Tom Welling (Smallville, Lucifer) joins us this week for our 300th episode. He was our first guest, so we couldn’t think of anybody more perfect for our 300th … We catch up on a lot with Welling - the rewards and challenges of fatherhood, his desire to be of service to others, and self reflections on his career to this point. We also get into stressful stories on set Smallville, his heart warming Keanu story, and resisting Brendan Fraser.

you know they wanted him to reprise the Superman role in the CW-verse shows but he said. "I cant actually wear the suit. Its in my contract. No cape. No tights. No flight." Its why in the Smallville finale they had to CGI him in the suit. He flat out refused to wear it. Then on Crisis on Infinite Earths he's like "Sure i'll play Clark Kent... but I wont wear the suit. Deal with it."

@@stupidhandles I don’t think there’s any issue with having your achievements in your home. If he was a recording artist , if he was an athlete, etc…he might have some trophies/ awards. He does podcasting and has some of the memorabilia of what he’s famous for in the background. I don’t think it makes him egotistical to have memories from his profession. Especially since his podcast is centered around the show the show he is showcasing.

I love watching stuff like this from you guys. I've been a fan, and still watch Smallvile to this day since 2003, and It's so surreal to hear from actors we love talk about these challenges and times where you're stressed and have moments like this on or off set. We're all human and any time a well known actor/actress has a stressful moment recorded and released to the public, everyone makes a big deal about it like it's abnormal. Anyway, I thought this was cool how Tom took ownership of the situation, learned from it, talked about it live, and doesn't make excuses.

It hits different when you hear yourself or see yourself from another view. I used to chew gum on stage when my band played to keep my throat from getting dry for singing. I didn’t feel like I was really chewing much just sort of having it in my cheek but then I saw a video and I am just chomping the crap out of it 100 mph and it looked so horrible and unprofessional and I stopped that very day … I realize it’s not coke but still seeing it objectively was eye opening

Christian bale talked about it. It was a hot day. They had been filming for like 13 hours. Everyone on set was hot, tired and pissed off and the director kept going let’s just try one more time. And he snapped. He said like an hour later he called the guy and apologized. He said the director was like okay let’s just wrap for the day. And the take used on screen was one they had done like 3 hours prior.

Having said that, I ask an apology if we handle things quite snarky at times, it is not intentional, it´s something that even the most professional can do from time to time ( I have never blowed up with a customer, but have seen quite a close calls). A scene i was also used in. We had shot the scene for the better part of the day and broke for lunch. Only to find that the camera operator had accidently erased the entire footage we had shot and Tom lost his shit. We got asked to come back to set shortly after and we shot as much as we could again from that point. It made for an extremely long ...tense day.

I forgot the reason why I was called that for 20 years until I hit my bottom and realized Supermans main power was calmness and leadership to sacrifice for others. I now proudly continue that nickname with my Family without any direction from me. Superman/Clark has always been so the right thing regardless of the sacrifice and that's why in a world wide poll asking what symbol do you know, The Cross was number one and S on the chest logo was number two shows how powerful this ideal really is. How many times do we judge someone for a rage out video online? That's like that person's worst moment. And the whole internet treats them like that's how they are every second of every day. I treated some guys at the hardware store like crap a few years back, and I actually went back and talked to the guys and said I was sorry for it. Middle of a project, hungry, stressed, and I took it out on them. The guys were cool about it, but I still look back at my behavior with a lot of shame. We should all be a lot less judgemental when these freakouts appear. Everybody has their moments, but most of us are lucky enough that it doesn't hit the internet.

Tom Cruise had a similar moment during the filming of the last Mission Impossible movie. He blew up at members of the crew for violating Covid protocols. It’s hard to imagine that such a burst of anger was the result of just one incident. What’s more likely is things were building up. Several things may have been going wrong and finally it just reached a boiling point.

I think Cruise's outburst was more understandable and he explained himself well. So many people depended on that production succeeding, on that set and off, that anything short of total compliance was selfishness.

So Cruise blew up because crew were ignoring the health and safety of those around them, and doing stuff that could shut down the production, affecting everyone's earnings? Like him or not for his off screen stuff, he is respected for his proffessionalism and commitment to the safety and wellbeing of his team, and not just those in front of the lens like so many other actors.

I really have struggled with self-awareness my whole life, like body image issues and social anxiety are a huge part of it. But picturing yourself from someone else’s perspective can really help you gain self-awareness and be able to change things about yourself that you would not like, if you were the other person. I’ve done a few bad things in the recent past and I definitely don’t want to be that person.

These two talking has me thinking they need to be Superman and Lex again as voices for animated characters. These versions of the two aren’t horrible enemies to one another, but they talk sh^t and debate certain times about world affairs, politics etc. and they work with each other rather than against each other. It’d be like injustice, but without an evil Superman, instead a Superman and Lex that make the world a better place. Having a person with supes powers podcasting with a rich super genius makes for awesome banter. It legit can make for great action comedy material.

I had some drunk idiot spill their drink on me. I turned around asking if they were blind. They said yes but was also drunk. I laughed and to this day we are close mates. He's great to watch movies with. The stares of entering with a blind man are just too much fun.

Maybe it is RD jr. but Hollywood is full of coke heads. Everything is available to them, and a lot of them just go wild. And it ain’t anything new in Tinseltown. It’s been that way since the 1920’s.
