Tomb Raider - Review 

Bashes the game every chance it gets...then gives it an 8.5 rating.

One of the best linear action games in history, but the reviewer has a point about how her transformation from fearful girl who cries after being forced to kill one guy to someone who kills in near genocidal proportions is somewhat of a disconnect, even in video game terms. I guess it would have been more logical if the game focused more on evading bad guys than taking them out like you're Rambo. But still, it's one hell of a game, and noticeably better than almost all other games in that category. I had tons of fun playing it.

It's not the fact that she's a one man army. It's the fact that the story says that Lara is shaken by killing, while the gameplay says otherwise.

I disagree with some of the points the reviewer made. I think this games bloody awesome! 9/10 in my book

yeah but Drake is never portrayed as frail or even inexperienced. From the very first minutes of the first game , Drake has always been Rambo, swiftly killing his enemies. In a game were you want to show a desperate coming-of-age story, having the character be devastated about taking a single life one moment to mercilessly mowing down foes in the next is abrupt and detrimental to the character development.

That's a very good review. I'm impressed GT had the guts to say it like it is. Lara Croft was once a huge pop culture icon and seeing this character turned into a cold vicious killer rather than a tomb raider just doesn't seem right but that's the world we live now unfortunately.

Don't often hear this enough so, hats off to the narrator for always doing such a good job. He never sounds like he's reading from a script.

Gametrailers is really the only review channel that I feel isn't hampered by either caring what game companies think or being paid off.

Nathan Drake isn't supposed to be bothered by killing people while Lara is. The devs made a big deal about how her first kill would shock her but in the final game, she ends up killing people five minutes later.

He's right, this game should've just had Laura being immediately rescued and going home to talk about boys with her friends and go shopping at the mall. I mean seriously, it's a video game, and the player is going to shoot to kill unless forced into stealth. You can't really fault the narrative for the action of the player, especially when the theme of the game is survival. Would a handful of voice overs of Laura crying over head-shotting someone have made it more palatable?

Maybe this game is a perfect example of where general violence in video games has led us. It's no secret that Tomb Raider borrows from many of the most popular games out right now. And what do most gamers clamor and pay for? We ask for better stories, yet the market mostly buys shooters, tomb raider is a good example of the gameplay we as the gamers have essentially told them to go.

I agree with this review completely, I loved it for the first 30 minutes but I would have liked it to keep the survival feel.

I don't understand one thing , how is she so strong and fit while maintaining such a perfect hourglass figure ?

To be honest, I find this Tomb Raider story more believable. Even if one minute Lara's in shock after killing a deer and then going around getting headshots by the dozen. I wouldn't really take the plot seriously if I found myself once again killing a T-Rex with nothing but two pistols but this time in a 18 rated, aimed at adults game. But that's just me.

Moving Forward: The Movie: The Ride: The Game

multiplayer is tacked on to games now-a-days for two reasons. the first is to simply increased the perceived value of the game so more people will think of buying it. the second is to increase the time in which a person keeps their game. the latter is because used games aren't profitable to anything but the game retailers ( i.e gamestop, eb games, et.) so the longer they can keep it in your hands and off the "used bin" the better. It's a win-win for the publishers.

Because we all know that professional soldiers who kill many many people are entirely unscarred by their experiences O.o

8.5 seems relatively high, considering the game's flaws were the only things mentioned.

Wait a minute... all the violent finishes are reserved for the last 3 chapters!! How is that an "Instant Transformation"? Just because she has to kill or be killed, it does NOT mean she has to like or encourage it. I think they had the PERFECT balance where by the gameplay is violently realistic, but her identity is kept sacred so we don't give kids the wrong ideas. Sacrificing gameplay for the sake of being a nice fragile flower would have bombed!! The Actress Camilla Luddington had reservations about her rendition of Lara & she even refused to say the line "Go to Hell" after killing a man in cold blood with the newly found WWII Rifle, which is why you hear that line in an American accent instead! Just for once, we get a game which takes violence very seriously on both accounts, & all it gets is flak? How about a little support for new ideas?

I dont care about some "rambo" complex thingy.Game is AWESOME and Lara is at her best, her animations and expressions are lifelike and you feel like a real explorer.Gongrats to the voice actor of Lara too.

I've not played the game yet but I'm sure it's hard to hinder you as a player whilst her as a character is afraid to kill. I'm glad they at least show her difficulty dealing with her first few kills since that's important, but I'm sure we've all been numbed by FPS' too! Though, I'd like if it had a hardcore option like Fallout where you need to heal/eat etc, else your ability falters. As an option though since for some this would create more immersion, but for others at the cost of "adventuring"

It's not that she's a one woman army, it's that her character development throughout the cutscenes completely contradicts her characteristics during gameplay, something you don't see in Uncharted. It's bad writing at its finest.

The way I see it is that Lara has to become accustomed to all the killing for survival purposes. She knows it, we know it.

The problem is the jarring inconsistencies.

The game looks great, just it looks like I wish between cut scenes and gameplay that it didn't look like two completely different characters. It looks a bit like Far Cry 3 to me, but that is just me.

She quickly changes. She even said so herself after her first kill "It's scary how easy it was".

The last Laras boyfriend was Kratos so don't complain about if she is so violence

But Far Cry 3 does it a hell of a lot better than Tomb Raider. It's clear that the island changes everyone who stays there for too long and the fact that Jason's opinion about killing changes drastically through the game and is noticed by his friends makes it much better than the way TR handled it/

I am shocked that this is an m rated game, Tomb raider used to be more on the "fun" side, now it's a gritty uncharted.

they criticized the crap out of it, and then they gave it an 8.5? Am I the only one confused?

I heard a lot about this game and wanted to see the review to see how it was. I don't watch reviews of only those games that I intend to buy

If I want to watch somebody deal with the trauma of killing someone for the whole time, I'll watch a movie. Video games don't need the continuity that other media needs.

Love the game. Best TR ever. Although some of the points that he made I have to agree with. I do think the gameplay compromises the story a bit and the secondary characters are just not interesting or original. But the game is huge, filled with collectables and tombs, platforming, puzzles, cinematic moments and the combat is really good. Lara herself has improved in my opinion not only in her physical design but in personality. Crying and being vulnerable is not weakness, that's just being human. Its seeing Lara picking herself up and overcoming her fears and becoming a stronger person is where the game truly shines and that is true power. Can't wait to see where this game goes next in Rise of the Tomb Raider :)

He sounded very over negative in the review before giving it an 8.5. The game looks deserveing, but I'd like to see a more classic style Tomb Raider in the next gen. I felt by the other crystal dynamic lara games that they never wanted you to get stuck on a puzzle. But people should ignore me because I loved angel of darkness even though the controls sucked.

After I finished this game, I think this is one of the best game in 2013 . This reboot is very good .Very good gameplay ,Very good story .The best thing is Lara has more reasonable boobs and bottom . But In pc version TressFX is sucks for Nvidia users,steep framerate drops ,bugs and unnatural .

I think GT is being really harsh! I find the game to be a lot of fun and a really great way to reinvent the character. It's Hunger Games meets Survivor and I think it works really well. I think it deserves a 9/10.

Too much killing. Not enough tomb raiding. Not enough survivability. Seriously how she doesnt break any number o bones or gets severe wound infection or even hypothermia is incredible. And the athletic prowess is incredible. How she can haul herself those heights is staggering. BUT. It is a competent game. You will actually care for her. i agree with 8.5 multiplayer is boring as f#£% tho

I feel like the gameplay should be slower. the mechanics of this game seem to be screaming for something more akin to the last of us rather than uncharted. the story and setting are placing such a huge emphasis on survival but I never feel like the gameplay matches those elements like the reviewer was saying.

Still big enough to sell over a million copies in 48 hours -_- dude i don't really care, i'm just saying Tomb Raider does well because it's got a strong fanbase. When did 8.5 become a bad score?

It's really good, it is just reviewers tend to focus on the negatives more than the positives. In this case there was a big focus on her needing to survive and being vulnerable, which she really isn't throughout the game. Which is why this review is such a nitpickfest!

This game is awesome! The graphics are gorgeous (even on consoles), the island is beautiful and there is tons to explore! I beat this game on the Xbox and on the PS3(I thought the game looked better on the PS3)...and the game is incredible in any console! It deserved at least a solid 9.0 in my opinion. Definitely worth it checking out!!! Trust me, you wont regret it...

I really don't understand why people bitch about Lara killing the Solari, when the game goes out of it's way to establish them as nothing but cannibalistic, raping, murdering, demon worshiping assholes. Also, at there are several scenes in the game (after the "first kill") where Lara tries to talk to the cultists and reason with them only to get shot at. At some point you just have to say "fuck that. It's me or them."

The game is inferior to Uncharted in pretty much every way. Anyone who's played both games can attest to that, unless they're biased. I didn't say the game was bad, but it's and average game garnering scores way to high than what it deserves. Even if you only have a 360, the games is a 7 at best.

yeah but the game also EXPLAINED where her experience w/ guns and acrobatic moves come from. His somewhat 'mentor' of sort, that dude, taught her those things (along w/ her father). At first, someone would be shocked to kill someone, but skill will take over your mind and you would take it easier than other people who didn't have the training. This happens even in real life. The game did just that but some ppl had to bitch about it...so they brought that up.

Great review. The game, while good, received too much praise and not enough criticism. I felt the narrative was just cringe worthy. I see some people complaining about the reviewer's reference to the violence in the game. He isn't upset with the fact that there is violence. He's just trying to get across the point that it's hard to believe the moments where Lara acts all emotionally vulnerable and as if she is out of her depth when she just utilized the muzzle climb of her assault rifle to blast a man from his abdomen all the way up to his face and does so repeatedly. Violence like that is just over the top, gratuitous and laughable with a character of this type. If they wanted to keep the violence in line with the type of character they TRY to present her as, don't make it so over the top. Have Lara do what's necessary and nothing more. The icing on the cake (as far as the narrative is concerned) is when you beat the game and text reading "A survivor is born." is shoved into your face. I just remember looking at my television asking, "Are you serious? Did they really just do that?" It's like they threw an advertisement for their game into the ending of said game. Why in the hell would anyone do that? Did we really need to be told that? As if Lara constantly saying, "Okay Lara, you can do this" wasn't enough to let us know that this isn't the way her expeditions typically play out. Ham-fisted is probably the best way to describe the narrative in this game. I hope Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn't pull the same crap.

This is literally the last Gametrailers video I will ever watch. Every single review I have ever seen from them has been completely biased and uneducated. They emphasize game faults that only they consider to be a fault. In this particular video, they mock the attempt to show emotion in Lara's actions. She is clearly upset when she kills her first animal and human. She is then forced to overcome her emotions and continue killing to survive. What's so hard to understand? Gametrailers is a joke...

I JUST beat the game. I thought it was really good.

Should we take out all the killing in the game? I could understand if it was just a story or a movie how your thoughts could be implemented, but it would be a terribly boring tomb raider game without the mechanics it has. Another game might be able to tackle this idea. As it stands, if lara only killed one or two people and all the gameplay was scavenging tombs, I'm sure the reviewers would have lambasted it for that.

I felt the same in Far Cry 3

eh the characters all had a reason for behaving as they do. Especially the woman. The review was pretty spot on. It can be applied to the new tomb raider too.

Yeah and alot of people buy Beiber albums, or play COD...it just means people like simple, easy, things with little substance. This is isn't in the same genre as PoP or Darksiders, or other modern platformers. Thing is, like I said I don't even like Uncharted that much..I'm much more of a action game fan, but after playing both games, this is just a a dumbed down Uncharted in EVERY way. Just because you people like it, doesn't make it good.
