Chipping a multi-colored camouflage would normally require LOTS of layers of different chipping effects. The most ideal way to create this effect would be the hairspray method, but since we painted this camouflage with a paintbrush, it wouldn't be possible. So, to make it more efficient, fun and presentable at the same time, it's time to LIFE HACK our way through the process.

Hey there my friend. You are the most talented and knowledgeable person with paint and painting I have ever watched. I would be one happy person if I had just 1/4 of your knowledge of paint and how to apply it. I can't believe the thing you come up with and then make it your own. I have just got back in to modeling. After about 40 years. I use to build large wood sailings ships. For many years. But this time I wanted to get into arom. I guess it had something to do from when I was in the military. My first one I chose the tamiya sherman 4. It was the tank my uncle drove in world war 2. It was his 3rd tank. They got hit and destroyed the tank in the battle of the bulge. From a tiger. That's what he thinks. He lost a big part of his leg. That is way I am building that one first. Well enough. I just wanted to say how talented you are and thank you for the videos. Stay happy and safe

it's really nice to have another video going over chipping. Especially a discussion about chipping multi-coloured camo. Personally I've been edging towards using different colours for the 1st chipping layer for the different camo colours, but thats because my camo colours are very different (very light grey, very dark grey, and blue). Came to the same conclusion about skipping a primer chipping layer though. Messed around with it but after the rust tones you really cant see a difference

Excellent tutorial Martin! I'm with you... interest over total realism is key with me as well. I enjoy the process of chipping and giving my models a well-worn look and your right most combat vehicles only last a few weeks or days in the field but how boring is a non-weathered model... right? Always a pleasure to watch your content, my friend. Cheers!

Who would want Night Shift in their army? "Come on, Trooper Night Shift, the enemy are coming". "Hold on, I've done the colour modulation but I haven't finished chipping the paintwork yet, and I'm sure a little more fuel spilt around the filler cap will make my tank MUCH more interesting...."

I hate the discussion about realism in scale modeling. Scale models are not about realism, it's all about making an impression. That's why rust, mud and scratches are so popular, these techniques let modeler create an impression - that this vehicle was fighting somewhere or was used a lot. It's not about realism - I saw few pictures of German Panthers completely covered in thick layer of mud. So you obviously can cover whole tank in mud - 100% realism - but it will look bad, will not create proper impression. There is similar problem with colours. I used to carefully choose colour, check it few times before painting. And after few kits finished I looked back and felt stupid. I airbrushed historically accurate colour and changed it completely with filters, washes and other effects. Just don't be a slave of realism and historical accurancy, because it is not achievable. Have fun, make impressions :)

I usually used rust for rust effects. It is also really cheap for what it gives. I just have a piece of iron, I put it in water over the night if it needs more rust on it. After that I simply file it down, it'll be a fine powder. You can simply apply it with enamel to the paint, just be careful. It is easy to go overboard, and the rust can build up fast, so practice first on a piece of painted plastic or something. If you ever wanted to paint a derelict tank that has been in a swamp for 70-80 years, and most of it is rust, well this technique is for you. XD :D Just a note, I don't know why, but it doesn't need blending, the rust always unifies into a nice rusted surface.

I was just thinking, on the armored vehicles that I work around, there are always deep gauges taken out of the side skirts, and the area all around the hatches are worn down to the metal. if you want, I can email close up reference photos to you, from any position and angle you want (mostly American, but sometimes Soviet, Arab, German or polish)

Random fact, the reason weld beads do not rust is when you weld large metal panels if you use normal steel filler rods the weld tends to crack, you don't get these cracks with stainless steel filler rods.
