Serious interviews with Tommy are a rare thing. They are usually with him in full blown Tommy Cooper mode. Priceless, because he was gone within a year of this interview
This was one year before he died of a heart attack...just guessing after seeing some of his other interviews, he probably didn't feel much like cutting up.
Surely this interview wasn't just 3.57 secs, Tommy was a genuine, sober entertainer and we deserved at least 30 mins of serious talk, RIP Tommy, you are not forgotten!!
James Bowie ....Yes in the 70's he became a heavy smoker and chronic drinker, but never appeared intoxicated on his shows, but in the end the TVs channels wouldn't have him on. His theatre shows were a hit though.
THE most serious i have ever seen him in an interview..even 'Parkinson' never got this close...nice man was Tommy..very funny..and says it like it is..sadly missed..still watch his shows from time to time..his mastery of 'play on words; was insurpasable and sheer genious!..loved it when he was in a restaurant and said to the waiter 'Do you serve lobsters?' and the waiter says 'yes sir' and then Tommy puts the lobster on the table next to him...priceless! there's no one like him and there never will be..RIP Tommy Cooper x
I can remember so well the day he died i was watching the Begining of "Live from Her Majesty's" on the 15th April 1984 but then i'd gone out to play football with some friends and came home to be told by my mum that he had Collapsed on stage it was watching the News that night that i found out he had died...Tommy Cooper was a Genius and one joke he told always makes me laugh it's just a simple little gag a very silly gag but still makes me chuckle "Sorry i've something in my eye... Oh it's My Finger" still makes me laugh
@@jahno7154Agreed. Whilst he was indeed a true comedy genius, he had his Demons. Really sad how he went but Tommy would have loved the fact that he literally left them all laughing. He's paid his dues in the end. God rest him
My hero I grew up with him Tommy your my hero remember the day he died I was seven years old in 1984 I'm now 39 a lot of today's comics could learn from Tommy rip ur legend is still with us all
Tommy Cooper was a class act with ethical standards. I don't think there will ever be anyone as good as Mr Cooper as it would take centuries for some one of his elk.
My old man was a grumpy bastard. He couldn’t stand the great Morecambe and wise,or most of the outstanding acts of the sixties and seventies, but Tommy cooper would have tears of laughter running down the old bastard’s eyes. I miss them both.
I was 7 years old when he passed away.. So sad, he died on stage doing something he loved. He is not the only famous actor to have done that, Sid James also passed away on stage. One of the best
This is amazing given the fact that Tommy was prepared and allowing to do a serious interview. He rarely turned a question into a comedy bit like he did in all the other interviews. So I'm very envious of the man who is interviewing Tommy. Surely there is more than these 3 minutes???
I really didn't want this to stop it was so nice seeing him being serious, even tho we loved him being daft it was brill to see him not acting about, very eerie when the interviewer asks if he's ever died on stage and he said yes.
Well done Channel TV for their archive there is some brilliant footage of interviews with actors and comedy greats. Tommy was very relaxed this was helped by a good interviewer who asked sensible questions.
Tommy died on stage but he spent his whole like killing audiences with his superb humour , he never ever resorted to blue jokes or expletives , he was the most wonderful comedian who ever lived and he was unique in all respects. What a gent and still so badly missed . We shall not see his like again
Never heard him curse?? Did you ever talk to him in real life? He was worse than Hughie Green. I have never heard language like it. I was shocked. Some women walked out, they couldn't stand it. I am serious, he could have been arrested for language like that.
oh blimey... what a lovely little clip. the most serious i've ever seen him and that's so welcome. and the little bit where he say's "Well you said it!" and the look after - wow - something of the sharp mind he kept so well hidden. brilliant, brilliant, brilliant - thanks for the upload!
Yes, I didn't like the way the interviewer implied he used blue humour. He didn't, not in my experience.Kudos to Tommy for turning the question back at him. RIP, you lovely man.
Great memories of Tommy from childhood, he could always make people laugh. And as he says, with clean jokes and inoffensive comedy. Tommy was rarely this candid but you have to wonder what he thought of this interviewer's daft questions.
Interesting how they ask Tommy if he ever died a death on stage and he actually did the following year. It's nice to see him being serious with the interviewer on this one and not clowning around too much with the questions.
@crazyclive As others have said, it was prob exaggerated. Typical media. Also, his wife was no angel either! She liked the odd bottle and a good fight by all accounts.
A rock band I know met Tommy in a hotel bar and invited him to their table. He sat with them for a while then said, "oh dear, I left my change on the bar, I better go and get it. It's only a shilling but you know - it's not the principle, it's the money!"
Unlike a lot of comedians these days which are LAZY when they rely on profanity, sexual jokes, or gross-out humor to be funny.... you don't have to do that! Comedy is all about timing! Look to Tommy Cooper ~ You can be creative & colorful! It's not hard!
At 2:06, the interviewer asks, 'have you ever died a death on stage?' It could only have been days or a few weeks later he literally died on stage - April 15, 1983. RIP Tommy, you were just wonderful...
Wow!!!! Not suggesting Parkys interview wasn't great but this just adds to my admiration for Tommy. How untimely a death and for him, how else would he have wanted it. On stage, making people happy.
Tommy could be quite eccentric - For example, when he was staying in a hotel, rather eating in the restaurant, he brought a camp stove with him and cooked his own meal in his room !
Tommy was so right, at the closing question, that the audience knows if the performer has a cockey attitude. Nothing kills a performer's streetcred, or the affection an audience might previously have felt for a performer than ddiscovering they have acquired a cocky attitude. It is even recognisable in videos made years ago! Tommy Cooper didnt suffer from a cockey attitude any more than his act sometimes contained inuendo or smut. Stupid interviewer, it was his own dirty mind! Tommy Cooper was a straight down the line 'clean humour' comedian and you knew without a doubt you could relax and enjoy his show. He was the ultimate in witty and humour because of it. Akin to bad Dad-jokes, his humour and actions just evoked spontaneous laughter like that of a young child - joyful and fun, pure magic. Comedians who use foul language as the driving force of their act really are not comedians at all. like singers who have to have hitech editing to make their songs listenable when their singing is very weak they are not, therefore, singers with a natural lovely voice! Tommy Cooper was authentic in every cell of his body. I think his almost exaggerated humility hid a very sad man. What a pity he couldnt believe that his audience loved him and wanted him to feel as happy at all times as he made them.
Have just read MANY, MANY, MANY favourable comments here. Tommy Cooper has to be (even today) a World Class performer. Never fails to make me laugh! I particularly enjoyed this interview because I'm from Jersey. He was always welcome on this island. If I remember correctly, he used to enjoy a libation or two in the "Seaforth" before his gig at "Fort Regent" or the "pavilion" at West Park. He will be missed by many. Can't say any more than the accolades below.
It has been great to live in the same time as Tommy, the Beatles, Abba. Billy Connolly, Robin Williams and now Jacob Collier and funny men like Bill Burr etc. Its all changing for the worse now. Such a shame.
Great to see Tommy being serious like that, just like that in fact, not like this, or any other other way for that matter, but just like that .. ha hah ha .. you like that one do yer ha ha ha ..
Me too Bob. Wonderful Wonderful,Very Very Funny Man, who is sadly missed!!! He made us laugh, and will still have everyone rolling around up there! Put it this way...Our loss is heaven's gain.💔
