I read is autobiography a few years back & he had a unique life, to say the least! Starting in poverty, to enlisting in the U.S. Navy at 17 in WWII (his shipmate & friend was Larry Storch), to 'rocketing' to movie stardom in his 20's, in the early 1950's, he had quite a career ! Even if exaggerated his sexual encounters, he was a phenomenon in Hollywood, with few equals!
Yes, that was quite an array of pictures on the very likable Tony Curtis. He was not conventionally handsome [his nose was too big for his thin face], but he had an all-round charm that was inescapable. You just couldn't help but like him. He was Mount Everest when it came to judging talent: He played in every genre of film that was ever conceivable and he always grabbed eyeballs and never let go. His first film appearance was with gorgeous Yvonne DeCarlo doing a dance sequence in the late 40's film "Criss Cross" for which Universal International received an avalanche of mail inquiring who the cute guy was. That film helped in his eventual big build-up.His name on the marquee was enough to draw in the serpentine queues. Was he a womanizer or victim? Lets say, it acted both ways. He did have an over-active libido, but, sadly, suffered from premature ejaculation. When one is young and girls throw themselves at you, one can only capitulate. And Tony was no different. On screen and off, there was all types of gorgeous women he came in contact with: Christine Kaufman, Virni Lisi, Suzanne Pleshette, Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Tate, Debbie Reynolds, Gina Lollobrigida [wow! what a beaut!], and Martha Hyer, to name a few. However, the most beautiful of them all was the angelic looking, Janet Leigh and what a peach she was. He married her and divorced her after 11 years. But, none of the other young women he wed were as beautiful as Janet, nor were they as prolific. She matched his career, movie for movie. They were considered Hollywood Royalty!!! Old time movie-goers still refer to them as "Tony and Janet" and they will forever be etched in our memories.
Yes! The "Wife Parade" - sure indicator of something existing deeply that is otherwise. Yes, similarly to Brando but contra-distinctively HE had the stones to admit it. Most admirable and a sure indicator of real inner strength plus settled sense-of-self. Brando called 'em as he saw and lived 'em. Curtis? Fill-in the blank . . . . . . . . . . .
Yeah I never cared for Curtis or his acting. He just always came across as a well...... a asshole. Although I have heard some funny stories about him, one actress ( who i cant recall who it was ) years ago told a story about her and Curtis was in some awful movie . Her and Curtis was sitting on the set and he leaned over and whispered to her " I wonder who the hell you to have to F_ck to get off this movie?" LOL.
Very likely so but hidden deeply within a very, very messy, misbegotten life. All those wives and kids! What kind of an attending father could he have been? It is a real pity that he could not come-to-grips with what he really needed-to. A not untypical story of way too many males made incapable of it : Deny -- Lie -- Die. Deeply tragic. That said (and so-necessarily) he produced some awfully fine roles, no question. THEY will serve as what we will remember and be so appreciative-of. This time you failed AOV !! Don't get cold feet.
