Class of 2001. I wore the same kind of pseudo-lounge shirts that were popular after Swingers back in 1999. Had the way too long sideburns too. Classic.

I graduated in 2001 and yes the 90’s were better. People were social and a whole lot nicer. I miss the non-cellphone years. Humanity truly lost something. If I could go back I would. The Matrix came out that year. Now we live in it.
What I notice is how the relationship between the teachers and kids is so healthy it’s so nice, the teachers for once look happy doing their jobs and enjoy it.
This video doesn’t represent the majority. Trust me. I remember my elementary school days back in 2001. Kids and teachers didn’t get along. And this is supposed to be high school just 2 years prior to that. Yeah, it’s just because it’s the end of the year
@@amuroray9115You were a baby lol. I was actually in high school about this time, and this is what school was like. Of course this was a little more lighthearted being the last day of school. But we actually did have good relationships with our teachers for the most part, especially by the time we were seniors. As long as we acted like young adults, they treated us like it. And our teachers still dressed and acted like professionals (as opposed to teachers wearing t-shirts and jeans to work these days) so the dynamic was just a bit different.
They did enjoy it! But back then, kids were super respectful to teachers. They were told by their parents to respect authority figures. So they did their homework and they weren't assholes. Kids today are assholes. It's poor parenting by GenX. One of my best friends is a teacher and he said the majority of his students are assholes that just refuse to do homework and are disrespectful. So...yeah...how can teachers be expected to love their jobs?
@@trinitylivingston1286 U don't look like a middle schooler u look like someone from your age group. If u look at high school kids in the 50s you'd b surprised how mature they look. A 60 y/o's HS pic own't be the same as yours. Every gen of HSers looks less mature than the one before it
The way they dressed, the way they talked, the way they acted, the way their hair looked, all so different from now. Everyone seemed alot nicer and healthier without social media.
I was 12 at the time, and you have to realize that it wasn't just that people weren't occupied with phones all the time, it's also that, get this, being on camera was a RARE occurrence. It was special. When someone came around with a camera you perked up a little, cracked a joke, or you'd try to hide, etc. Now everyone is filming everything 24/7, and the rare occurrence is when people don't.
So true. I was born in 82. I miss those days. We went out and lived in the moment instead of trying to film every moment. Instead of filming a sunset for Facebook or whatever, we sat on the grass and just enjoyed life.
I graduated in 2000 and this is how HS was for me. Just imagine, 6 years until RU-vid. Facebook is 5 years away. Even MySpace was 4 years away. I didn't own a cell phone until I was 25. It was definitely a different time.
Not true back then your camera would getting taken by the school. Folks were chill about the camera because it wasn’t common back then. That was a pure luxury item and everyone was amazed by them. The first digital cameras were the size of bricks smh.
Yeah, because everybody just figured the video would end up in a shoebox under somebody's bed and never be seen. Now days everybody is worried it'll go viral and 50M people could end up seeing it.
As someone who graduated in 2015 this looks like such a nice time. Not a phone in sight people actually talking face-to-face, I wish I could have grew up in an era like this.
i graduated in 2015 also and it was mostly like this. stuff like snapchat/instagram was just becoming big but we weren't yet like the kids today who are on their phones 24/7. we still interacted mostly in person
Graduated in 1988 it was better times for most we still had our issues but nothing like these kids are going through today the kids knew there place as did the school. Much better times
watch the video completely and pay close attention to the differences to the present time, then you will know why it will never be the same again as it was then.
99 Things with Ryan Briggs Video tape must degrade horribly because the quality of this video looks like something from the early 80s. Not 1999. I should know, I’m 35 years old and I don’t remember video looking this crappy at the dawn of the 21st century. I’m shocked actually. Either that or it was taken on a really old camcorder. It’s bizarre.
@@kconrad5893 I graduated in 99 myself. Theres so much about watching this that seems off, and it's not issues with the capture quality. Theres been few people who look anything like teenagers in 1999. This video feels way more like late 80s. The clothing, hairstyles, its just wrong.
Electrocudead Twitch Right??? Thank you! It’s so bizarre.....maybe it was a really small town or something where they were behind the times? This is not at all the 1999 I remember at all. And what’s even more ridiculous is that these kids who probably weren’t even alive are arguing with me about it.
I was class of '98 and it wasn't that much different than what you see here. Huge school. Banter, fun, bullying, fitness - no social media, barely any fat kids, no phones. I feel bad for kids these days. I'll never forget this one girl who would sit behind me and play footsie with me. Looking back, what a golden era.
@@an0therdimensi0n99 Billion-dollar corporations use science to make smart-phones addicting while other corporations push adoption of the tech to increase production/output.... the average people are victims not perpetrators.
@@locus3392 I just now panned down to the comments and saw someone said something kind of similar but it honestly was the first thing that came to my mind less than a minute into the video, thought it was so cool.. innovative even, well for that time period.
Class of 2005 here. I definitely knew what life in 1999 was like for school. It feels very long ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. We talked to each other, had broad rangesof music in the mainstream to listen to, and we were optimistic about the future.
Damn.. Makes me so envious. They live in such a peaceful time. Never worrying about a thing. Never rushing to be anywhere. No phones. Everyone is present and everyone is a part of the school... Everyone is kind. Things have completely changed.
I mean, we were still people in those times, so there was a variety of personalities. And this was the last day of school, so it's pretty laid back. And we had busy days sometimes, with packed schedules and such. But you're right-- we were present and didn't have the added stress and distraction of a cell phone constantly trying to pull us away from the real world. And while we have fewer photos from those times (no camera phones), we have richer and deeper memories, because instead of filming and posting things, we were feeling and fully experiencing them.
Class of 1998 here! Sheldon Clark High School in Eastern Kentucky. Our years of high school really were the best. We were witnessing technology become socially acceptable but we were all much more happy hanging out, listening to music, talking about any and everything, and just really enjoying life. I miss those days and feel sorry for kids today that they will never know what a life not glued to their screens actually has to offer. Take me back to the 90's, sir! Salute!
Look at the freedom and autonomy kids had back then. It's no wonder we're still all so immature in our 30s. We were treated like Toddlers in High School. These kids got to be individuals and wear clothes and just live life.
I graduated High School in 2005. So I was in middle school in 1999 and even middle school was memorable. Everyone socialized outside between the main building and cafeteria building. High School was the same way. Everyone socializing outside. Yes, there was internet and cell phones when I was in high school but it was no where like it is now. Smartphones hadn't taken over yet and people weren't looking down at their phones unless they were about to call someone. I remember we had to use Ask Jeeves when searching for things. lol The 90s were great as a kid. Overall I think that everyone was much happier and more active back then.
I almost cried listened to the AP teacher wishing his student well; he sounded like my favorite AP History teacher 😢. I was in HS in 99 and this footage literally felt like I was transported back, if only for 20 minutes. It was a nice trip ☺️
Wow watching this is almost healing. Im 45 (class of 97) and even though i didnt go to this school it just takes me back to that time. A time of freedom and fun. A time when mom took care of me still. A time when being funny with your buddies and talking with girls was everything. Then life hits and it hits hard, and youre scrambling to keep your head above water. 😄
Their all fully dressed, not looking the same, cute without having to be extra and loud and explicit. Their all just doing them it looks chill and their all just doing their own thing
I'm currently a school teacher and it seems from my memory and from this video that many of these kids back in the late 90s seemed have a much more natural sense of humor, maturity and confidence than the kids I interact with today.
Dam no wonder why they cast people who are in their twenties to play high school students rather than actual teenagers play high school students because the high schoolers back then looked so much older and the ones now look goofy as hell and look mad young.
I graduated high school in 1995. I miss those days not just because I was young but because people were normal and not so self obsessed like they are today. I have children of my own and hate the world they're growing up in. The world was a much, much better place in the 1990s.
Damn. I don’t know why this came up randomly on my feed, but I do know I got choked up knowing that we no longer know this life. I graduated CVHS in La Crescenta in 2000, & man - those were some of the best days of my life. When I hear people say they hated HS days, I can’t comprehend it - I’d do anything to go back, especially to have the warm chocolate chip cookies during break. 😋
To me from 1990 to 1994 were like 1986 to 1989. Then from 1995 to 1997 were similar to me as for as style goes. Then 1998 to 1999 were the same, in my opinion.
No one had a problem to be filmed because they didn’t have the “fear” to do something wrong or stupid and end up on the internet where everyone can watch them and laugh at them, nowadays you wouldn’t be able to record so freely like this
99 Things with Ryan Briggs It makes me sad that I wasn’t In high school at that time, it must have been a blast. I graduated in 2010. I can’t imagine how sad high school must be now.
99 Things with Ryan Briggs well, you did a great job,now we are looking back on You Tube and seeing how society changed and memories. You created a time travel.Thank you for that.I graduated high school in 2003,by the way.
Wow.. I was in high school back then, it’s crazy how much has changed in what doesn’t feel like that long ago, seeing 1999 from 2023 makes it feel so incredibly retro 😂 back then like any era.. it was just normal life, I think things were just simpler and happier though, by a long way.
@Ivan Stemberga that's right! In fact, most middle-class households owned a video camera. But they were cumbersome and required cassettes, so people rarely recorded with them unless it was a special occasion. Which is why I said that "being recorded was so rare" :)
As someone who was in high school in the late 90s, people were more social back then. Random people would come up to you and strike up a conversation. You don't really see that nowadays. This is why is seems like everyone knew each other back then.
@@AntiMasonic93 frr 😭 i wish people were still social like that. now everyones just anti social and if you didint know anyone from elementary yout screwed like me lol
As someone who graduated in 2002, I truly appreciate this time capsule. It is an important video that illustrates how many technological revolutions we've had in my relatively short lifetime - computing, internet, smart phone and generative AI. It is hard to believe sometimes how different my life was then compared to now. I feel like a dinosaur when my young children ask me questions about my youth.
Interesting. Around the time you were a junior, I was barely born. I experienced the 2000s to a limited extent and I remember it fondly, wish I was able to experience more of it
@@HatredInTheFlesh It was a pretty fun time to be honest. It seemed like every day there was a new technological wonder that was fun and interesting to use and we had not yet found ways to hurt people using it. Also, interacting with other people was just the natural state of existence. I feel like it is now less so.
eaflores it’s funny cuz it’s the opposite of what you’re implying. Smoking in high school was much more common back then which makes you look way older. Since there’s more information about smoking now and it’s less accessible, people don’t do it as much.
Hey i make video-edits for your fav movies/songs and would love any feedback you could give! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K9zLA8Gj3CU.html
Im going to be honest with you. I used to always get annoyed when people said social media was a waste of time. But this video made me realise why, Even in 2010 people still looked like this. i always wondered why the 2000s were amazing and this video made me realize why. Social media and IG sucks. Simple. People are better.
You’ll notice that seniors in years past look like adults and are huge! Now seniors in high school look much younger and are relatively smaller/shorter.
Well it’s sort of self selecting. People who were awkward probably made sure not to be on camera. Also, they all assumed that only they would ever see it anyway. They might have been more awkward if they knew millions of people were going to eventually see it one day.
I think they were more accostumed to socializing, nowadays technology took that away from us, if someone put a camera in front of me just like that i wouldnt know what to say.
@@AS-yd1hk I'm happy to hear that but in my reality (in my school, city etc.) society became more likely to give up on their own personal dreams just to be liked by some "friend" or by stranger in public
I grew up in Covina and West Covina. I started West Covina HS in 88 as a freshman not for long. Ended up in Upstate NY for the rest of my HS years. I came back to West Covina in 93. This was a great time capsule of a familiar place.
This shit is crazy. This guy took a time machine forreal fr. This man said, "see how beautiful the girls were back in this time." Dude knew the world was gonna see this video
