The 101st anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier occurs on November 11, 2022. That day is typically known as Veterans Day. The name was originally, "Armistice Day," changed in 1954.
Every American knows of the Tomb. Not a single person knows his name. He fell in WWI, but is not the only "unknown" from that war, indeed not the only such fallen soldier resting in Arlington National Cemetery.
The Tomb of the Civil War Unknowns is there, too. It marks a crypt with 2,111 unknows from that bloody war -- both Union and Confederate.
The American Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is in stark contrast to other memorials. Those in Belgium are massive and somber, one contains over 72,000 names inscribed on its walls. America chose to honor one man with a single block of marble.
World War One's hero rests in Honor with two other unknows -- from both the Second World War and from Korea. That select group had, for a while, a fourth member -- from the Vietnam War. Thankfully, his remains were identified, and the fourth grave lies empty.
Over one million men and women died fighting for freedom. Remember them in your prayers. Pass on the tradition of service. Share how special our nation is. God Bless America.
