I guess it's a good thing for everyone that he didn't know how to rip SID or MOD files for his game songs. At least someone from the demoscene would quickly figure out when they heard a familiar song. The Timbaland plagiarism incident comes to mind.

Beyond that too, he wasn’t even the first to compose CD quality music in video games. There was already a good number of PC Engine CD games that did an excellent job utilising the medium. As always he vastly over inflates his importance in the industry

If you ever needed further proof of Tommy's ignorance of the field he's supposed to have real talent in, it's this. Note that actually impressive video game composers don't talk like this. Tim Follin was a genius capable of crafting great music out of limited sound resources and I guarantee you there's no interviews of him talking down about what video game soundtracks were like before he came along. What makes this especially amusing is that Tommy claims he was discovered in 1991 by a producer with Virgin Mastertronic that noticed him because of his Turbografx 16 shirt. That console as well as its CD add on had already been out on the US market for over a year and so many of the latter games had elaborate music. So, either Tommy knew nothing about the system other than liking their t-shirts or the "bleeps and bloops" claim is just him lying yet again.

Tommy is trying to take credit for something that he didn't do on multiple levels, this has to be his most obvious and insulting ruse of all his ruses. Essentially, he's taking credit for somebody else taking a studio track from his "studio" and mixing it into a game. This requires you to believe that people have never played a radio in the background while playing a video game, ever. He then belittles the work of musical geniuses who rebuild and translate tabs into a gaming experience while traversing and manipulating the technological limitations. So yeah, it's a tad bit more than "bleeps and bloops". Tommy is like a homeless street performer making run of a rocket scientist. Which is ironic because Tommy can't actually perform, but he is homeless now and he had a rocket, but couldn't hustle up any fuel to try and get it off the launchpad.

Yeah, i seen him criticize the music that Jun Senoue made for Sonic Adventure one time in Electric Playground and then later on praise him on interviews due to his "involvement" for Sonic and The Black Knight lol. During the Gamecube era he tend to criticize Nintendo Composers using midi instruments and should be using "real" musicians when his own studio also make similar music which I find very ironic. Those are the cases that I remember in Electric Playground sometimes.

Lelanders told a story on a live stream one time about how he and his friend were volunteering for Video Games Live. The day of the show his friend was playing chiptune music outside to get the crowd hyped. When the show started Tommy opened up by making fun of him and called his music crap or something like that (I forget exactly what the quote was).

Tommy shows a lot of ignorance for video games so it could simply be he remembered late 70’s video game music and thought nothing had changed. The 16 bit and cd audio consoles were trying just what Tommy was doing. The PCE-cd even had guitars in 1992 before he did Terminator. So rather than being unique, he was part of a trend.

How fitting is it that people who composed for the NES are still getting praise in 2024 and Tommy Tallarico has to sell his gaming collection and his house? Now keep in mind, his only job has been making fart smell faces while air-guitaring to Castlevania music (not his own music). We've had the ability for years to just put a tape or CD on in the background while we played vintage games. Putting games on CD is what allowed studios to have music tracks and "bleeps and bloops" incorporated into 1 disc in unison, not anything that Tallarico's "Studio" accomplished.. Tallarico is just the Hornswoggle that stood on the backs of the Andre The Giants.

What does "bleeps and bloops" even mean? Does he mean sound effects? Did he invent the idea to play back music in games? Or does he mean chiptunes? In that case, the transition from chiptunes to tracker music and then streaming audio is obviously due to engineering advances in processing and storage technology. It's not like video game composers did NES-like chiptune music well into the PS2 era until Tommy suddenly had the idea to use pre-recorded streaming music. His claim is so far detached from reality that it is "not even wrong".

Castlevania 1 on the NES alone has more timeless music than his entire portfolio.

And Super Mario - the main theme of SMB (y'know, that one made of "bleeps and bloops") was inspired by fusion jazz ("real music"), especially some tracks by T-Square (iirc Koji Kondo appreciates them), so Tallarico's point is double invalid lol

Tommy leaves out the part about how music used to be made for that specific game and what he was doing at the time was shoehorning schlock rock into games. This was common on Sega CD which had Terminator AKA Tommy's claim to fame. If you played Spiderman VS Kingpin on Sega CD for instance, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It was simply a trend that passed. They were still trying to figure out how to utilize the potential of games in a CD format and Sega CD was a mere stepping stone while the consoles with the bleeps and bloops are still highly respected here in 2024.

When it comes to Sega Mega Drive/Genesis music, say what you will and what about Howard Drossin and Matt Furniss. At least Drossin knows how to compose rock music in both Comix Zone, The Ooze and select tracks that appeared on the Sega Channel, and while his tenure in composing VGM was sadly short-lived, at least he found a new occupation in his music career: orchestrating film scores. In addition, at least Furniss, while currently having a family of his own and having a different non-music occupation, managed to compose and arrange video game music with the self-taught availability he had during his start at making music for games and demoscenes. His music that was featured in many well-received games and shovelware titles were absolute bangers to listen to, especially Wiz 'N Liz and Puggsy. His own self-taught ways of composing music puts Tommy's non-existent composition skills to complete shame.
@Qwazin

Koji Kondo, David Wise and Tim Follin have pushed the envelope of what video game music can do. Tommy's studio produces forgettable stock music that he then later steals sole credit for. There is a reason people ALWAYS bring up Earthworm Jim in the conversation when talking about him, because the work Mark Miller did on that game is the only memorable melodic music Tommy has ever stolen credit for. The majority of Tallarico's productions are glorified pieces of elevator music.
@tcrlostremixnsplice6432
@tcrlostremixnsplice6432 6 месяцев назад
It's not entirely Mark Miller music either as Tony Bernetich worked on Andy Asteroids and Darkworm Rag. (He told me this in Linkedin) The main issue that Tommy studio just generally make music for games that are generally shovelware or just straight up not so good games. I don't think the music is good or bad by any means in my opinion, it just typical VGM stuff that people did better in the 5th generation. Tommy just loves to pretend that his studio has a major impact in the gaming industry when it's not too true. When plenty of japanese and european game composers have done more to the gaming industry then his studio ever accomplished.
@poboxchristmas380
@poboxchristmas380 6 месяцев назад
@@tcrlostremixnsplice6432 it's also silly that Tommy would think of his music during the Sega CD days as so advanced over bleeps and bloops when it was essentially 80's schlock rock style music shoe-horned into 90's games. It was outdated in that era of music.

You can MAYBE make an argument that the chiptunes the NES-era produced were "bleeps and bloops", but not once the Mega Drive with its FM sound chip, TG-16 with its CD add-on and the SNES with its sample-based sound chip hit the market, all of which pre-date Tommy's career in the industry. And that's not even including the PC-based hardware like the Sound Blaster that debuted around the same time as these consoles too.
