Who cares which one is better. They are both impressive and icons of their sport.

great explanation of physics on the no handed 900. he had to over rotate early then slow down the rotation by taking his hands off. this makes the no handed 900 very different and more technical then the normal 900. Matt Hoffman, brilliant!

Hoffman did it first back in the late 80's. Then ups it doing no handed!

For me it's both doing a 900 on a board is very impressive but equally as impressive is doing a 900 on those older bmx bikes that weighed like 35-40 pounds.

You ask us to choose? I won't, I can't both events make me tear up. I'm one of the anomalys that do both.

To be fair, Hoffman did the first 900 in a comp in 89, so you should of compared those two not the no hander vs straight 9. So Hoffman did do it way before Tony Hawk but props to both because the furthest I’ve spun is 450 and that’s on my bmx on a pyramid box.

Tony's 900 was much more epic to me.I still remember the feeling I had when he finally landed it after falling over and over. I'm a bmx guy all day long, but Tony's 900 is one of the top 20 greatest moments in all of sports.

@X Games, You could say Mat "The Condor" Hoffman did it better since Tony Hawk grabbed his board, and Hoffman took his hands off. But I think Tony Hawk's 900 was more epic since he was trying them off and on for 13 years before he made it, and Hoffman (after doing his first 900 in 1989 13 years before trying it no handed in 2002) simply just thought of a no handed 900 a couple months before. Not taking anything at all away from that, that's an insane trick, and I think harder than doing a 900 while grabbing on a skateboard, since there's allot of people who have made 900's in skateboarding within the last 20 years since Tony Hawk's first in 1999, but only one other person has ever done a no handed 900 in BMX and that is Steven McCann in 2011 also in BMX Vert and nobody else has made one since. And nobody in Skateboarding has ever done a no handed 900 air at all yet so far.

I always laugh at Steve Caballero in the crowd when Tony was trying the 900

Easier to get more speed on a bike and thus get more height and time to spin. Also easier to turn it since you have four points of contact and the bike is in between your legs so you have more control of the bike than a skateboard which is entirely underneath your feet. With BMX, Your hands and feet are controlling the bike to start and to finish. Skateboarding, it's no hands to start and to finish. Both are dope, but Tony's 9 is more impressive for those reasons. People say the No hands makes Hoffman's more impressive, but no hands in skateboarding is the norm and with Tony's 9, he still had to be hands off for parts of the trick. It's not like Hoffman did a no hands take off or landing. He let go for about half a rotation.

Both is cutting edge and legendary! I might be biased as a skater, but Tonys 900s seems one step beyond in terms of which one is more iconic.

Dont want to choose. I respect both these guys but nobody seems to be mentioning that Mats was a No Handed 900. And, not taking away from Tony, but his hand was down on the ramp when he landed his.

Looking at who’s broken more bones makes it pretty obvious which sport is more dangerous IE more impressive in my opinion. But that was Tony’s first 900 and I’d argue landing a completely new trick is better than adding a tuck into a current trick, but still 900 tricks are still rare today on BMX and he was doing them 20 years ago.

Mat all day he did it first then he added to it (admittedly like 13 years later) with the no hander and didn't put a foot down when riding away. Still love tony tho seems like a great dude

Matt's is better because he busted it out in secret and made it in one go. He had also done the 900 a while before, so he's ahead on this one. But obviously tony's trick is awesome too.

I've been bmx for over 30 years, and an unpleasant choice ... Because one idealized the trick (900) and the other dominated. But if you put the two on the track today and see who hits first, I'd say 100% sure Mat Hoffman.

In their respective sports Hoffman and Hawk are equals. No one innovated more than the two of them. In this I'd give Hoffman the edge. The ability to do variations within a 900 sets it apart.

As someone who's been skateboarding for 18 years but I avidly watch bmx videos, in terms of today's standards, the 900 on a skateboard is much much harder! You wont be seeing a 900 with a skateboard in a "bowl style park" contest. I've seen quite a few in bmx bowl contests.

how many years did it take to another person to land the same trick in a competition in both cases might show who had had more advanced trick at the time. Also Mat Hoffman is the GOD!

Hoffman but make 2 tricks 900 and no hands, but 900 , bmx make an old time .
