Talking with Sarah Edmondson of The Vow about the shock and awe of what NXIVM turned Allison Mack into; completely different person.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Sarah Edmondson (TheVow) joins us this week and shares her entire experience in NXIVM, a cult connected with Smallville co-star Allison Mack and known for manipulating its members emotionally, financially, and sexually. Sarah talks about how the cult’s leaders dismantled the intuition of its followers by erasing their moral compass. She also gets into her ‘waking up’ moment that triggered her departure, her experience with the group’s brainwash, and the shock of realizing some of the misconduct after the fact.

Nah, that was Keith. Allison was in my opinion, just had a “pretty, friendly, innocent white girl” look to her, but in reality gullible and she was easily manipulated, then turned into a sociopath for standing by and joining Keith in his sexual abuse against women, including how her initials were incorporated with his initials for the BRANDING they subjected women to. From the story, Michael, told about her and her “friends getting too comfortable” in his home it’s clear he isn’t that type of person, or he would’ve joined that nonsense. Plus he clearly doesn’t give a shit about being crass about her (which i totally support; they disrespected him and kind of tried to intimidate and threaten him in his own home) Tom is “nice” about it, but he also probably didn’t deal with what Michael dealt with…soo, i like and respect Michael’s stance on the whole situation

They probably did that because Rainere was starving them. In accounts I have heard of lost hikers, they will literally grab food from strangers hands when found or take their backpack and search thru it and start eating food they find. The fact that the guy got agressive when challanged could be from malnutrition. Or maybe they were just on drugs. I went 10 months without food once in the hospital. I had fluids called TPN they gave me thru an iv. It gives you some nutrition but not enough. I went from 185 to 121. My skin was grey, I could only walk short distances and I could smell food from very long distances with the windows closed. It messes with your mind. i considered eating food a lot even knowing it would kill me. If I could have eaten safely and someone got between me and food I could have gotten violent. It's suprising how not having food or water can bring out primal instincts.

[20] Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? [21] For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 6:26 In the footage she is talking about, you can clearly see that Keith was using NLP techniques on Allison. In short: he asked what was important to her; she said 'art'. Then he asked why. Then he questioned her beliefs. He tried to disconnect her from her art and attach the feelings she previously held about art (joy, bliss, excitement) to himself. Look at the footage and look at how he moves his hands together with what he says. He points away when he talks about her art, and points to himself when he talks about excitement, joy, etc... The words 'excitement' and 'joy' are allison's own words, which he uses. He asks "What if..." questions... in the sense what if you are wrong about everything. Turning her into a quasi-nihilist. This is described in one of the books by Richard Bandler on NLP. It is also used by Ross Jeffries in his Speed Seduction book. (cfr The Game by Neil Strauss) Keith Rainiere wasn't holy, intelligent or even profound. He just copied manipulation techniques he learned from other people and preyed upon the most gullible.

My friend Josh and I are big fans of John Glover (my favorite Christmas movie is Scrooged), and we were talking for a while about what it was like working with Bill Murray, that sort of thing (though we did talk some Smallville). The whole time, Allison Mack (who was set up next to Glover) was glaring daggers at us, presumably because we didn’t want to meet her. You know, there's a really big difference between someone who can fall into a trap and be brainwashed, and someone who enjoys doing the terrorizing and the damage onto other people. Allison wasn't the victim, she was the perpetrator. Now that doesn't have anything to do with Chloe Sullivan or Smallville, it doesn't ever need to touch the show or the love of the fandom, but not just anyone no matter how low they are or how in need of affection or power or whatever could ENJOY harming other people. You have to have some of that in you to begin with and this cult was about harm, humiliation, blackmail, rape, violence, mutilation, and Allison was second in command. She knew exactly what she was doing. You don't put someone in charge unless they are fully aware of what's happening and you can trust them to take care of things. So let's separate Allison from Chloe once and for all and not put her in the "victim" category. She was not brainwashed. She was doing the brainwashing.

@@Insipid42 this is a fallacy. Most victims of abuse do not go on to become abusers, in the same way most victims of assault don't go on to assault others. It's a myth that perpetuates a lot of shame and stigma onto people who are far more likely to be abused again than to abuse. Abuse isn't a legacy or right of passage imparted onto the abused, it's a choice predicated on entitlement and faulty morals and a society that actively and passively rewards abusers because they are often in positions of power. Victims or survivors are more likely to blame themselves and think they deserve mistreatment than to assert themselves as a figure of dominance and fear, and they have to work very hard to understand that they didn't deserve that treatment and aren't inherently bad. I'll be happy when that myth dies for good and people can start recognizing what truly motivates and creates abusers. A good book on it is Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft.
@kayjayhay
@kayjayhay 2 года назад
I do think she was manipulated and abused. But I think in this case she was a willing tool used to bludgeon others. She wanted to be special more than she wanted to be good to herself and others. She was given permission to hurt others and live by a different set of rules than those she abused, but I don't think that was cultivated in her, I think it was there all along and exploited to the extent she wanted power over others and security for herself... which was quite a lot. Definitely insecure and performative, and being seen as nice and talented and "on" was probably her costume of choice to get close to people in power. Mark Twain said, "It's easier to fool someone than convince them they've been fooled." Even more when you have "skin" in the game. That's why pro football players go broke chasing bad investments with worse ones. And that's how people join a self help group and, after paying lots of money and the giving of their time, chase a return on that investment. Trying to get that return creates a "blind spot" for evil. Instead of cutting your losses, you double down.

@ToadstedCroaks
@ToadstedCroaks 3 года назад
@@Ceares It's also the sunk cost fallacy, in which people will suddenly ( even subconsciously ) realize that they may have wasted money, time, relationships, etc. foolishly; and instead of coming to terms with that and cutting their losses, they double / triple down on it ( even so far as to become emotionally enraged and projected ) in defense of their poor choices. This almost always leads to heavy rationalizing / deflecting, to an almost psychosis, in which all effort is put into avoiding the reality of the problem. It's super taxing on the person, but they just have to seek out / manufacture solstice in that at some point they will be rewarded / vindicated. This is why pyramid / ponzi / religious schemes are so prevalent and successful in taking advantage of susceptible and desperate people ( particularly children, teens and the elderly ). All it takes is someone to promise a better life, to show some affection to someone who has had none, or to catch someone in a fearful moment, to take someone by surprise / off-guard, exploiting them without their knowledge. How many elderly folks get random phone calls about the IRS coming after them, or winning a sweepstakes, or someone they know is trouble, and they need to promptly hand over some personal financial information to get it resolved? They get scammed all the time, and it's extremely embarrassing as they come to the concept that they got swindled; so much so that they will often not mention it to anyone, especially family members who could help them recover that lose. Often they will just hold out on a futile hope that they didn't get conned, they just have to wait for their payout in the mail. It's one thing for a one off occurrence to happen that you regret, it's another to basically upend your whole life in the pursuit of some figurehead/ reward that alienates you from the rest of the world on a daily basis. Just look at today's politics in the US; people still to this day hunker down on their choices / beliefs despite unquestionable evidence that they are harming and lying to themselves. They can't come to terms with that, way too many emotions are firing off at the same time for them to handle dealing with it; it's just way easier for them to stay the course and externalize those emotions into a figurative opposition. It's classic denial. It's the same thing, as you mention, that drives people to stick with brutal relationships, where every rational thought would cause you to run like hell. There's lots of interesting and saddening angles to how people end up at the same problem, of not being able to compel themselves to break away from a path that doesn't require them in any sensible form to keep on it. Something simple as embarrassment or defeatism of a single moment can shape a life for decades. I don't think it can be solved with something philosophically simple like having longer lifespans, less emphasis on short term experiences, removal of poverty / hunger / suffering / etc.. There's something intrinsic in the concept of time and mortality itself that causes us to behave in very counterproductive and illogical means. It's like our base instincts of survival cannot adequately co-exist in parallel to changes in our social and intellectual advancements. I think it's safe to presume / agree with some theories that our technological and social advancements as a species are not aligning with our physical evolutionary development. We are essentially stagnant as a species genetically, and are unable to properly utilize and cope with the evolution of our creations. It's not to far off to say that at some point we will resemble chimps playing with instruments not made of their own hands. I imagine the perplexed thoughts of other alien life wondering how we even got to the point we have, or our / a future civilization on earth not being able to believe that we were the ones capable of making all of these things. But that's going off on a tangent.

I have friends who were involved in cults for several years before choosing to break from them. Several friends, different cults from each other. All of them were spiritually aimless when they got involved, and it was like they had discovered a life raft in the middle of the ocean. People who are constantly searching for self-definition or have a need to feel greatly significant are easy targets for cults. Cult or "spiritual leaders" (by which I mean those who make the journey about themselves rather than helping others to attain understanding of a higher power) seem to have or promise those answers. It's easy to give oneself up to the relief that someone out there understands who you are and knows exactly how you fit into the universe; that you have a purpose as part of something huge and amazing. Not only that, but you fit into a family of like-minded people, whereas your family of origin never quite got you. I think our societal myth that one must suffer or undergo trials to gain anything of value contributes to one's surrender to a cult. You might normally refuse to do the things being asked of you, but if they are the price for enlightenment, approval, monumental importance in the universe... then they are trials worth undergoing.

Michael Rosenbaum seems like a genuinely great guy, seeing how he is as a person, with the patience and sensitivity to put up with this to an extent, but also to stand his boundaries. It’s very professional and kind of him not to talk dirt about her behavior and being understanding and compassionate.

Once news of this seismic event came to light I was heartbroken. Not only for the victims and their families. But for being a super fan of Smallville. Listen I know that's like on the bottom of the list of things to be upset about. But what Allison did on the show was amazing. The character of Chole Sullivan was an inspiration/role model to girls watching her for 10 seasons of Smallville. I tried so hard to have either of my daughters named Chloe (my last name is Sullivan)just because they to would have a role model with the same name. The name Chloe Sullivan I heard enough on the show that it flowed off the tongue so well. However, my wife won she named our daughters. But I still couldn't wait til I can show them Smallville so show them their "cousin" Chloe Sullivan lol. But now just like anything I see with Kevin Spacey or anyone whom had a horrible secret in their closet come to light, the viewing experience isnt the same. I hope and pray all the people whom were hurt by this cult get the help they need and bounce back to their respected lives. 2021 will be the year of healing!

So well said I too was a fan of Chloe aka Allison Mack also from honey we shrunk ourselves... I still like the show/series but what she’s done is extremely disturbing and disgusting. Actors aren't their characters. Chloé is completely different from Allison Mack.
@seansullivan1101
@seansullivan1101 3 года назад
@@jujumpe7374 agreed! But think about like this , I would say majority of viewers see her picture and headlines saying etc.etc. They immediately associate Allison with Chloè Sullivan the actress from Smallville, firstly because that's her biggest body of work and secondly because frankly most people don't know the actors real names. They call them by the character they embodied. Also now in this cancel culture and me too movement. Smallville IP will suffer a little. WB/CW will quickly and quietly sweep this under the rug and bury her name along with it so the legacy of Smallville is upheld. Johnny Depp is going thru something similar in the terms of name tarnishing at the moment. His entire brand/projects are in jeopardy because he is now labeled a "wife beater" per a judge! Plus , Amber Heard is working on WB projects aswell. Two actors , 2 big IP's. Do they save face and recast? Actors make the same mistakes as us everyday folk. But this cult thing Allison has gotten into is unforgiving.

@@seansullivan1101 Yes I personally don’t agree with that Johnny Depp situation completely, from what I’ve seen and heard from that incident if anything Amber was putting her “hands” on him. I personally can’t stand the double standards and hypocrisy when it comes to these types of incidents. His whole body of work and legacy/catalog is at while she gets two show/series in the works. She is no “saint” the tapes I heard of how she was treating him were disgusting. Not saying that Johnny is completely innocent but this woman was physically violent towards him it’s recorded and it happens often to men. Which still isn’t talked about enough of how men are and at times victims of domestic violence and abuse if not emotional abuse...😐

What you're describing is what you find when a background agenda is disrupted. So, they had plans to do something, or involve you in something, and it wasn't going according to plan. The guy who got angry most likely had his part completely suspended, and that pissed him off. The likely reason Allison called a few days later, rather than more immediate was b/c there was no way to salvage your involvement, although the delay says there was a strategy working in the background to figure out how to approach you again, or keep you in their plan, but they realized they had nothing. Good thing you told them to go. VERY good.

The odd part about the whole idea of being indoctrinated after three days is that I’ve been in more than a few experiences either through traveling or joining a foreign military and completely turning my life upside down my motto would always be “after three days I can get used to anything.” It always helped me mentally get through tough experiences but I guess that coin has two sides.

They never would’ve made it to the point of grabbing pots out of cabinets if it were at my home. People need to respect the boundaries and if they don’t, remind them immediately and tactfully. If tactful doesn’t work, be who you must to get the point across as unambiguous as possible! Your home should be where you feel the most comfortable and secure.

Very interesting take on being *indoctrinated* into anything. When we are small children, we are indoctrinated into family vales, into friends' circles, into society. As we grow, we gravitate to places that fill gaps in our lives. And it's even easier when you are warmly accepted into that group. People say, *throw the book at her*, but Allison obviously had missing parts to her life that this group helped (evilly) to fill. It changed her. Anyone that has been extricated from a cult knows how long the deprogramming takes. But we see people in the US that join cults or ISIS/al Queda, or other religious organizations, or even political affiliations, becoming excessively obsessed with their values. Allison has to pay for her crime, but she's as much a victim as a perpetrator.
