According to some statement from the developers, the game apparently was to depict Lara Croft as someone you want to protect. That explains all the gratuitous screaming and the pain she goes through, bordering on fetishism. You're supposed to feel sorry for her when she gets impaled on a spike because you didn't push a button in time. But why the hell would I want to PROTECT the soon-to-be legendary Tomb Raider? She's not my daughter, she's my avatar. I want to fricking BE the Tomb Raider! Let's make a comparison: When I play "Batman: Arkham City," and the Caped Crusader gets shot by some random TYGER operative, I don't think, "Aww, poor Bruce Wayne. How will you save the day now?" I say, "GODDAMMIT, just wait till I restart this mission. I'm gonna sneak past your ugly thermal goggles, disable that guy with the Detective Mode jammer, and shove this batarang up your ass sideways, you stupid goon!" You know why? Because I'm not caring for Batman in that game, I AM Batman. I want to take out the Joker and bring justice to Gotham City. I want to romance Talia after the game ends and conceive Damian Wayne. And if I'm bored, maybe then I'll help Mr Freeze cure his wife and reform... after I kick his ass some more for making me go through that boss battle in New Game Plus mode.

Montesama314 There's also the fact that by making us play as Lara, we are automatically invested in her survival on some level, if only because she has to survive for us to continue playing. But yeah, all that gratuitous violence that is inflicted on Lara did make me feel kind of dirty and ill, especially since they're all directed like a porno. Get as close as possible, so that we can see every last detail of how that spike penetrates Lara's body. Of course, I still felt more sympathetic towards the villain than Lara by the end, because she's just an awful person in this game...

MoffMupp It's funny how, from my point of view, the game is bigoted towards BOTH sexes. To offend women, it takes a powerful, independent character like LARA FUCKING CROFT and puts her through the "please protect me" filter and displaying-and I can barely bring myself to TYPE this word anymore-misogyny. To offend men, see the example with Lara VS Nathan, and keep in mind that it depicts murder as somehow more acceptable than rape. I don't want, like or care for female protagonists that I have to defend, not even sexually. (I kind of am turned on by the tough ones, so there's a bit of a conflict of interest, but it's working in favor of a good cause, so ignore it if you must) LARA CROFT IS NOT SOMEONE YOU HAVE TO DEFEND!!! SHE IS THE KIND OF LADY WHO GOES IN, MOWS EVERY FUCKING BAD GUY DOWN, AND THEN LEAVES AS THINGS EXPLODE BEHIND HER!!! (I don't remember the tombs exploding behind her, though, so...eh.) SHE IS NOT THE KIND OF PERSON WHO WOULD JUST TAKE ALL OF THIS SHIT!!! *starts foaming at mouth, nose starts bleeding*

It gets even better when you realize the VERY controversial comments about the rape scene that the developers mentioned in an interview on E3. One of the reasons they removed it, they said first: They don't project themselves into the character. They want to protect her/be her little helper compared to being her like all male characters. So yeah... Pretty accurate there. He then goes on to talk about the rape scene. They then take their fuck up and interviewed a woman who was doing part of the development (yes, a paid employee for the company) and had her talk for 45 minutes about how she looked up to Lara Croft and did all her archery because of her. Which I sighed, turned away, and walked from any chance of the game. EDIT: He also said, I can't remember exactly word for word, but traumas like rape make women stronger and better characters.

@@khamjaninja. I'm currently playing the sequel to the Tomb Raider game (still in the first half of the game, I guess, but there's SO many side missions of "do X things" that I've forgotten what I was doing next), and I'm going, "okay, so your dad died, and you feel you have to continue his journey to feel closer to him. Have you tried therapy?" She keeps feeling a compulsion to do this, and it's just not needed for her character. She could have just gone, "the island changed me, and I want to uncover every mystery there is, and OH, this weird villain organization's in the way? Lemme kick their asses." They don't NEED all this daddy issues drama, and frankly, I don't care. There was only one character I ACTUALLY was interested in from the first game, and it wasn't Jonah who keeps with her through the trilogy--it was Lara's friend Sam from the first game. In the ending, she made it out of a mystical ritual, nearly inhabited by the spirit of an undead witch queen from Japan. THAT sounds like a character we should be bonding with over shared traumas in a terrifying but ultimately heart-pulling buddy adventure. Instead, so far, it's just Lara, talking to herself at campfires and to whoever is giving her missions.

@@khamjaninja. thank you for articulating part of why I hate this game with a fiery passion. It really oozes “let’s make it feminist (but not really) because we don’t want to be subversive enough to ostracize more right wing male players while pleasing a culture which is currently in the middle of maybe almost taking women’s rights seriously” the irony is that older more sexualized renditions of Lara-while still not having much of a character arc, had heaps more agency, personal charm and likeability. I’m not talking about her huge boobs, although I’m sure that drew many people to her back then 😅… I mean the fact that she was a witty, classy, calm femme fatale who was very intelligent and educated. She was a bit on the insane adrenaline junkie side, which made for good humor but also made her compellingly exist in the margins between bravery and foolishness. Going back to agency though, the old Lara didn’t HAVE to do anything, she was so utterly free that she stared death in the face on the daily without fear. She was the batman of female video game characters, beloved for how untamable and badass she was. Beloved also for how she genuinely just loved her work. She was obsessed with mystery and attaining new knowledge and experience. She wasn’t doing it for a male relative… She was doing it for herself! In her old biography it expressly says she was rebellious towards her parents. So why they made a reboot and said “ok let’s start with a game where she’s a spineless wimp of a kid” is beyond me. It satisfies basically no one, correct me if I’m wrong.

I just don't understand this game. I know that the old Lara Croft was a bit sexualized, but their answer to that was to basically make her a sadist's squeaky toy. I want to go back through the game doing a tally, but I'm fairly certain that around 50% of Lara's lines are variations on "Ow" or "Whimper."

Yahtzee, actually it does explain that Lara had survival training prior to this and went rock climbing with her mentor often. But I truly agree that they really should have had a survival mechanic with scavenging for food, med kits, and having to find shelter before the day ended, or at least have an alternate difficulty mode for it.

After getting 20% done with this game, here is what I concluded so far. 1.) You can easily shoot dumb animals because they think you're not going to shoot them. 2.) You can easily shoot down dumb enemies because it requires almost no effort to take them down. Gunplay adds nothing new, and you can only die occasionally if you get careless or drop your controller. 3.) The bow isn't very fun to use because it functions like a crossbow rather than an actually bow. Arrows fly like a bullet so there is no need to actually aim. 4.) This game picked a survivalist theme, but it didn't bother to have survival mechanics. 5.) Too many quick time events. 6.) It's fun to move around and explore, but it doesn't making me think. Nothing in this game makes me think. Need to find a document conveniently placed on my map? Mark it on the way point and put on survival instincts. Done. Need to get out of a situation? Quick time event. Done. Need to make an impossible jump? Wait for the game to go in slow motion. Done.

+Mike Fogarty Actually, the enemies seem so inept, it actually works against me. It's cartoonish how closely I keep missing them, because I expect them to go in one direction, and they jerk around like headless chickens in the last milisecond. I'm not even kidding, their panic and confusion is by far my biggest challenge with them.. Also, I've never seen auto regeneration this fast. Even when enemies got me almost dead, they would never get another shot off before Lara fully regenerated in what feels like 2 seconds. How can you take the survival aspect and Lara falling on her face every two minutes seriously when she heals so fast, I can cross a field through heavy machine gun fire and be fine? This brings handholding to a new level, and the survival genre is the last that should do that.

Agreed. I played this game for like an hour and all I did was watching cutscenes and doing QTEs. The climbing is also too cinematic, like Uncharted, i.e. watching Lara losing her grip and falling down because the ledge she was holding on to broke. What a piece of garbage.
@TyrBarghest
@TyrBarghest 10 лет назад
I felt like the weakest point in this game was the characters. No one was likeable including Lara. There was a cutscene in the game where she had a clear shot at Mathias. I thought for sure she was going to take it or I would have to take it (cause y'know, no game nowadays can go through a cutscene without throwing in a Q.T.E.) but instead, she shoots some random guy, *not* the leader of the crazy people. That right there made me hate her.
@censor2112
@censor2112 10 лет назад
also not to mention that gameplay lara does not fit in with cutscene lara or the story characters. In the first 30 minuets lara has been beartrapped,impaled by a spike,shot about 50 times and falling off of anything every 5 minutes and then all of a sudden a character is bitten by wolf once and is now dead. So we have a super hero inside a world where if you step on a pebble you explode

Forcing a person into danger is one thing, but having them choose to go into further danger is true development. The hero's journey requires the hero to choose to accept the call, not fall into a pit where the only way out is accepting the call. Jason Brody and Captain Walker are great examples. Nothing forced either of them to make the horrific choices that defined their characters, and that made us either love or hate them all the more for it.
@JeremyHolmes
@JeremyHolmes 10 лет назад
Huge flaw alert... Nothing forced them? Let's see how much fun these games become if you don't partake in any of the objectives tied to the main storyline. Any game I've played that allow you to "choose" to participate Leave you with no story or ending if you choose not to participate. Either way it's the same, unless you like roaming around environments doing side quests or nothing at all. You, the player, force the character because there is no point in playing otherwise.
@DeathMessenger1988
@DeathMessenger1988 10 лет назад
Just don't forget this is basically Lara's origin story. Origin stories choose the protagonists, not protagonists choosing origin stories. So Lara being the cosmic plaything is accurate, since this forces her to become the badass Tomb Raider. Nothing happening in the game is really HER choice, except fighting to survive. Which, when you think about it, it's what LIFE is about, really? You're trapped in a world full of nutcases repeating mistakes of the past generations and making new ones and you have no other choice but cutting your way into wealth or at least pleasant stability while hoping the world won't blow up because humanity are jerks and the universe an infinitely bigger jerk.

I actually enjoyed the game (mostly) and I'm having fun with the collectibles bit right now but everything you mention is pretty spot on. Though there's another thing that bothers me. Pseudo spoilers ahead: Every death of a character related to Lara's party carries absolutely no weight to the player. You mentioned that it doesn't really help her arc, but to her (as far as we know), these people are dear to her, but to us, they're just some people that DON'T want to kill you. It did little to set up these characters and their relationship to Lara. The most we get are those videos from Sam's camcorder, and even then things are hazy. Perhaps I'm looking for too much in a game that didn't plan to delve that deep into the human relationships. It might have tried, maybe, but I couldn't really tell in the moment of things. The most I was worried about was survival and how I was going to get through the next five minutes. In the end, I still find the game enjoyable, but I just wish there was more to the characters than just "guess who's going to die next".

Honestly, I felt immersed in the game. The characters all had a personality and so it was quite interesting. Sure they were stereotypical archetypes, but it wasn't bad, just there. The only character that I felt nothing for was a certain character we know that died from a certain incident with gravity. Most of the time I just kept thinking to myself I was going to slaughter the big bad in such a way even Kratos would think "whoa, TOO FAR MATE!" I even went so far as to use only a bow and pistol unless absolutely necessary for progression ala obstacle, just so I could feel a godly might saying "TASTE MY HEADSHOTS FROM ARROWS AND PISTOL ROUNDS YOU PUNY SWINE!" I swear, 85% of the deaths were from what you might call "structural cranium failure". Honestly, I enjoyed the game to death, but it felt empty, completing it in only 15 hours tops, as well as getting 70% effortlessly.

It was a pretty fun game in my opinion, but there were many ways they could have improved upon it to take it from "decent" to "spectacular". The mechanics, as Yahtzee points out, are introduced and then promptly forgotten about. Some of the violence directed towards Lara was a bit over the time, and for a game that's generally known for it's puzzles, I would have much rather have had intelligent and ingenious ways to avoid combat or solve problems. However, many of the injuries she obtains, the only notable injuries of which would be the pipe through her side, a bear trap, and a tumble through the forest. The pipe and bear trap, while looking severe, can actually be explained away as being superficial, while the tumble through the forest can merely be stated as luck. I know from experience that the human body is both incredibly fragile and incredibly durable at the same time. The combat itself is decent, though a couple of the weapons, while they have their niche uses (like the shotgun) are just sub-par compared to the others (specifically the bow) that the only time you really ever use them is when the game forces you to overcome certain obstacles. As for the plot and character development, I do have to point out, that being in that situation, having only a single freak out after killing someone would be fairly normal. Any person, you, me, or anyone else, if confronted with a similar situation, are going to pretty much do one of three things. One: You freeze, which means, you die. End of the story. Two: You try to flee, where you may escape, you may not, but you don't fight, which leads to Three: You fight back, using whatever means available. And you continue to do so until you're safe. So Lara's character development, for her ability to take so many lives, is both believable and understandable. That said, there could have been far more to her development, as the only real choice she really makes is decided to rescue her friends. Everything else just kinda happens to her, or she is told she has to do something. Overall, the writing was okay, but could have been better, with additional character development, and more choices from the protagonist that pushes the story forward that isn't along the lines of "I have no choice". The combat could have been streamlined, with the under utilized tools either removed, or re-balanced. Additional options and puzzles, clever, thought out ways to avoid/end combat and solve problems wouldn't have gone amiss, especially for a Tomb Raider game. And mechanics that make a lot of sense for these games (like having the player hunt for food) kept throughout the story. Even if additional survival mechanics were required as part of the story, as long as it makes sense, and helps provide more depth, than go for it. Otherwise, don't introduce mechanics you'll never use again.

You just said exactly what I thought: what arc? She went from poor innocent Lara Croft who doesn't want to hurt people into Rambo 2.0 who could kill ancient Samurai like a champ. While we are on that note: an island filled with hardcore survivors who are better outfitted, better trained more or less, and who have been dealing with these Oni for the better half of what, 10+ years, couldn't kill them but Lara could slaughter them like the survivors in L4D could zombies? Crap is what I call that. The whole first half of the game with the Solarii built up better (with all the mystic mumbo jumbo too) and actually made sense. The second half just didn't. Plus it doesn't help that they spitfire these Stormguard at you like zerglings against a wall of siege tanks. AND THEN the Solarii just randomly climb up the side of the mountain. What? Were you lazy bastards just hanging there the whole time? Your hundreds of fellow fighters could have used you when a Fem-Rambo was slaughtering them. They really needed your high ranking assistance you lazy bastards.

*She went from poor innocent Lara Croft who doesn't want to* [...] I have to disagree. She was Rambo 2.0 from the beginning. We as a players, a.k.a. sociopaths with pretty decent murdering skills, got our weapons very early in storyline and They didn't create any system that makes Lara shoots poorly for those first stages of storyline. With small help of these skills I mentioned before Lara became murdering machine at the moment She laid her hands on random dusty weapon on that party island.

+The36th A very good eye. The only real explanation I could dig up for that is the fact she and...the Irish/Scottish badass who was doing Reyes went on adventures. They say he taught her things for surviving like hunting, camping, etc. Not very solid when she still is given no limits but story and gameplay constraints at the time though and you can stick an arrow through a deers eye socket with pinpoint accuracy. I think the only explanation for that is she was on the archery team. Still not a good one. I could be a trapshooting pro but that doesn't mean I can have a gunfight with experienced survivalists and live to tell the tale lol. You sir brought up a very good point that shows another huge flaw in this game (and it actually helped me expand upon it too!). Look at us go! Now we need a think tank to put the screws to the Last of Us. I may be the only one who wants that though.

As for the Last of Us: my issues with RWBY (whole other topic), Tomb Raider, and The Force Awakens are all the same with my issues for that game. I will say this though: play it if you can, the unnecessary PS4 if you have one due to the fact it has more content (if you can find it cheaper) then decide if it's worth your time. I won't tell you anything other than it completely pissed me off that people said it was flawless because it isn't. I can handle people having an opinion, I can't however handle illogical nonsense. But play it however you can in order to make a true decision. It might surprise you. But then again, it didn't do squat for me and it's the exact thing I like: a zombie apocalypse game.

When I first played this game I too missed the Q.T.E. for the assault scene and was like "Well crap, I missed the first one, but he's going to be getting more involved and maybe I'll get a chance to break his nose or knee him in the nuts to get away." and instead he just murders Lara. Like... okay? Pretty sure their orders were to take her alive. I also enjoyed how the game was based around stealth since it doesn't make sense for one person to plow their way through dozens of armed people trying to get you... and then the game throws the stealth out of the window, which disappointed me. All that said, definitely the best of the three recent games overall.

Lewtable I definitely know what they were going for, they wanted a game that realistic and show Lara as being a vulnerable human. But that's not working for Tomb Raider, the Tomb Raider games were so fun *because* they weren't gritty and realistic. Old Lara was a clever bad-ass in those games.

Lewtable i agree with you, but the game wasn't bad, not out standing good either. just slightly above average. Chelsie Owens I'm playing it right now because it was free on Xbox last month. It's a shit game. There really is no central mechanic there. It's just "press this button to do this one time." I can't play it for more than 5 minutes at a time because it's just all the boring parts of Assassin's Creed. So far it's running along a preset path while the thing you're jumping on occasionally falls. I keep remembering I have fun games or more interesting things to do and just start doing that instead. Like at one point, either Lara or someone on the radio says she "can't just wait around here" after a 10 minute cutscene. Well that was exactly what I did because I stopped paying attention during the cutscene to browse tumblr. The cutscene ended and Lara had been standing there for 15 minutes before I remembered I was playing a game. Absolutely uninteresting and a perfect example of how AAA action games are wasting massive budgets failing to entertain.

Cool atmosphere, large exploration areas and fun 3D platforming. You felt like a tomb raider, figuring out puzzles, surviving natural disasters, and dying a shit ton doing it. Hell it didn't even warn you when a big ass bear tried to eat you, you're only warning was a growl. You know like real life? I went into this Tomb Raider thinking I was getting what the title promised. I got a Third Person Call of Duty with quick time events. Oh and some exploration on the side when the plot wasn't anywhere nearby (these were the best parts). And honestly the story was painfully predictable. For me, please note, for me.

I think the deer-killing thing was to show how Lara went from killing animals to people. She actually APOLOGIZES to the deer when she kills it, but then gets over it and starts killing wolves, etc. She has a traumatic experience killing her first man, but then gets over it, just like the animals. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

This comment isn't about the video, the game being reviewed, or something relevant. Instead, I'd really like to mention the ad that played right before this: A black basketball player (which may seem completely redundant, but bear with me) is advertising chocolate flavored, Flinstone's-inspired breakfast cereal, Coco Pebbles. At the very end of the ad, John Cena, a white professional wrestler and actor, shows up to represent "Team Fruity" (Fruity Pebbles being the counterpart Flinstone's cereal). The very last point of the ad has John Cena in the corner of the screen, decked out in rainbow accessories, shouting "Team Fruity!" and waving his hand around his face. Enjoy this Zero Punctuation video. Yahtzee makes a lot of jokes.

It makes me think of Buddy from LISA: The Painful. You intrinsically want to protect her from the horrible world that she's thrown into, but it's made clear throughout the game that she's actually way more capable than you give her credit for, and all of your attempts to protect her either make the situation even worse or goes against her own wishes. It was to show how that feeling of protectiveness didn't stem from love of wanting the best for someone, but rather from selfishness, and that selfishness ends up overshadowing what Buddy actually wants.
@robertashford197
@robertashford197 9 лет назад
Agreed. Whilst I'm very much down with; "Characters need to get the shit beat out of them at some point in these situations" it got to the point where Lara couldn't walk ten feet without "Oh fuck! A massive 30 foot deep hole just appeared in front of me! I've fallen down it but don't worry, miraculously I didn't break any bones and I'm still combat ready and able to communicate this to you perfectly!" 10 feet later..."Oh fu..!" It was like the developers really wanted to shove the game's theme of; YOUR CHARACTER MUST SUFFER BECAUSE THIS IS THE MAKING OF HER in your face constantly, but for me it just got to the point where it was unrealistic, I know all games do that (actually, I know Marcus Fenix on a personal basis and saw him shrug off getting shot in the face to be fair) but at least they don't make it a glaringly obvious by making it a theme as much as this game. I'm sure there are quite a few exceptions to that but that's the feeling I got from Tomb Raider. I sure as hell kept playing for the amazing scenery and slick mechanics though.

To some, yes, but to others (myself included) its more than that. They're a medium for conveying a potentially rich story. That particular moment in The Line is one of those great bits Yhatzee is always banging on about; a point of development in a character arc. Some of us feel a deeper connection to the characters we're meant to be portraying and their actions can and will evoke emotional responses, just like songs or books do for a lot of people.

I don't know. I think the fact that she had no choices and was subjected to the things she had to endure it was the whole catalyst for her transformation and the whole point to the story. That was the most pretentious comment I've ever read "can we really know who we are?" I mean come on mate this game is not well written its badly written. The story is like an episode of scooby doo in how ridiculous it is, the character arcs are so inconsistent and the game has no hidden themes in the background there's no subplot it's not as smart as bioshock or spec ops. Not only that, I don't really like superpowered heroes too much, that's why I prefer Batman and Green Arrow. +Dan Author Maybe that was the point? It makes for bad gameplay, but interesting commentary that the only thing that was really scary about them was their appearance and presentation. As soon as someone starts taking shots at them, they crumble, just like Himiko's whole plot (when the princess committed suicide). All it took was someone telling the emperor he had no clothes to make his impotent wrath irrelevant. I thought the game was alright. I could have done with, as the review said, more exploring and platforming and less "jump from behind cover, gun some dudes down, get back behind cover" gameplay. And I certainly could have done with less annoying characterization. I didn't want to rescue Sam in the end, and I had started hoping that Reyes or Alex would have had more screen-time.

Anyone else remember that time the very first game had you shotgunning the legs off a motherfucking T-Rex as the very first boss fight? Now that its been a few years since any of you have actually played the game, recall for me, a single moment of this game that was fun AND memorable.... I'm genuinely asking because the only parts of this game I can remember was a bit of dialogue here and there, but no moments of actual gameplay that I can recall aside from like... The first and as far as I REMEMBER (and I could be wrong, its been like 2 years) only time Lara went completely apeshit on the tribals that was appropriately reflected in gameplay. But yeah, i'm not even trying to be a dick I am genuinely trying to recall any moments of this game that stuck with me as memorable AND fun at the same time. I agree wholeheartedly- which is why I got really excited for Bioshock Infinite when they introduced the new 1999 mode. They realized how casual their game(s) was/were/are and fixed that issue.

Maybe im just a simply guy, who dosent really give a rats ass about how she got her abilities, or if her father was actually Nathen Drake. I really enjoyed the character development, and I almost bonded with the character over it. It will never carry the same weight again, because through the story you find yourself purposely failing qte so you can see the brutal ways the island likes to say "I dont like you."

He lives in a comfortable house, is typing on a marvel of engineering called a computer and is using one of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of communication, the internet. Not a single other animal on this planet has access to these (except when helped by us ofc.). I think just those three already count as some of our collective achievements, not even mentioning Alfonso's own achievements. It's not because you think you're nothing special, that you should project that on others.

Played it on PC and then remastered for Xbox One. I don't know how you can't like this game.. a great third person shooter imo better than any of the uncharted games. It's almost perfect. It was almost just as great the second time around.

Yahtzee didn't like it because Yahtzee wants a game where ALL of the protagonist's actions are driven by the player. Games like Half-Life where "cutscenes" at least let you look around the room, and to a lesser extent Fable 3 where the moment-to-moment resource management has implications on the moral choice system which in turn has impact on the gameplay

***** The problem is that the other 95% is menu hopping and simply walking around. Everything that actually advances the game is buggy, broken QTE.

I loved the game, too, but I agree with Yahtzee on basically all counts. So often I was thinking "Jesus Christ. Aren't they gonna give this woman a break? She's just spent the last half hour falling down holes, caught in a currents, clinging to rock faces for dear life, getting the shit kicked out of her and being shot at and set on fire, constantly, without a break. AND WHY HASN'T SHE STOLEN A COAT, YET?" There were also a lot of cinematics, particularly the opening one, where I was left wondering why I'm not the one controlling her. Like the boat crash would have been so much more awesome if I'd just been in control of her. As it was, it was a cinematic. And the two Scottish characters felt so very contrived, while Lara's voice actor was...really not good enough. As for that 'Arc'...yeah, I found the disconnect between freaking out over her first kill and being constantly rewarded for headshots and "finishes" a bit annoying, as well as the being encouraged to straight up murder people who MIGHT want to kill me. She becomes more jaded as the game progresses, sure, but most of the character development is just a clever use of the introduction of game mechanics masquerading as such. Was a fun game, though. Gorgeous, too. But way too many shootouts, not enough stealth and platforming, and not enough rewards/context for the collectibles. Still, £3.99 well spent.

Indiana Jones comes out. Its great homage to stupid B adventure movies in the 30s with a bugger budget and production value. Then Tomb Raider comes out and its Indiana Jones with tits. Then Uncharted comes out and its Dude Raider, which is just Indiana Jones only less exciting. Tomb Raider is rebooted as a safe Uncharted knock off with mechanics cherry picked from every other action game in the last decade. This is a serious, Nolanization of a video game that has a woman running around with short shorts in the mountains. Im not opposed to different directions but it fails at what it is trying to do story wise. The immersion is constantly broken every time i see her jump like an olympion after being impaled by a spike early on, or when she tries to close her wound because she presumably saw Rambo III. Just because someone is going through touch times and pain doesnt mean i should care. Just because Laura Croft is figuring out all the voodoo mumbo jumbo that is interchangeable with all the Uncharted games doesnt make me invested. I laughed at the very end when you use two pistols to destroy the final boss, as the game is telling the player, oh so brilliantly, that Laura Croft finally becomes who she is because she killed a guy with two guns laying around. Obviously this arc is something that required 9 hours of gameplay to fully flesh out. Its a story that doesnt need to be told. Usually reboots are done to reintroduce something old to a younger audience. Everyone, including their grandma knows what Tomb Raider is (indiana jones with tits as i said earlier) so why reboot it? Why not just skip what no one wanted to know in the first place and just have fun with it? Is fun not allowed? Does everything need to be grim and serious because the kids dont like anything else? It would have been most wise if they went the campy route that the original games have but i guess we cant have that anymore because Dark Knight and a bunch of other things that have come out fairly recently made that not cool.

I must have had some kind of point two days ago but I seem to have forgotten it. How about this: Yahtzee said Lara is often given no other option but to proceed, clearly referring to gameplay. Wasn't Walker also given no other option but to proceed? They couldn't just turn back and leave and engaging the ~30 guys and 5 jeeps head-on would have been suicide. I think my point might be that Walker's decision was inevitable due to the linear gameplay path before him.

The game explains how Lara knows how to jump and climb and shoot, the game brings up quite a few times that Roth, an adventurer, is a friend of the Croft family and took Lara on several of his expeditions with him after her Father died. Other than that, like most of his reviews, I'd be lying if I said his complaints aren't legitimate.

After having played this game i totally agree with yahtzee, there is no challenge in this game, the map simply shows all the locations of the collectibles and lara's tomb raider vision spells every platforming puzzle out for you. I really expected more of this.

I agree with everything you said, especially the character arc thing. She just has one freakout when she first uses a gun, says ''Get away from me!'' to the other 2 goons in her immediate vicinity, kills them and then carnage ensues for the rest of the game gung-ho style. And it's really annoying!

I liked this game, but there were SO MANY quick time events and cutscenes that I never really felt in control of Lara. It felt like a film that I occasionally had to press buttons to continue watching. The optional tombs were my favourite part, because they brought back the platforming and physics-based puzzles of the original games, but there were only about 3 of them in the whole game, and compared to them the other collectibles were just a chore.
