Tony has been sleeping rough in the United Kingdom for 25 years! He's gotten used to it!

Tony moved in with his uncle to be a caregiver. When his uncle died Tony tried to stay in that apartment, but was only given the option of a hostel. Tony has been homeless now for 25 years.
When I first met Tony he told me he liked being homeless. I asked him if it was always that way, because no one starts off liking living on the streets. People simply give up and adapt to sleeping rough. Tony responded that at first he did try and get off the streets, but after fighting the system, he just adapted to homelessness and made the best of it, including walking around Great Britain twice. As cool as that may be, the system failed Tony. No one should have to experience homelessness for even a short period of time.
Tony did confirm that police have started to move people on with the Olympics right around the corner. He said he used to have tea with them and now they bring sniffing dogs to roust rough sleepers.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Update on Tony - he was sleeping in a tent in the Hampton Court area in the winter of 19-20. Locals really took to him and helped him with food and bedding. Even found him a flat in Esher. He didn’t stay long though, as I guess it was a huge adjustment after 30 years. He was last heard of in Oxford.

If your name is not on the tenancy agreement they kick you out, Happened to me, my council house was in my wifes name(unbeknown to me) when she left me, the council were actually quite good, they gave me 6 months(in case she returned)then I was evicted. I then lived in a lorry that i bought cheap for a year, eventually rented a flat etc etc. But being single I was on the bottom of the housing list, until I hit 65, then I got a council flat and I am still there. I suppose at 65 you move into the vulnerable category, For over 20 yrs they didn't want to know, It was more luck than judgement that I didn't end up like Tony!

Working in homelessness in the uk it is absolutely true that single men, even with access to their children are bottom priority for housing, also being homeless is not a priority for housing at all, other barriers include not having a 'local connection ' if you dont have one you get nothing at all. If you are offered a hostel or something and for some reason it's not suitable so you decline most councils will then end your entitlement to help. Change these rules and it would solve a lot of problems. Facts. Beautiful fellow by the way, enjoyed listening. Thanks to Mark for his work, your a real inspiration Mark.

I'm supposed to go back to London next spring or early summer. After my Dad died unexpectedly earlier this year, I almost lost my mind. Our friends felt bad for me and wanted me to come stay with them in England. I went for a month (Super sweet elderly couple in their late 70s/early 80s). When I go back (maybe for good if I end up homeless here), I'd love to talk with some homeless people there to learn more, since these videos are so short. Of course I'll help the best I can depending on their needs. Older people always have great life stories and lessons, homeless or not. I hope Tony is still doing well. 😊

In my city there is a boom in empty shop and the homeless (white males living on the streets) Why can not some of these empty shops be convert into sheltered accomodation for the homeless. Why have empty shop buildings, with electric, running water, heating laying empty months on end, then a couple will be christmas shops for 4 or 5 weeks. They can convert them into student flats, housing hundreds of students from all around the world as university makes money from it, but student pay no council tax therefore the city makes sod all, but is a net drain as they still receive the services the city provides, subsidised by the rate payers. They can house migrants from all over the world, costing billions ,HS2 now over 100 billion, leaving the eu we must pay them 33 billion, 100 odd million tax deferred for flybe, plus they want another 100 million loan which if given, we will never get it back. 13 billion in foreign aid but that was not enough so they added another 400 million, all done in our name without even asking us. Whilst we have the homeless forced to defecate on the street, after sleeping in shop doorways reliant on charity to survive, and this is Britain in the 21st century. How can a country giveaway so much to others whilst abusing their own, sorry but something is seriously wrong with the system.
