You know when a festival is shit when you don't have a legend like John Digweed as a headliner. This DJ is too much for that crowd. Its like offering a Grand Reserve wine to a teenager in a Mcdonalds
If you're an EDM teletubby type, you're not going to get this at all. House is the gangster of electronic music; EDM is the pop music of electronic music.
It's called techno/house. If you're publicly making the distinction to make yourself sound Starbuck's cool, then you're not with the history and progression of the art that is electronic music. Go ahead and listen then tell me I'm the asshole for being devoted for 20 years. I love haters almost as much as I love my music and my mother. soundcloud.com/jayrockskee/four
***** I was drunk when I typed that, and I have a Paraguayan girlfriend who loves to argue; she's rubbing off on me. It's not the smartest thing in the world to hit the send button fucked up, or even reading for that matter. My eyes are in great shape, though. appreciate the concern. Cocaine's a hell of a drug.
If you're the kind of type that recently 'discovered' EDM, you will not get this at all. If you don't know the basics of it all, then you don't appreciate a well built set. This is complete the opposite of what happens at the main stage. A well built set 2 or 3 main tracks an hour with a lot of other tracks around to built some tension. The main stage is a shitstorm of bangers (or anthems) with each the same structure (main part - breakdown - building and the banging moment). Some people like the same shitstorm every hour. Some people like to discover new tracks. That's why John Digweed (among other great names) is still considered underground and other EDM.
Still the best DJ ever. It feels weird to see him play in daylight outdoors. JD's music is down and dirty, perfect for sweaty indoor night clubs where you dance and grind until dawn. I see a lot of EDM fans hating on his style. It's a lot more subtle (and mature, IMHO) for sophisticated music lovers. JD has an uncanny ability to get you focused on the groove / melody, pushing his earth-shaking, chest-pounding bass drum into the background, like a heart beat. It's quite a feeling and hard to describe. Also, he must be experienced live. Nobody reads a crowd better than Digweed.
Mashuri Clark Absolutely hit the nail on the head. For a really long time, I thought that only a handful of listeners including myself shared your exact opinion. Digweeds music is infectious for those who critically listen to music. For the most part, his sound is 'down and dirty'(as you mentioned) with growls and 'bleeps'. His sets are dark and urke with 'hooks' that define the word 'groove'. These are only a few aspects that most EDM listeners simply don't 'hear' and/or comprehend. For me personally, Digweed is the reason I was able to really dig deeper into the technicality and musical aspects of EDM, not just mindlessly listening to the genre. 'He needs to be experienced live' is nothing but the truth. He used to have an event at Club Mayan that happened only once a year on a Wednesday. He intentionally had the event in the middle of the week because he wanted his true fans, sure enough every Mayan event sold out. I heard some of his best sets at the Mayan. Its a shame it ended.
John probably the only dj who was really djing during his set. Look, he is looking at screen, using headphones and turning knobs. Not like other edm shit every second screaming "Make some motherfuckin noise" and playing prerecorded set. I am so sick of that "motherfuckin" word. Djs please don`t say it! Thats not cool anymore
i had never personally heard of this guy till i watched this i rather enjoyed it but reading the comments i cant understand why people have to like one type of this genre and then say the rest are shit edm may be considered mainstream or commercial but i enjoy it just as much of this its all a matter of taste or opinion there is no need for all this hate if you like this and not edm it doesn't make it shit it is just an opinion and the same goes for liking edm over this its just a different type of music broaden your horizons people!!
Because at some point John Digweed, Sasha, Tiesto, Armin van buuren, Paul van dyk, were the Top 10 globally and were of the best, along with others like Mauro Picotto, Ferry Corsten, Danny Tenaglia, Gigi D'Agostino, etc. And because at that time were not known: Hardwell, Afrojack, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Deorro, Dvbbs, and are now ''the best djs''
I like all the sub-genres of EDM. Trance, trap, progressive house, even big room. Because I like to mix, I also like to expand my genres. Thanks to Digweed's set, I've started looking into more techno too.
Digweed used to be a progressive house/trance DJ but most of his peers (Sasha, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia, etc...) have switched to a more Techno sound due to the progressive house sound becoming mainstream.
God some of you guys on here wouldnt't know real music if it came along and bit you on the ass John Digweed is a legend, go and listen to the Renaissance mix cd's he did with Sasha then post again...
I like that Diggers is still spinning at these big festivals. If he's not playing true electronic music to the crowd, how is at this kind of place? At least with him there, there's a chance that all the recent "EDM" fans might discover real music.
Can't understand why almost everybody loving this, hates EDM. Especially because all of them talk about how Martin Garrix suck, it shows how narrow minded they are. Come on, love your music, don't hate others. For myself, I enjoy both this, Axwell Ingrosso, Dannic, Jack Ü, Oliver Heldens and a whole lot others.
Techno stuff is on the way to main stream. It goes in cycles just as hard rock camed back from the death. People just need to get tired of the current hardstyle crap and we'll see new techno soul hybrids soon. It just maybe have to ad some more harmonies sometimes to please the crowd
This is real music. Shit you can actually move to. Look at all the EDM kids completely lost because they don't have some generic voice over, countdown or build up to let them know when the beat drops and subsequently look like they care. What a weak crowd. I find the best shufflers at the tech house, DnB or Hardstyle stages too. Coincidence? I think not.
I feel sorry for these guys who just don't realize what Mr Digweed means to electronic music, hey edm fan if you really love this music, you should at least have an idea about Mr Digweed. Peace.
your right, jayrock, we used to call it progressive house,,the headringin stuff played at 7am now progressive is what is coined by the aviccii's and hardwell, spinnin records groups,,no love lost to spinnin, claude von is makin money on a label he doesnt even release his own underground sounds on...so he is havin his cake both ways
