Recently heard this again and put car windows down and turned radio up...it was later that I discovered what Tommy James said about its meaning...the. Life-giving blood of Jesus Christ and being born again. amen. Never knew that before
I have always loved their music!! I have to say...(even though I'm older) he still has "bedroom eyes". U guys are still looking good and ya all still have amazing lyrics! Xx jillian
Lucky you. Back in 1969 I was 14 yrs old & my cute girlfriend too. We loved Tommy's music. She would always tilt her head and give me the cutest grin. Years later I saw her asked if she remembered Tommy's music? She said "Yes" and gave me that same cute smile and tilted her head as if we were 14 yrs old again.
@@jillygirl1292 a little clean story about being 14 yrs back in 1969. When a lot of Tommy's music played I was so in love with a very cute 14 yr old girl. We would sing to each other all the time and she would always give me the cutest grin and tilted her head. Years later I saw her and asked her if she remembered songs like this? She said "Yes" and gave me that same cute grin and tilted her head as if we were 14 yrs old again, she had not forgotten. Also we experienced our very 1st REAL kiss with each other at 14.
Susan I'm so jealous!!! I would love to see him in concert. I'm 60 y/o and still love going to concerts! Covid19 has messed that all up now. The things I take for granted.
willieboy3011 they got screwed, so many covers of their work and people think the covers are the original. mony, mony; I think we're alone now; crimson and clover off the top of my head.
He sounds the same!! Thanks Tommy & Shondels for making being a teenager of the ‘60s the best time and music!! I have this on my phone and listen all the time!!
My next door neighbor was a beautiful young woman, as close as family. Her fiance was coming home to marry her, he was a helicopter pilot in Nam, did three tours, as a rescue unit, to save lives of downed pilots. He had done his duty, and time, and was awaiting transport back to the states, and marriage, we were all excited for their family. The day came, he loaded out on a C-130 transport and headed home, about ten minutes after takeoff they were struck by a surface-to-air missile, "all" souls on board were lost. He himself was a "RESCUE PILOT", in harms way on every mission, and that never stopped him from fulfilling his duties, and saving lives. When I first heard these lines, I almost fell down crying, and I'm a strong man, ya know: Oh, yeah, yesterday my friends were marching out to war Oh, yeah, listen, now, we ain't a-marching anymore No, we ain't gonna fight Only God has the right To decide who's to live and die In my mind, this is one of the most perfect sets of lyrics, I have ever heard. Thank-You Tommy James, & Ritchie Grassosong for penning such a beautiful song, With Love & Peace, THANKS !!
@@pattyjoyce4461 Everytime I hear this song, I tear ah little and think, "the beauty of life, can only survive, if we love one another" This is one of the most beautifully written songs, I've ever heard. Happy Thanksgiving Patty !!!
Absolutely one of the best bands I have seen! I remember seeing Tommy James for the first time at breakfast in Atlantic City when they were playing Steel Pier. An incredible head of hair.
"To save us he gave us Sweet Cherry Wine" The blood of Jesus can save, deliver & set you free. " Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good". Loved this song back in the day, had no concept of it's true meaning until becoming a Christian many yrs. later. Listen to it often..God Bless you Tommy.
I was working for my older sister, doing yard work on her ranch in the summer of 1969 in northern Ca. She had a couple of Tommy James and the Shondells 4 track tapes(before 8 track) I wore them out that summer. These songs just bring back a really great summer in my life. Thanks for the found memories.
When the lyrics go "Yesterday my friends were marchin out to war" genuinely brought chills to me and transported me back for a second to 69.....I just remember the mood and atmosphere brought about by the war....anxious, but wonderful time.
As this came up on my RU-vid channel tonight…I listened 🎧 and just started crying, As a young girl I sat glued to the television December1969 marked the start and March 1973 Vietnam War ended with the troop withdrawal, civilians on the runway hoping to be airlifted out with the Americans they helped! ✈️✈️✈️✈️ Fast forward August 2021 (~50 years later) News from Afghanistan … troop withdrawal, civilians running after planes hoping to be airlifted out with Americans since they helped and will be persecuted by Taliban…🛫🛫🛫🛫 It’s heartbreaking 💔 again as we devastated another country in the name of protecting the world … “Those who do not learn from their past are destine to repeat it”
"Sweet Cherry Wine" is a song by Tommy James and the Shondells from their 1969 album, Cellophane Symphony. It hit number seven on the Billboard Hot 100[1] and rose to number six on the Canadian charts. This psychedelic song was released at the height of psychedelia, right after one previous 'mind expanding' song by Tommy James and the Shondells, "Crimson and Clover", and before "Crystal Blue Persuasion"
My favorite Tommy James song, and it is done with perfection here from year 2000. Tommy's voice is as wonderful as ever - and I really got hand it to him, he got band members who are incredible harmonizers. Just listen to those backing vocals - they sound like they were recorded in a studio - but, according to one of the video's producers who commented on Amazon, everything is completely live. Great job, Tommy - and kudos to jwhineryjr for posting this - I may buy my own copy of the DVD!
I kept listening for the Leslie effect vocal parts but Lord this sounds great. TJ is such an underrated rock legend. Great voice, great songs. This is what it was like kids
Betty Im sure you grew up with Tommy and his music, me too. Here's a cute clean story of two 14 yr old teenager's in love. My girlfriend and I would sing to each other ALL the time. She would always tilt her head and give me the cutest grin. Years later I saw her and asked her if she remembered Tommy's music? She said, "Yes" and gave me that same cute grin and tilted her head, as if we were 14 yrs old again. We also talked and shared that at 14 yrs old we experienced our 1st REAL kiss. Love to be 14 again. Stay safe during this crazy COVID19 virus.
I was so fortunate as a kid to hear Tommy's hits played on the radio for the 1st time. There were so many great artists but if I had to pick just ONE individual who was best at spinning a melody, it has to be him. Who else can compose a rock song in 3/4 time and make it sound like you died and went to heaven? Thanks, Tommy!
Well I love all the old music and Tommy James and the Shondells are right on top period. They had some of the greatest music I thought back then and I still have their Anthology on a thumb drive I use in my truck. I like all those old songs that had some great message I guess. Nobody wants to March out the war anymore and that was a powerful statement. Just kind of makes me think of an old Mac Davis song Back at about that time and it was "I believe in music". And that song makes a powerful statement also and it is a great tune. Gallery later did the song back in 72 I think and I don't know I may have like their version even better. But hey it don't matter who came first it is still a great song period.
On this day in 1969 {March 16th} "Sweet Cherry Wine" by Tommy James and the Shondells entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #86; seven weeks later on May 4th, 1969 it peaked at #7 {for 2 weeks} and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100... Between 1966 and 1970 the group had nineteen Top 100 records; seven made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, "Hanky Panky" for 2 weeks in 1966 and "Crimson and Clover" for 2 weeks in 1969... They just missed having a third #1 record when "Crystal Blue Persuasion" peaked at #2* {for 3 weeks} in 1969... Tommy James, as a solo artist, had thirteen Top 100 records; with one reaching the Top 10, "Draggin' the Line" at #4 in 1971 {it reached #2 in Canada}... Mr. James, born Thomas Gregory Jackson, will celebrate his 68th birthday next month on April 29th {2015}... * The three weeks that "Crystal Blue Persuasion" was at #2, the #1 record for those three weeks was "In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)" by Zager and Evans...
this performance is so good its almost haunted. I saw one other show in that room, live, and it too was spiritual. there must be some heavy vibes in that club. i don't even know if its still there.

Seen Tommie in concert here in Minot ND at the Norsk Hostfest a few yrs back and he still brings it, never lost his vocal ability one bit and he still had several of his band members you see in this clip
Dearest Tommy, I wonder how many wonderful babies were born with you in mind 🤣😅. No honestly you and your team of musicians ROCK! Love your voice and all your songs as they take me back to the 60’s when I was younger dancing to them all. 🌻✌️
Tommy James and the Shondells were great playing at the CNE Bandshell on Saturday, September 3rd, 2011, in Toronto, Canada. Andy Kim opened for them also was great. It was fantastic!
