A lot of people don't like "grinders" and "compilers" for the Hall, but I never understood that. Longevity with the resulting numbers is just as important. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Mike, I was at the game that Tommy John got hurt in 1974. I am glad his bad day was WAYYY after his Dodger career! TJ seemed distracted after his first error. That second error was BRUTAL that led to the third error! ! hahaha That play sounded like a little league play. This is a great story. I have never heard it before. Thanks for sharing! I knew you'd play an Oasis song after all the big news the past week. Have a great rest of your weekend!
Oasis is back and the tour will be epic...and expensive. LOL I often wonder how much better the Dodger would have done in the 74 series with a healthy Tommy John. He was having a great year when he got hurt...something like 12-3 with a sub 3 era.
Fantastic Tommy John story. I hope he day he gets recognized by the HOF before he leaves us. I have him as my next Autograph highlight! Enjoyed Mike. Busy past few weeks. Getting caught up on YT slowly
Hahahaha! Well…. It was three errors in 12 seconds but it was an an anomaly and he still got the win! Tommy John was an excellent pitcher and anyone that has a surgery named after them should be in the HOF! 😁 The autographed 84 Topps card is awesome and he actually has a very nice signature!
Hi Mike! I gave you “like” unlucky 13. Hopefully you or I don’t have a bad day. I really enjoyed this video. I never heard that story before. It turned out to be a good day in the end. Nothing like a happy ending unless you’re a Brewers fan or Yankee hater. Thanks for sharing.
We all have those days. Thankfully, we're not center stage when it happens. It's time Tommy gets his call to the Hall along with Dr Jobe who revolutionized the surgery.
It would have been no errors but Tommy just couldn't believe he saw a Don Mossi puppet in the stands. Glare is good my friend...it shows it's a video of and for the people. LOL
Is that a record (3 errors on one play by one player)? It seems impossible to achieve. Also, why in the world was the pitcher taking a cut? 😂 A friend of mine recently talked to me about TJ and how he's one of only a handful of guys with more than 280 wins and not in the HoF. Thanks for sharing!
For many years it was believed that Mike Grady held the record for 5 errors on a single play back in 1895. 100 years later it was debunked by baseball historians leaving Tommy John to hold the record all by himself. As for the cut, there's different rotation schemes for backing up a play depending on the situation, but for the most part TJ should have been backing up the catcher I believe. If you remember the famous Derek Jeter flip, the pitcher was backing up home, and Jeter ran from SS to pick off the offline throw because he had no other play at his position. It's funny how some of the greatest, or at least most interesting events in baseball often stem from players being out of position or odd decisions that were made. Have a great holiday weekend Gordon.
@@mikethesportshistorycollec1947 Mike, I am trying to find military service information on Gil McDougald. I see a reference that he served, but little information. Do you have a site that you use that might help me?
@@CleanCheapShots Not one set site. Baseball in wartime, SABR, Chevrons and Diamonds, and Wiki will usually have tid bits that can be sewn together, but even then there's sometimes (like with McDougald) that you're lucky if you can find if he even served. Some players just don't or didn't talk about it much, and if they didn't win any major medals, they are kind of forgotten...even though they were good soldiers.
