Blair's valedictory at the Labour Party conference in 2006 just as he steps down as British Prime Minister.
Regardless of any differences in politics between you and him, unlike anybody since, this is the ultimate example of a geniune political leader who took ownership of his party and the issues of his time while seeking to resolve every single one of them - not insignificant.

On globalisation, "with these opportunities comes huge insecurity" On energy "scarce energy sources mean rising prices and will threaten our country's economy" On welfare "..4 million on benefit, many of whom could work, almost 1m less than there were, but still too many" TB spelled out issues in 2006 years before the mainstream media and the public caught on. Say what you like about his foreign policy, he knew the issues Britain faced at the time (pensioner poverty, poor public services, a poor NHS) and knew the issues to come (spiralling welfare bills, globalisation - economic growth in the east and the ensuing demand in materials and energy). Gordon Brown was unable or unwilling to act on Blair's words. The Coalition slow to catch on too. Only now seven years later are these issues coming to the fore, their impact made worse because Britain has ignored them for so long. TB spelled out the challenge to come. From where I'm sitting, its a challenge Britain is ducking. Looking to the likes of UKIP to 'pull up the drawbridge' and deny the effect of a changing world.

one of the things I often hear is "he only won becuase he adopted Tory policy"....but if that's the case; then for pitty sake why aren't the torys any ruddy good when there in power. This is the thing that no one can answer. YES, he may have taken the prinicples of a tory policy; but he crafted them and created then into some that actually worked !! best prime minister in my time, regardless of what is said here. I agree, Brown did screw things up...but brown was old school thinking.

The speech says clearly what New Labour stood for: hand out tax credits, hand out extra child benefit, extra maternaty pay,... It sounds easy to me just to hand out government money. It would have been an achievement is they had actually made government better, they just transformed it into an ATM for pressure groups.

This rhetoric usually comes for people who are doing difficult jobs for not much reward and are jealous of the benefit system as a result when they see other working class people not working as much and getting money. The solution is to improve pay and working conditions rather than be jealous.
@autofreak7
@autofreak7 Год назад
@@davecross4493 the solution is to lower taxes for working people, which off course is hampered by giving special interest tax credits since they cost money.

@TheRightHonRai
@TheRightHonRai 4 года назад
Andy Newham okay the deficit had been significant reduced under the major years. Blair continued to keep it down for the first 2 years of its premier and then it went back up and exploded in 2007.
@andynewham3352
@andynewham3352 4 года назад
Gagan, perhaps that had to do with the financial credit crisis which started in 2007, the U.K. already was supporting banks in 2007...... do you you not think? I can answer that for you if you wish. Credit lines throughout the world started to freeze, the U.K. as an economy that had pivoted more towards the financial services sector in the 80’s as a result of conservative government policy was on the high seas and open to a financial storm. The follow through one year later was banks collapsing throughout the world, unless of course the government stepped in, more government debt!
