Whilst an amazing performance that could apply to any country it is actually about Russia, sung in English and at least a third written by an Englishman so not exclusive to Sweden - to be honest the suffering and pain linked to patriotism is probably more applicable to European nations in recent history who have suffered far more than often neutral Sweden e.g. Russia, Poland, Finland, Norway even the UK.
Not strange that no one can do this better when Bjorn and Benny wrote this with Tommy in their mind for Anatoly. You can say this song is made for Tommy Korberg and no one else.
This is a common misconception. The part (including Anthem) was NOT written specifically for Tommy Korberg. However, once he was onboard, there were creative collaborations between him and the composers.
Love it! But it’s his second best. The best performance ever of this masterpiece is at Cirkus, Stockholm, 1992. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aBjc7ojnAaU.html
I think I've watched about 20 videos of this song tonight to find the best. For so many reasons, this is the best. The singer who originated the song, about as close in time to the debut of the Chess concept album as we'll find on RU-vid, and you can watch Mr. Korberg not just sing the song, but act the part. He's young, his singing is powerful, and the lyrics are sung crisply and perfectly. This one is the keeper.
long wait for an answer :) Its no wonder that you think this is the best version. This song was tailor made for Tommy by two music geniuses. Taking Tommy´s strength´s in consideration and amplifying them into this song. Its not made to be duplicated by others.
What I love about this performance, above and beyond Tommy Körberg's incredible acting and singing, is its inherent simplicity. At awards shows, I'm more used to shows trotting out their "spectacle" number with all the bells and whistles, and there's *nothing* wrong with that, but this one man singing commands just as much attention and respect, if not more.
No. and his diverse performances, no one is ever the same, and different levels of the song, the way he puts the tone, no one knows what makes it so brilliant that Tommy does.
Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson did when they wrote the role for Tommy. Tommy Körberg has been a popular singer in Sweden since the 60s, attended the Eurovision Song Contest in the late 60s with the Swedish title 'Judy min vän'. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RRI5mzHoi5g.html
Tom , Mick and the Maniacs. Tommy Körberg är en av Sveriges bästa sångare. Hans arbete tillsammans med Benny Andersson och Björn Ulveus har gjort honom till den han är idag. Tack för all bra musik Tommy.
Tommy was singing this "Anthem" in Marsta Stockholm when i was a child, my father tells me after, he felt shivers in the neck, i think my mother did to.
LYRICS No man, no madness Though their sad power may prevail, Can posses, conquer my country's heart They rise to fail. She is eternal Long before nation's lines were drawn. When no flags flew, when no armies stood, My land was born. And you ask me why I love her Through wars, death and despair. She is the constant, We who don't care. And you wonder, will I leave her - but how? I cross over borders but I'm still there now How can I leave her? Where would I start? Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart. My land's only borders lie around my heart.
This performance is actually from the 1987 laurence olivier awards. Either way this is his personal best performance of anthem and the overall best performance of this song in my opinion, just incredible! I wish i could listen to it in better quality though. The only other performance of this song, by him, that is in the same league, is his 1989 skellefteå version, that sadly has been taken down. The choir sounds kinda of key in that version though. I may upload it

I found a version of Anthem live with Tommy on an old VHS tape of mine . search : Tommy Körberg performes "Anthem" early 90s tv broadcast and you will find it. :)
It is clear that Tommys version is not just the original but the ultimate version. Allso how is he not old Tommie B. Who was there before borders where drawn and love some one no matter what? It is the man with the yellow boots and hat!
you can enjoy new technical wonders. ! you might run around enjoy technical wonders. Now This is a masterpiece written by Benny, and lyrics i guess by the other guy!
@CodebladeWielder006 Yes it surprises me as well. Though I imagine either people get nitpicking with so many splendid versions to choose from, or they're so narrow minded that they only have room in their hearts for one kind of music and shouldn't a particular song resonate with them... well, there you have it.
It's an amazing performance and I hope we all feel that about our home countries! This song is of course about russia, Tommy is playing a russian chess player, but it is lovely to think about all our home countries like that. Rulers, wars and borders are unimportant - we love our homes as parts of our hearts.
+zigadena Gabardini I don't think anyone is foolish enough to mistake a musical for an opera. Except for maybe a few delusional ones that get confused by the name "Phantom of the "opera".
zigadena Gabardini Maybe I misunderstood. I just tried to explain the differences between musical and opera. Some people seem to mix them up. Maybe they were talking about Chess itself and not musical and opera in general as musical cathegories.
Truthfully, I have never heard a bad "professional" performance (as opposed to amateur or school performance), and I think that is a powerful tribute to the song itself. But my favorite is still Jerry Hadley. Not sure if there is a video of him singing anywhere.
organboi Yeah, he's so untrained that Björn and Benny wrote the song for him. He's like so untrained that Frank Sinatra called him the best singer of all time. Like, totally untrained!
Well traind Singer dont put as much hearts as Tommy Do .He do have a amazing voice . They just want to show how brilliant they are and often sound to mechanical .
@@carinaejag Just because it's the original version that doesn't mean I'm obliged to enjoy it more than any cover of it. There's no logic in such a suggestion.
@@kopia77 The only reason Josh sang this song is that the song was written in the first place so that someone could perform it. The original version could have been performed by anyone but that doesn't mean it truly is the best version. I'm not the kind of person who enjoys the original just for the sake of it. We should be open minded.
