Monuments guitarist John Browne brings another round of 7-string wizardry to the Tone Sessions. The song “Stygian Blue” is a brand new, unreleased song from the band’s early 2016 writing sessions for their third Monuments album, due out this year.
This playthrough is a great showcase of the versatility of the Mark Five: 35 and also highlights it’s potential in real world high gain rock & metal gigging applications. Classic Mark Series crunch, gain and solo sounds are provided in Ch. 2. Combined with the graphic EQ and multi-speaker closed-back cabs like 2x12s and 4x12s, the punch and tone is massive and big-gig ready while offering the snarl and sparkle of Mesa’s well-regarded four EL-84 Dyna-Watt power section. The Mark Five: 35 is even offered as a 4-space rack mount for those looking to build compact gigging/touring rigs.
Recorded with John Browne’s Signature Mayones Duvell Qatsi guitar with Bareknuckle Ceramic Nailbomb pickups into the following signal chains:
Ch. 1 Clean: Mayones Duvell Qatsi JB Signature Guitar with Bareknuckle Ceramic Nailbomb - Jim Dunlop MXR Carbon Copy - Origin Effects Cali 76 Pedal - Mark Five: 35 - Rectifier 4x12 Traditional Straight
Ch. 2 Rhythm: Mayones Duvell Qatsi JB Signature Guitar with Bareknuckle Ceramic Nailbomb - Reaper Pedals JB Signature Pandemonium OD - Boss NS 2 - Mark Five: 35 - Rectifier 4x12 Traditional Straight
Ch. 2 Lead: Mayones Duvell Qatsi JB Signature Guitar with Bareknuckle Ceramic Nailbomb - Jim Dunlop MXR Carbon Copy - Reaper Pedals JB Signature Pandemonium OD - Boss NS 2 - Mark Five: 35 - Rectifier 4x12 Traditional Straight
Recorded with the Mark Five: 35 Head and 4x12 Rectifier Traditional with Vintage 30 speakers. Mic’d with a Shure SM57, Mojave MA-301 FET and the CabClone.
Ch. 1 Clean: Mixed 50% Mojave MA-301 and 46% CabClone w/ Open Back Cab Sim and 4% Stereo Room Mic for ambience
.
Ch. 2 Rhythm/Lead: Mixed 33% SM57, 33% Mojave MA-301 30% CabClone w/ Open Back Cab Sim and 4% Stereo Room Mic for ambience.

+Flint Cole Yeah I agree, I listened to the singles and thought they were awful except for Orchid but then listening to them in context, they're actually good. The Hypnotist is amazing. Knowing the current state of the music industry, record sales generally don’t account for much income for musicians. Aside from pop genres, most musicians make money through side projects/jobs and merch sales which are barely enough to pay for the tours themselves. Thats why alot of musicians are also producers and sound engineers. Sad truth.

Keeps it interesting without loosing the listener with a bunch of extra notes. Seems these days going into 2024 alot of guitarists of this genre think it's some kind of competition to see how many notes can be crammed in between riffs and makes it ( in my case ) very hard to listen too. Thank you John Brown.

Really good insight from a phenomenal guitarist. Ive grown to appreciate John's riff and downward stroke technique after attempting to learn several tracks of the amanuensis album (Horcrux being my favorite), I, The Destroyer, and origin of Escape. I find my frethand has no issues but my right hand picking technique is holding me back. Furthermore I want to wright at the caliber this an does. I had not realized John WAS Flux Conduct (The shroud is awesome as piano being my first instrument). I am struggling to right y own riffs but transferring my ideas from my head onto guitar has for the first time stumped me lately

John has one of the best right hands in the business, Taylor. It's a great example and reference to follow but keep at it. Taking the cues of the people whose music we dig is a great way to add ideas and techniques to our own playing. Thanks for watching!

I'm in the market for the 35 or 25W head. Just wondering why all the demo videos the cabs are mic'd and they are not using the cab clone DI...? Thx
@mesaboogie
@mesaboogie 8 лет назад
Hi V8C100 - thanks for your interest! If you read in the descriptions below of all of our videos, you'll see that the Cab Clone is almost always blended with the mics we use to capture our amp demos. The CabClone is great for situations where you're not able to use a mic, but in situations where you are able to use a great mic, you will always be able to capture more dynamics from the power section, the cabinet, the mic and the room itself. The CabClone signal offers great blending options to mic'd sounds as well. When we make demos for our amps, we always attempt to show them sounding their best with the best capture technology we have available so people have a clear sense of what our amps sound like when they make purchasing decisions. The CabClone or any other passive direct box is a great feature, but by itself does not represent the full range of what is available from an amplifier in a modern recording environment, hence using multiple points of capture like mics AND direct signals. Hope this helps, let us know if we can answer any further questions and good luck in your search! :D

Thx Mesa. I bought your Mark V:35 head and am still learning how to tame this animal - love it! Running through my 1960A cab. I've tried running cab in 2x12 only for bedroom but I still have to drive the amp too loud to get the tone I want (even in 10w). Would a 1x12" Mesa cab allow me to push it harder at lower volume? If so, from the 3 you offer, what is the best for Petrucci sound? Also, mic wise, any recommendations? Thx. PS: Doug West makes me smile as each vid he is in you can tell he truely has one of the best jobs in the world - legend!

Hi LondonGuitar! What kind of band and are you looking at a combo or a head and an extension cab? If your drummer is *extremely* loud and you use PRISTINE clean sounds, you may run out of headroom for absolutely sparkling clean sounds, however, there is definitely no shortage of power for gain sounds, particularly if you use the head and a closed back extension cab like a 2x12 Rectifier cab. Hope this helps and let us know if you have any further questions - happy to help! :)

@mesa/boogie is it true that the 2x12 can I just got takes time to break the speakers in? If so how many hours approx as it sounds pretty harsh compared to my 15yo 1960A. Hoping the 2x12 wears in a bit 😣
@mesaboogie
@mesaboogie 7 лет назад
Hi VBLC - Some people believe that speakers need to break while others feel that a speaker never sounds as good as the first notes you play through it. I believe that if a cabinet (ESPECIALLY a Mesa cab) doesn't make your rig sound better, the first thing i would do is try and change settings on the amp. Broken in speakers vs. brand is a pretty subtle difference overall so if you have a new cab and it doesn't sound right, if it's a Mesa cab, maybe check to see if the speakers are the ones that are supposed to come with it or look at other parts of the rig to see if you can adjust them to work well with your new 2x12. Almost everyone I've ever talked to has said adding a Mesa cab to their rig only made it sound better. breaking in won't fix something you don;t like, I don;t think. Hope this helps and let us know what you find out.
@V8LC100
@V8LC100 7 лет назад
MESA/Boogie thx for the response. I purchased a new MESA Recto vertical 2x12 with V30s based on research and online vids. Problem is I couldn't test it as very few dealers in Melbourne have stock so it was bought sight unseen which was a gamble. I also wanted to try the 1x12 ported cab but again finding one was impossible. So I plugged the vertical into my new Mesa Mark 5:35 and used the same settings and did a side by side with my old 1960A cab. I guess the MESA cab sounded different and to my ears a bit darker and obviously not as full as a 4x12 (I expected that) but the overall tone seemed a bit - how do I say...perhaps harsh or abrasive. Then again I'm used to my Marshall cab which I was told is "broken in" hence my original question. I've also been told to take the wheels off the 2x12 and sit on floor for more bottom end...any truth to that? Overall it's not a bad sound, it's just different to what I'm used to and I am sure I'll love it shortly. I guess the moral of the story is I wish I had of tried it and the 1x12 first as I think I would have ended up with the Theil 1x12 and keeping my 1960A. Dealers need to be more helpful when we are shelling out big bucks for gear. I appreciate your feedback MESA 👌
@mesaboogie
@mesaboogie 7 лет назад
Hey VBLC - Good stuff. I think we'll be able to get you on track with the cab. A couple of things: Taking the castors off and coupling the cab to the floor will always increase the bass response a bit and should make the cab sound bigger. As mentioned in another thread you commented in, comparing a 2x12 to a 4x12 is aloways a tricky game because a 4x12 will always sound bigger. That said, your 4x12 probably has G1275's, which are a brighter speaker in the upper midrange. Lots of people mistake this frequency range for high frequencies because it really jumps into your ear. So if you couple the 4x12 cab (with more bass) with brighter (high-midrange) speakers, you'll probably perceive bigger sounding cab with more highs and more cut - and this will make the 2x12 cab (less bass) sound darker and not as full. Boogie cabs are always 'smoother' and warmer so if you want some of the cut back, experiement with Treble, Presence and midrange settings on your amp that are higher when you're plugged into the Boogie cab. Also, start your day by listening and playing through the Boogie cab first for a while, then switch to the Marshall cab. If you start with the Boogie cab, your ear will be more used to what you start with. When you switch to the Marshall cab after playing the Boogie cab for a while it will seem brighter and might end up sounding more like the harsh cab is you start with the Boogie. Finally, the Thiele cab is a great cab but you wouldn;t have liked it more than your Marshall because it's just a 1x12. I think, over time, you'll like the 2x12. Let us know what you find out.

In this case, +Damon Stewart, John's overdrive pedal is not set to increase gain but is actually used like many players use OD - to control bass frequencies. I think the amount of gain you are hearing has a lot to do with John's technique/pick attack, and it probably also has a fair amount to do with the fact that the gain sections are double-tracked and panned, which always makes gain sounds more lush, saturated and thick. Oh yeah - there's also a lot of gain to be had in a mark Series amp, too... :)

This sounds really great and all, but why not have an artist come in and demo just the amp using one of their songs? I'd like to hear just the sound of the amp not going through a couple of floor pedals (at the least). And maybe even have them bring a stock guitar that most people will probably own. Not some signature model with boutique pickups. Again, this a GREAT sounding demo and all and I appreciate how the signal path was mapped out and explained (I wish all manufacturers and magazines who do gear demos would do that), but sometimes I'd like to hear just the amp and guitar.

@benphillips8174 8 лет назад
+Jaymze13 There's the official demo videos for that, as well as third party reviews. This way we get to see the amp actually in use as well rather than on its own without any kind of context.

+Jaymze13 Because 99% of bands use at least a couple of pedals, not to mention the countless plugins and hardware used post-cab for processing in the mix.

You're both correct. I just want to hear the raw sounds first. That's just me. I'm crazy...........

+LoganCovers91 that's what I thought. I was making sure I wasn't hearing that incorrectly, cause anup is a lot better than what I'm hearing here. Still stoked to hear the new album.

i thought he got his vader after he got the mayo deal. doesn't matter though. lol. while i got you here though is there any chance of you guys putting out a 35 watt dual rectifier?
@mesaboogie
@mesaboogie 8 лет назад
Not sure when/where his guitar specifics lie, but Mayo is indeed his main guitar endorsement as far as we're aware.wheresallthezombies As for a 35 watt Rectifier, that sounds like a great idea! :)
@wheresallthezombies
@wheresallthezombies 8 лет назад
Yes! lol. i was thinking of getting the 25 rectifier but decided i wanted a little more juice. And it'd be redundant if i got the mark 35, cause i have the full size one. boogie forever \m/ lol

Sadly, Elliott - the clean section was a little bit out of tune. The gain sections are in tune as they were captured separately. Thanks for watching!

+MESA/Boogie cheers for the reply, huge fan of yours and Browne but it seems like the whole guitar is like a quarter tone out or something, it just seems off. Great video anyhow!
