*UPDATE APRIL 2023 YALL!! I know I SUCK answering your questions and replying to comments. Honestly - I had a baby and kinda put RU-vid to the side for the past 2 years but I am BACK!! I will be doing better on replying to your comments and I will always answer my instagram DMs! I love you guys and am so thankful!! So so sorry for not replying. 🙏🏼💜
Hey y’all!! Welcome back to my channel!! Thank you so much for being here!
This video is a little different. I am going to take you along with me while I tone 3 of my blonde clients with Redken Shades EQ. I have seen a lot of stylist ask for formulas, but they don’t really understand when and why to use that specific formulation. I thought it would be fun to show you guys a few real life examples and explain exactly why I use the formulas I used! This video is very educational, especially for stylist who are new to Shades EQ or need a refresher. Shades EQ is definitely the best line to tone with in my opinion, and I’m very excited for y’all to watch this video and see some other reasons why it is so awesome!!
This video is also apart of my “Back to the basics” series. This series is going to be more about the nitty, gritty, basics of color and hair in general! It is more for beginner stylist or stylist looking to learn new techniques, etc.
I hope you all enjoy the video! Please let me know what you think in the comment section!
XOXO

Videos like this are soooo needed. I think that many educators feel that when newer stylists struggle with toning, it's due to a lack of knowing the color wheel. I disagree. We know the color wheel, but applying that understanding to different color lines who have their own color codes/lettering and package their contributing pigments within those codes slightly differently. The confusion comes from not understanding your product line and the contributing pigment that lies within the tube of color. I love how you first talked about neutralizing unwanted pigment, THEN toning for the desired result

This is the best explanation on how to tone. Well, done, exceptionally good understandable instructions . I needed this info so badly because I was totally confessed about the exactly the things you discussed. Thank you so much. Please keep making your informative videos. And one more thing.....I really like that you got straight to the point without a lot of unnecessary words. So many videos I can’t get through about hair coloring because of their annoying chatter. A real professional you are, indeed.👍🏼

Thank you for walking us through your thought process! I've been using Shades EQ behind the chair for almost 4 years and I feel like I never really understood what I was doing. I would hit the mark most of the time but barely and without really understanding what I was actually doing. You also affirmed for me that I do need to develop a better understanding of each Shades formula- like what are the building blocks of a 7NB or a 9AA so when I use them can get a little more predictability with my results. Love it!

Wow! You are an excellent teacher! I understood the basics of toning, but your step by step process and reference to the color wheel and explaining undertones make it all crystal clear! I'm a natural level 1. I've got sort of an Ombre balayag-y type situation going on from mid length at 7-ish to the tips at a 9. I used 9P on the very ends last go round and it was beautiful! I plan to do much more highlighting next go and this will help with toning out all that orange! Thanks for the vid! Looking forward to more!

You explained that so well. I went to a Beauty College and did not learn much in the way of Color. Sometimes there was no instructor at the school at all and when that would happen they would have a student that was not too far from graduating instruct the students. Also, the school was very dirty. They would water down the blue disinfectant to where it looked almost like water . There were people that got an infection from manicures. I had zero respect for the owners.

Great video!!! I am a level 10/11 and have used the Goldwell Blondes high lift colors in 11SV, 11A and 11P (I’ve used all of them) with their 2:1 30 volume developer. For a toner I used to use the redken 9V platinum ice but it can over-ash my hair a LOT which is then so dark it basically takes away the blonde and it takes a lot to get it out. And so it defeats the purpose. Redken as you know now makes a level 10P which I was going to try out. Any suggestions for me? I actually bought the 9T and I was scared of having silver hair. I think maybe I would need 9V + 9T + ?? I use the redken developing lotion when I do the toner. Lastly, I love the idea of a root tap. Haven’t heard of this and want to try it. 7NV sounds right.

This video is soooo good !! My mistake is always that I want a super light but also ashy tone , but because of balayage there are some darker pieces... But I tend to tone with level 9 so I'm going to tone with an 8 in the future. Also Im Always so afraid of mixing a super warm tone like the AA in , because I always tend to prefer the super cool, grey ashy tones. Also I'm afraid that a N level will make the darker not as much lifted parts too warm. But overall I'm so on love with these shades eq tones 💓
