I still remember when this happened.... kids at school were talking about it for a month. Wish I could go back. Late 90's/Early 00's was the best time ever.
@@hinglemccringleberry9389 while i would tend to SLIGHTLY agree given the stuff i see made for kids today and their experiences, but 99% of the time when someone says "i wish i could go back to this time" or "things were better when" "the best decade was this time" its literally just THEIR childhood years. and its usually viewed with HEAVY NOSTALGIA goggles, meaning you think it was better than it actually was. This is coming from someone born in 1990 and experienced all the same things and i agree our childhood generation was pretty lit, however if you go back and actually watch alot of the content and movies and shows made during that time, it DOES not hold up today. And most of the "classics" are just as cringy to watch as a 30 something year old now as you view the current generations content and media made for teens or young adults. one thing that CANNOT be argued, is the QUALITY and the QUANTITY of entertainment kids have today does NOT even compare to our childhood, they have it 100000x better. edit: just to be clear, THIS specific event was one of the greatest live sporting events of all time, so my criticism for the 90/00s era wasnt directed at this particular clip, i remember watching this live and like you said we were talking about it forever afterwards. just wanted to comment at the larger "our generation was the best" era comment.
People get married & babies are born every single day. There's only one time when someone does something for the very first time in the history, and this was Tony's. So yes, the greatest day of his life. Totally understand that!
At 5:32, I honestly believe that part of the reason this moment went so viral in its day and why it is so crucial to the history of modern day skateboarding, is the tangible elation on Tony's face AND all the faces of his competitors. Seeing that universal rejoicing, really clued people in that this was a big deal

This moment was like Goku turning Super Saiyan for the first time. Yes, the 900 doesn't have the same legendary status anymore and there are those who've surpassed it but this moment was the first and it gave birth to a legend to such a degree that those who know nothing of skating know the name Tony Hawk as the "skateboarding guy". A legend was born in this moment and will live on for as long as people have the desire to skate.

in a review of skateboarding in movies... tony himself said he wouldn'T have gone that far for the 900... he says, the crowd is wild, the crowd is the reason most pro skaters does it. they pick you up when you need it and when it comes down to it... you end up wanting to do it for them and not yourself. he said the crowd made him power through that moment. to see it in action though, you can actually see the moment he decided to do it whatever the cost.
The Tony Hawk foundation actually paid for the skate park in my town. Imagine how many kids tony hawk keeps off the streets and keeps them skating with his skate foundation. Truly a good human being
Watching this all the way through, what's most impressive to me that he took all those hard tumbles, but kept throwing himself back into it, never got discouraged. I don't know many people who could perform as well under such high expectations. The man embodies perseverance as much as skill, deserves to be called a legend.

Tony said in a podcast he didn't care about breaking something. Land or slam he was going for it. This was the best ramp he had been on to that point and he felt good. He also said on this ramp he saw the landing point for the first time instead of blindly putting the board on the wall.
I was a teenager and heavy into skating at this time. I remember watching it live on my little tube tv in my bedroom and losing my mind. Watching it now takes me back. What a moment in time for the skateboarding community. Tony will always be a legend.
The street skater in me is ashamed I dissed vert for so many years. Vert is gorgeous and this is PURE VERT! Balls out skating that no-one else can comprehend. I love Tony, he's a true inspiration.

This to me is the ultimate example as to why Tony Hawk is a legend. His fury, his skill, his relentless determination. He is to skating, what Elvis Presly is to music. The King.
I've never seen this full thing before, just the actual 900. The INTENSITY at 2:58 when he grabs his board and walks off even more determined, that was inspiring to see.
I remember the day watching this on TV. A buddy of mine was a real skate nut and managed to get tickets to this and watched in person. I only watched on TV to see if I could see my buddy on TV and record it for everyone here. Watching it and seeing him fail time after time, I thought HE AIN'T NEVER GONNA MAKE IT. At that time everybody thought that was just an impossibility, too difficult for a human to land. Then when he made it I was just STUNNED! Friends of mine were stunned and amazed. In retrospect I kind of wished I did go with him. An incredible day for skateboarding.
I've replied to several posts about this specific comment that Tony made, and I've always said that anyone can get married and have kids. It happens hundreds of times a day all over the world. But to do something for the first time ever in history, that's truly iconic. I side with Tony on that comment.

Best day isn't doing the 900, or having a wife and kid. Best day is doing the 900 with your wife, kid, and all your friends there, and having it all come together in one place at the same time, opening the door for letting you do what you love for the rest of your life.

Seth Seth True but this is really unique. Crazy shit happens in skateboarding and other extreme sports all the time. It's just unreal to think how THAT many people cared about this one thing. It's weird but really cool that for some reason people were that interested in seeing someone land a 900.
It's a ripple effect. I first learned about this guy trough games. Combined with the positive energy he emulates when I first saw him was more than enough to get me interested in to something I didn't care before at all. Heck I even tried to skateboard for a few years.
Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist, and those guys were Tony's competition and look how much they loved and wanted to see Tony land the 900. That's the definition of sportsmanship.
Legendary. It's always amazing to watch someone redefine what's possible. Tony Hawk IS skateboarding. He's in a league with Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, and Tiger Woods.
Yup. I remember watching it in my room and my dad not knowing I was already watching it called me into the living room to see it. He left it on the TV and I can still remember him sitting in his recliner and me standing there watching Tony land it live. Him landing that was crazy back in the day.
I still can’t believe I was actually alive to witness this live on TV when I was a kid. It is absolutely insane how revolutionary this moment was for the entirety of the skateboard community. Then on top of that the video game that came along with it. The game even helped merge two music communities (punk rock/rap) and helped us all discover new music in a new light. I was never into hip hop till Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 came out. For real tho this is an absolutely unreal moment in sports history. I still get goosebumps every time I come to revisit this video. And I’ve never skateboarded in my life lol
And not everyone had a camera in their pocket. They were all in the moment since there wasn't a distraction in their hands. If you had a camera you spent a lot for it and chances are someone behind you was angling to steal it.
I remember watching this on eXtreme tv. I was in 5th grade and it was like a montage I just couldn't belive it was real. Tony thank you for everything.
when he gets interviewed at the end, his first response is to say "if it weren't for you people, i would never've made that. thank you." i think that just sums him up perfectly. his first response isn't to big himself up, or even congratulate himself, it's to sincerely thank the crowd and fans first and foremost. just shows what an amazing guy he is

This guy is the undisputed GOAT in his sport. He is the Gretzky of Skateboarding. For you Americans’ who aren’t hockey fans (Canadian), Wayne scored more assists than anyone else had total points (goals and assists combined). On top of that, he scored the most goals ever. To be compared to someone like him makes you untouchable.

Michael M hes an excellent street skater compared to the average person but he’s not a competitive street skater because it’s not what he competed in. Most competitive street skaters aren’t any good at vert or freestyle. It’s like expecting a Usain bolt to also be the best at high jump.

At the 2:00 mark, you can see in his eyes that he wasn’t going to leave without accomplishing his goal and the intensity & focus continues to grow with each attempt. One of the greatest sports moments I’ve ever seen!! Tony Hawk = 🐐
Hell yeah, man I've felt like that before rolling away on something big when I skateboard, and obviously it was no where near this accomplishment. Everyone who has skated has had this "in the zone" moment when you feel like that trick is going to go down no matter what. It's amazing and why I still pick up a board every once in a while in my frail old age of 34.
