from her boot And a thousand pigeons fall around her feet. So put a candle in the window and a kiss upon his lips As the dish outside the window fills with rain. Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart And pay the fiddler off 'til I come back again Oh it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time And it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time
I heard a guy in austin texas playing to an empty bar, unbelievably cool songs. As I've tried unsuccessfully to write songs I asked where he got his inspiration. He told me when he wants to write a song he listens to Tom Waits. Check him out, if you listen for a while you'll hear the waits influence seankeel.bandcamp.com/album/long-ways-till-winter
