Toms River High School South is legendary at the Jersey Shore for its spirit, tradition and pride. Mr. David Correll, Sr., a much beloved and now retired history teacher, is widely credited with starting many of South's traditions and keeping the school's spirit strong. After hearing "The Voice of the Indian" at a football game, South alumna Sandy Levine was inspired to pay tribute to Mr. Correll, who is marking his 50th year of involvement in the Toms River schools. The story premiered on TV-21, Toms River Regional School's station, on January 17, 2014.

I graduated 1954! My career has always taken me back to the school of my childhood. TRHS was great in the years I matriculated there. From that firm foundation in education I went on to get a BA from the University of Minnesota, a JD from William Mitchell College of Law, and a MFA in Photography and Painting from the University of Minnesota. Most recently I was a college professor. When we graduated 90 of our class went to college and the other 20 went forward with other careers. The teachers were the best and inspired all students to go forward in their lives with dignity, patriotism, and to serve others. I am proud to have been a TRHS alumni!

should have been class of 2001. I moved. But having him as my cheerleading coach as a freshman is still one of my favorite memories.

Mr. Correll is a great person who puts a lot of commitment into the school. That's why Indians should be proud to go to that school. Because of all of the spirit and dignity. {Besides the kids in my grade who do drugs or skip class} Class Of: I haven't graduated yet ;)

Just thinking of Mr. Correll makes me want to be a better person than I was the day before. I still tell the story about his "Chicken Catch a Tory" lecture regarding the battle of Toms River. No need to wonder, Mr. Correll. You had a positive influence on all of us.

Nice... Our 1974-78 marching Indians band was a bit bigger. We had a line of 8 tubas and at least 16 trumpets... Don't remember exactly

I had totally forgotten about Mr Correll's Chicken Catch A Tory bit. I really enjoyed his class. I do remember singing about Henry Clay: "Oh yes....he's the Great....Compromiser...ah oh....ah oh.... Compromising the whole day through...." Go South!

I still remember Mr. Correll's "Chicken Catch a Tory" lecture. I was pleased to see below that Scott Weigold remembered that lecture, too. I would love to have a transcript of the whole story. I followed the lecture hook, line, and sinker, until he got to the punch line. :) Thank you for such a great article to show appreciation for a great man. Cheryl (Miller) Jackson, class of 1981

Class of 2010 for me. But I stayed some more years as a super senior so I could take the bus to Voc. I did do the walk and ceremony with my class in 2010 though.

I just graduated last year, and you’re right. The spirit has unfortunately faded away... the band is the only thing that kept the spirit.

Mr. Correll is a true icon. When I remember South I think of him being "the voice." What a great man. And being at South made me look into an older college with traditions, I'm glad I went. Thank you for all the memories Mr. Correll. - graduate class of 2004

Thank you Sandy. I have loved Mr. Correll and TRS since my freshman year. I met him during summer band rehearsals in 1975 and just knew that this man was amazing. His speech to all of the band 9th graders inspired me to be a good person. It still inspires me to work harder and to be the best "me" I can be. He inspired me then, and he continues to inspire me, as do my thoughts of the traditions, spirit, and people of our beloved Toms River South. Other schools might say they have a lot of "school spirit", but I can't imagine anything better than how we were taught. I might be older, but you can still see the TRS pride in my eyes. Class of '79.
