Masterclass music production by Toni Visconti on classic Bowie song heroes must see for all producers and musicians clip from • Video music moguls education only
It’s included in the UVI String Machines 2 plugins. I got that because of the ARP Omni II used on Joy Division’s “Closer” album, but I’m only realizing today that I’ve got the Heroes “bee’s knees” sound as well!!!!!!
No work of art has had more impact and influence on me than this track. The production is so brilliant. Visconti to me is second only to George Martin for his innovations. He's terribly underrated. Hearing these isolated tracks is wonderful. I never would have been able to pick them out otherwise.
Simply crazy, Bowie, Eno, Fripp and Visconti absolute geniuses but also the rest of the band is fundamental. This shows that "Heroes" is one of the greatest musical masterpieces of the '900.
That "natural" reverb effect with the gated mics is brilliant. I knew that the howling vocal at the end had some magical quality that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Now I know why.
S2S for me, with Low a close 2nd. Then again, I was 17, living alone for the first time & owning my own motorcycle. Life was extremely intense & those albums of 76/77 are burned deeply into my own solidifying psychic circuitry. Quite a line, 🤔
its true that some of the its a cheesy sound compared to todays' options, yet the timbre and instrumental mix with guitars with the harmonium and melodicas, melotron, chamberlain etc... so moody and perfect!! nice video.. this is a treasure! thanks for posting
Fripp came in later, well there goes the story i heard that Fripp gifted to riff/song structure to David i read that on the video where KC with Belew do an amazing cover of heroes-London 3rd July 2000)
Honestly, David's voice sounds a little raw, brittle, on the isolated vocal track. Still one of the most powerful songs I have heard. His voice got much better when he got off the drugs and recovered for a few years.
Fripps ebow and Wimborne guitar is ripping thru the track. David particularly inspired and lovely gated reverb courtesy of Viscontis mix. Alomar insistent rhythm guitar is funky yet direct as well.
@ripplebear, correct - no ebow there, jut Fripp using amp feedback to hold the sustain. A similar sound can be created overdriving a tube amp with compression and the sustain knob cranked all the way
Heroes was the first bowie album I bought in the 70`s. I thought it must have been a complex undertaking with bowie seated for hours on end writing sheet music. The truth is he didn't, he just cobbled it together from improvisations!
When Tony says "the first interesting sound" ..then didn't point to the swimming bass, I felt just a tad snubbed for my 4-string brothers, gotta tell ya, had to be said. Is there more where he at least names the modulation effect?
Have a listen to the single version on the German "Helden" - single version. Between the last "Dann sind wir helden" -chorus and just before the fade out, you can clearly hear the low pianochords hammering towards the end. Have a listen to it with earphones on! :)
