@@AngeloFonta He lived in the Bromley area from 1955-1968. (and Beckenham from the same borough from 1969-1972) It was where he went to school and he even got married to his first wife Angie there. So I imagine it the area was probably very close to his heart. When I was a kid I used to live at 108 Canon Road, which I only found out about a decade ago was next door to where he and his family lived for a bit in the 50s :)

I had a similar story with George Foreman at a boxing event. I was right next to him as he was being escorted through the crowd and I said “George, I love your grills”. A silly joke but he instantly laughed and was giggling until out of reach. It always warmed my heart that I made someone like that laugh so much.

i met him in 1978 i was 17 years old, dressed as ''the thin white duke'' tux and tails, hair slicked back, white streak, white gloves. i met him in an elevator after his concert.David said to me..''you look terribly smart'' i thought i was going to faint. he signed my white glove''love on ya'' David Bowie. i can remember exactly what he was wearing. i asked him about Brian Eno..i have no idea why i hitch hiked in that get up from the country into the city!!!. he was so nice to me. Around the same time I had a chance to see Dylan (I worked at a radio station that sponsored his stopover in NJ) and passed on it. Such a stupid decision. I was turned off by his singing voice, but one of my co-workers who saw him said the same thing you did about just wanting to see him, the legend that he is. I really blew that one.

Fun Fact: Conan actually busted his D-String not his G-String but Bowie said it was the G-String probably because the joke only worked that way. Edit: And what's even better is that Conan went with it and didn't correct David because he instantly got it and didn't felt the need to appear smart.

What made Bowie so good is that he observed people. He just loved being around out in the world. He would spend his time, people watching, or just chatting up a random shop owner or maybe a random person at a park. He put his observations of life around him in his music.

He apparently wanted to keep it all to himself and endure it privately (with his family and a select few others, that is). I think he had lung cancer which then spread to his liver so his chances of survival were basically just not even there. In other words, because he knew he was dying, there was no public announcement like "yo, my days are numbered guys". This situation being dissimilar to other celebrities who get diagnosed, who then make the announcement, who then also announce their plans to fight it. I think his doctor just told him he needed to get his affairs in order and start preparing for the end, so rather than deal with the endless press and publicity that would come from his "battle with cancer" -- he just kept it quiet so he could be treated like a normal human being for the rest of his life. Also, it's a very private issue anyway, he probably just (rightfully) didn't think people had any business knowing until it was all set in stone -- even if said stone was his own gravestone.
