Such a beautiful story teller. The stories are not about beautiful things, but there is so much poetry in what he sings.

Tom has been my favorite songwriter since I first started listening to him in 1976. IMHO, he's the best songwriter in America. I know a lot of people say Bob Dylan, or Guthrie, but Tom is my choice. He has so many songs that are stories, where you can sit back and close your eyes, and you can picture everything he says. Thanks bro for your review. I thought you would appreciate that one.

Someone recently had a take on this song - and I was blown away because I've heard this song for 40 years and can't believe I never put it together. On the album I don't think he sings silent night at the start - but this is the first clue. The woman who wrote the letter - he's comparing her to the Virgin Mary. Each are pregnant before Christmas but one is considered holy and the other not, as far as society is concerned. The woman writing the letter tells a story like many battling addiction, which is sad, that everything is great - until she reveals everything is not great. I don't know that Waits confirmed this interpretation but this was an interpretation given by a reaction channel. He does bookend the song with Silent Night "roun' young Virgin, Mother and Child." Waits has a deep love for the common people, particularly in his early music. My grandmother lived in a bad part of Cleveland - off Euclid Avenue - Waits cites a street by this name but of course in a different city and state. Still, I have some of the most loving memories of my life with my grandmother juxtaposed with the fact that she lived in a dangerous neighborhood like the one Waits writes about. I'm sure that has a lot to do with why I love his stuff so much. Thank you, its been a joy to watch you discover this artist.

This song leads he listener down a path of comedy and there is laughter until the gut punch at the end. The saddest Christmas song ever written.
