A lot of people don't know that Van damme and Michel Qissi (Tong Po) Were actually best friends growing up in Belgium, as kids they dreamed about moving to America and being movie stars, once they arrived in America they had so many set backs, they missed their flight, ran out of money, they would steal food to survive, they would clean toilets and gyms for accommodation, they were declined for numerous small movie roles, but they persevered for 6 years and never gave up. For me that's what makes the scene so much more beautiful, knowing how they got there.
True, they were best childhood friends. Not many people also know, that the actor playing Tong Po also played in Bloodsport movie as Suan Paredes (the one that got his knee smashed by Chong Li). On top of that he also has a brother, who played as a main antagonist in the movie Quest (with van Damme as well)
Just watched Game of Death again after years last night and this movie came to mind. i used to watch these with my stepfather too, truly iconic movies.

@@mikea5205 Not quite the same. In kickboxer, Tong Po dominates and outskills JC and batters him to within an inch of his life, but then Tong Po suddenly stands there and waits to be kicked. Not at all convincing. At least in Rocky 4, Rocky uses his skill and endurance to beat Drago. It is not one of these fights where it is one sided for the antagonist and then the tables turn 180 degrees in the second half. When Rocky is knocking down Drago in round 15 he is also getting hit in the face in the process and struggling to stay on his feet himself. Rocky and Drago trade punches through most of the second fight, and there is also the scene in round 2 where Rocky becomes confident for the first time after cutting Drago's eye. Ok, no one could take the beating Rocky took, but it was much more realistic than Tong Po vs Kurt.
They are lmao. I feel like they made the most sense in this movie than any other of his films that featured them. He had been dealing with so much of Tong Po’s shit throughout this movie and he was sick of it, you can feel the gratification in his “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” of finally getting to put a beat down on this lunatic 😂. Also out of Van Damme’s whole rouges gallery, I believe Tong Po’s beat down was the most gratifying as he deserved it the most(even more so than Chong Li.....which is saying a lot).
My god...the nostalgia! Man I still remember the late 80’s - early 90’s begging my mom to let me stay up on a school night whenever a Van Damme flick was on tv lol. It was always Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Lionheart or Double Impact. Van Damme flicks were the only ones I got a pass to stay up and watch cause she knew I was a massive fan of Van Damme(still am honestly).
People never truly understand how influential "Kickboxer" is to the world of Martial Arts, it's probably the 2nd most influential Martial Arts film in history second only to Bruce Lee's "Enter The Dragon".

He didn’t allow anything from Kurt.. Once Kurt’s brother was freed, the latter showed to this bastard his true level and he just couldn’t do nothing against our champion. That’s at that moment we all knew Kurt was at a completely different level when they fought.
@@ninotessier7795 What a crock of shit. Kurts moves were telegraphed and slow. Tong Po's reflexes were way more proficient before Kurt unleashed his so called power. Those moves were easily avoidable and Tong Po just stood there and took them for the sake of 'good guy wins now'.
Nothing like those good ol' 80s martial arts movies where the protoganist is initially getting his ass kicked only to make a miracle comeback at the end. 😂
Michael Williams at least they changed that cliche up a bit. Kurt basically could’ve beaten Tong Po’s ass from the beginning had it not been for his brother’s life being in danger, lol
And when we say kicked we mean totally annihilated, that combination to his face then torso the double fist to the face would have stopped anyone in their tracks, but oh no if we cut off the ropes all of a sudden all strength returns and the enemy gets weaker... Love it lol ;)
Absoutely legendary, the real days of acting without bs stuff. Again I echo what others have said, despite actors in that generation it was authetic and beautiful non the less. JCVD is a legend regardless off KB. His role in KB was beyond amazing. Loved all the cast, Michael who played Tong Po was legendardy, when watching this as a film (as a kid) I was terrified of him.
Fun fact: Tong Po is played by Michael Qissi who also appears as Moustafa in Lionheart (A.W.O.L.) one of the Legionaires sent to return Leon to base. His brother Abdel Qissi plays Attila in the same movie, and he also played the Mongolian fighter in The Quest.
@@metalhd4life Man some Pharang in Thailand got that titles. Guys like JC Skarbowski for example. This man was HUGELY respected in Thailand , for his Muay Thai , HUGELY. Actually they say he's not a pharang anymore.
As I child I must have seen this film 500x no joke always loved the way Tong Po fought, the way he walks with his hands and slaps his kness and elbows the way he does is great
This and/or Bloodsport were on TV damn near every weekend as a kid. TNT, maybe? My Mom didn't like the violence but let me watch it because she loved to stare at shirtless Van Damme

for those who don't know the guy who played tong po was also in the movie bloodsport. He was the guy who chung li broke his leg in the one fight scene. He really doesnt look like that in this movie that was makeup to make his eyes look like that.
Movies like this made my Dad enforce me viewing television in the full splits position or push up position in the 80's, 90's.... That's it. Currently I'm 36 and can still do splitz and thank Van Dam for his martial arts contributions and party stories of being a real badass.

Along with Bloodsport, this movie has a legendary soundtrack, very inspiring. Didnt know the actor/martial artist for Tong Po is in real life, brother of the actor/martial artist from The Quest, who plays the villain Khan. But I already knew he is on Bloodsport too, playing one of the fighters in the tournment The only thing in this movie that I complain, its that end so aprubtly! Kurt was always far more superior and drastically more skilled Muay-Thai kickboxer than Tong Po after the months of extensive, ancient style of Muay-Thai training kurt received from Master Xian. Before Master Xian trained him Kurt was merely a karate expert. Kurt couldn't fight back until Xian and Winston Taylor rescued Eric from Freddy Li's warehouse or his brother would've died. As brutal, relentless, merciless, far more experienced and physically more imposing/intimidating Tong Po was, Kurt, after Master Xian trained him in the intense, hard ancient way of training in Muay-Thai Kurt was overwhelmingly more skilled than Tong Po and destroyed Tong Po effortlessly without breaking a sweat and Tong po couldn't land one punch or kick. Kurt was just that much better due to Xian's Muay-Thai training. On his own Tong Po was clearly an extremely vicious, highly trained and skilled, experienced Muay-Thai champion and psychopathic killer. Hollywood logic for ya.
I was born in 90 and grew up in Europe. Now I live in Canada. I can say there’s absolutely nothing like 80s, 90s and early 2000s movies. They were an absolute masterpiece. That was the golden era of Hollywood.
This style of fighting I love. The bodies are in such good form. Upright and purposeful.. not sloppy like can be seen in some fighters. It makes it visually more appealing. It's the strength shown within the stances .. allowing the muscles to be seen as they extend and make contact. The upright and stableness within the moves and the flexibility combined. While fighters obviously need to be in shape for the impact they take and give.. it's not that physique I find appealing but what they are able to actually do with their bodies. This is what I used to talk about regarding this particular subject. Personally I'm not into abs like this.. but obviously for this style of fighting it's important to protect the stomach and inner organs. So I can appreciate the work they put into getting this physically fit. To be able to stand on one foot and keep such a steady strong balance while kicking with that kind of range and power is just mind blowing. To be able to hold it there that long. So again this is where the Asian Masters have an edge when it comes to understanding the balance between body, soul and mind. The self control needed and the respect that is needed to learn under them because it takes dilligence and time and effort to reach such a standard. Having to work on the emotional control as much as the physical and the mental to overcome pain thresholds. This is what the appeal was for me watching these kinds of movies growing up. It's also the relationship between the Master and student I found appealing. The closeness and intimacy in a non sexual way because they have to work together and that also means patience when confronting the personal issues that will arise as they learn to overcome their own carnal side. In this way I believe there is an exampleship of what Paul was talking about though he used a boxer as an example this style of fighting and Master, student also shows that understanding of overcoming the natural desire and harnessing the inner energy to then use it as an advantage. When all other senses are gone.. the ability to focus onwards to recenter and regather and be sensitive to the environment around. Feeling the energy and using the instinct and training. Understanding how the emotions can blind and interefere with the sight and reality of what lays before them or how to deal with it. The Master understanding that change is a process and everyone has different things to work through.. yet expecting dedication to change. Using wisdom of when to push and when to back away. Observing the body language.. observing the reactionary response.. observing the decision making.. observing the attitude. Knowing even the smallest change can make a huge impact. So when I hear people speak against these kinds of sports it can be offensive because there is much more than just fighting and being brutish. If a person was seeking God for guidance within this sport or training and the Master understood the importance of the need for loyalty to that I see not one issue within this fighting at all. I'm not sure of all the techniques used within this on the spiritual level.. I do love this kind of fighting though. I always have. It's stunning to watch. I can't pretend that I I don't enjoy it because I miss watching these kind of movies. For those of other deity's it's their own choice who they serve essentially.

Tong po was like Me Mei Ling ( Edit: Mylee) Goooooood Fuck during the fight All this was too piss him off, break him psychologically The minute he sees his brother and the crowd cheer start to cheer him on thats when he goes into beast mode or fights normally Get him Kurt! Shouts his brother from the crowd who was being held to make him lose the fight Then the crowd start cheering on for this white man warrior (Nok Suu Kow!), this was a psychological blow to the man like Tong Po who then let his anger get the better of him. Tong Po did not belive he could beat the younger brother of the american who hed crippled in an earlier fight who had vengence on his mind and was fully trained by the infamous man like Chan Chow! Tong Po's manager took precautions and had presumed that he would also rig the fight and help hmself and his crony mates at effing the bookies . Tong Po didnt believe in himself he knew his time was up, you could tell by his demeanor, body language, expressions of anger and loss and in his eyes the man was an open book. tong po legitimately gave me nightmares, as did chong li from bloodsport. but it wasn't this final scene, it was the locker room and ensuing fight with eric sloan. absolutely brutal and wonderful choreography for a B-movie. As much as I like Kickboxer 2, they had to slow-mo every fight due to hiring cody from step by step (I still adore kickboxer 2 and 3 - while 4 sucks donkey balls).
9:37 When I was a kid, my friend and I used to always do that double punch thing he does here, where he simultaneously punches Tong Po in the chest & stomach, when we would be pretending to fight with our Sting & Hulk Hogan wrestling dummies lol. Of course it wouldn’t be complete without that Van Damme “ewahhhhhhhh” sound effect 😂
That Thunderous Thud in the middle of Tong Po's Belly really seals the deal for Van damme , I had always been a great admirer of Jean Clude Vanne Damme work and this movie scene really rocks at the top of the Charts for me , LionHeart also has a similar arc to the climax fight scene .. sincerely out of this world
