TOMMY CARRUTHERS CHANGING JKD SCENE - Bruce Lee's Martial Art 

Tommy is great, but to say he is the most influential person in JKD after Bruce simply isn't true.

​ Tommy Carruthers was NOT the only one doing it publicly ( But he was certainly one of a very few people that did it early on when youtube started). That is a incorrect statement. Sifu Stefan did it also at the same time tommy did (on video). Ted taught those things at seminars when he was here. But like I said, the reason for it was because of who was attending the seminars. If he felt that there would be anyone there that he did not want to teach those things too. The he did not do it. My first seminar with him, was very broad and basic, but the next ones where very much in depths and there was not just "jkd kickboxing". But I do know that at other seminars that was all he was teaching because he was not comfortable with teaching stuff that really could injure people if taught to the wrong persons. So the statement is correct, but also very much incorrect and completely taken out of context. You say that you talk about truths and facts... where you there when he (Ted Wong) said What he said? Did you ever meet him? Did you ever have a private conversation with him? Or do you only go by what your instructor Tommy has told you and or maybe of what someone on the internet has wrote on facebook and took that as the truth without any further confirmations from others who was there? It is very obvious to us that you havent done your research properly and that is why me and several others are exposing this garbage statements you are making as incorrect, halftruths and some as even straight up lies. Just admit that you don´t have all the facts and correct information. But as Koos said, Tommy was ONE OF THE FIRST ONES, to openly teach these things, but he was not the only one. Before I came across Tommy. I saw nobody on RU-vid that remotely looked like Bruce: everything I saw was essentially wing chun, trapping, kali, grappling etc. it was not until I saw Tommy that I saw anything like what Bruce was doing. I’ve certainly never seen anyone else movie like Bruce except for Tommy. Obviously Ted spent more time with Bruce than anyone, and had more private lessons than anyone from what I underhand, but I can honestly say I’ve never never seen any emphasis on eye strikes, groin kicks, kicks to the knee etc online until I saw Tommy. Obviously I don’t personally know what Ted taught when he did seminars but the fact of the matter is that out in the open, like RU-vid. Nobody was showing the stuff I just mentioned, nobody was doing anything that looked even close to what Bruce spoke about or emphasised, so I don’t think what Thomas has said in this video is necessarily wrong. There are many people who have no idea what Bruce did or emphasised. Most people as I’m sure you are aware think JKD is a mixed martial art that consists of martial arts Bruce Lee never even trained.

​@@Wolfgath so if you deal with facts, then please explain to me, how Thomas Marx can make inaccurate speech about several JKD instructors and showing "proof" of video material that is taken out of context as proof that he know what he is talking about? For instance he put in a super short video of Sifu Stefan Nikander and Sigung Ted Wong showing a padwork drill during a seminar, the same exact seminar that I myself was an attendee at ( one of several I must add). I KNOW what was being taught in that video sequence, I was there. I was Sifu Stefan Nikanders protege and are still to this day practicing JKD as it was taught to me. From day way we practiced kicking the knee, fingerjab to the face, groin kicks.. Hell we actually sparred full contact with gear and we were allowed to kick eachother in the groin and doing stop kicks to the knee etc. I was there and I can prove it all. STell me, where are the facts? Because all i see is a person who try to uplift someone by putting down others and sadly and wrongly spreading a "truth" that is not accurate. I can give credit when credit is due, and Tommie Carruthers do deserve credit for a lot of things he has done for the community, but he was NOT the only one who was talking about the "dirty fighting" stuff. That is just pure BS and very inaccurate information to spread. The truth is actually this... He (Tommy Carruthers) and about a handful of other people was the ones talking about the stuff Thomas mentions in this video, when I started out back in 1998. Sifu Stefan and Sigung Ted have passed away, but their knowledge continues on thru other from the 2and and third generation instructors like myself. Like I said, I was there, I know sigung Ted talked about self defense and kicking to the groin, eye jabs etc. So all that talk about him teaching for sport is just bs.. I know the story behind that, I was not there when he said it, but I know the truth of where thay came from and why it was said and I can happily share that part if youd like. Which makes me wonder why the hell does Thomas feel like he has to put people down to make himself have more credit. I think a lot of what thomas is saying makes sense, and is very much accurate ( about self defense and JKD). But when he is saying stuff that just is not true, speaking from someone who was there. The I have to do what I hate to do.. Put someone in their place. Which I certainly will because I can prove it. So tell me, where are the facts you speak of? Where are Thomas facts that is NOT taken out of context? So far, there havent been shown any of sorts. If by chance you Thomas reads this.. keep working as you do. I agree with a lot of stuff and I do think in general that what you do and say, are very accurate. But this time you slipped up when you started showing and talking about instructors that is not here to defend themselves. So therefor I will step up and say, you are wrong and I hope you do a video explaining yourself. Because it is not right to say stuff that is not true, that was taken out of context, to use as a material (proof) to show that you speak the truth. It´s just wrong.. You are better than this. You could have done the same video without talking down other instructors as well as TW, that even Tommie was a student under. Its just bad behaviour and doesnt do a good job representing the art we both care so much for.

​​​​​​@@JKD_RickardAnkarsund_Phoenixere is a fact: Ted Wong was asked on two different seminars of his (one of those he did together with Jesse Glover) that, if what he was teaching was sport or street fighting. He said both times it was for sport fighting. I don't know what Nikander did off camera, but for what you can see on videos was most part Ted Wong kickboxing and than even some sport grappling. Nothing like Tommy promotes. Of course, there were here and there peoole doing some finger jabs, but mostly after unrealistic compound trapping sequence, or as distraction, not as an actual attack, which is funny, its like using a rifle as distraction, to than switch to a stick, like someone who doesn't understand how a rifle works.

The point that is missing here here is that there are two sides to the coin. He taught with different focus on different seminars. Mostly depending on the people that where attending. Not once under the several seminars that I attended when TW was here in sweden did he talk about sport fighting when he was teaching. And the video you put up is taken out of context. I can gladly explain it for you. Since you say you dont know what he did off camera. Well even on camera you dont know what is shown, only what it looks like. But I will gladly explain it to you. Like I said.. I was there.. Ive had personal private talks with TW. Im curious. Have you attended a TW seminar by the way? I mean since Tommy is your teacher and at one point he was a student under TW, or was that before you started training JKD? You haven't seen a video, but he said it on two seminars in front of crowd, at one of those Jesse Glover was co conductor of the same seminar with Ted together. Ted was asked the question, by one ofe of the participants, if what he was teaching was more sport or street fighting. He replied, it's more for sport. What I hear from people who trained with him is he never mentioned anything about sport and theres videos of him striking the groin and eyes and knees. Hearing he taught kick boxing is absurd to me since just about everything you teach is what I have learned from people who come from his school. Anyways keep up the good work.

The reason why Bruce had the edge over everyone was because of his attributes, his movement etc. what he was doing was unorthodox. Why do what everyone else is doing when you can have the edge over them.

@axelstone3131 you mean he's not a robot who tries to copy the fighting style of a 5'7", 135 lb man, who's been dead for 50yrs? Vunak very much uses the concept of interception, with the jeet-tek and eye jab being two of his main weapons. As far as the Progressive Weapons Chart goes, you can flush that down the toilet. Situation dictates the best weapon used, not a meaningless chart.

Fencing footwork was utilised because it’s the fastest way in an out, the power side forward is used because you don’t need the extra power for your lead hand. Unbelievable. You don’t get it at all. The structure makes it work. That what JKD is. Everyone about the footwork, stance, body mechanics is the whole damn reason the system is soo effective but you don’t even understand that. There is barely true jkd taught, and if its taught there is no money behind it, people who train it are mostly middle aged 9 to 5 working people. And it's for street application.

If I'm interested in what Bruce was teaching and developing, I'm looking for that. I couldn't give any shit what a person A or B claims to has to be changed, because I'm not looking for theirs opinion, but that of Bruce.
