@ 6:20 Tony speaks to exactly what I was thinking throughout, Cameron's movie Titanic. "I'm not interested in a love story, I'm interested in the ship, those that designed and built it, the crew, the events of that night and the inquiries that followed."
The titanic story in general is just a pure and utter tragedy. Such a grand ship being built and sets sail on its maiden voyage only to be sunk by an iceberg. RIP everyone who died on that cold April night 107 years ago today. If capt. smith had not ignored those ice warnings and if ismay would not have pushed him to arrive a day early they would have made it safe and sound to New York.
If she had made it to New York in 1912, almost nobody today would know or even care that Titanic ever existed. Our society simply has a morbid fascination with tragedy and death. Anyway, to blame what happened on her captain is a little harsh... Titanic's captain didn't ignore ice warnings, he was experienced and simply wouldn't do that... he just assumed that anything large enough to fatally wound the ship would be spotted in plenty of time to navigate around it... which under normal circumstances was mostly true. There were just a series of very unfortunate circumstances that all came together at the right time which caused this to happen... first of all was that the officer whom had the keys to the cabinet where the binoculars were stored had left the ship with the keys still in his pocket- so the lookouts didn't have access to their binoculars... second was that there was a calm sea- no wind, so they couldn't see the waves breaking at the base of the iceberg, and third there was no moonlight which def made the bergs harder to see. We don't know that Ismay pushed Smith to arrive early, but we do know that sea Captain's were under enormous pressure to keep on schedule. Because of Titanic's water tight compartments, had second officer Murdock not ordered the ship to turn hard to port, had she hit the iceberg head on, the ship most likely wouldn't have sank- or at least she would have stayed afloat long enough to see everyone to safety... so it would almost be better that the lookouts had not seen the berg at all until it was too late to react. At this point in the year 2022, 110 years after this event occurred (as with any tragedy with this much loss of life) this tragedy has had even a far greater impact on society- you have to imagine the number of people who simply do not exist because of this one event... we are literally talking about MILLIONS of people who never existed... it is incalculable to figure out just how many lives never were because of this one night... you have to figure, if those 1500 folks each had three kids, then that is 4500 children, those 4500 children each had 3 kids, then just two generations later that is 13,500 people who never existed- keep multiplying that for 7 generations or so and the number is just mind boggling. Not to mention that it was common is those days for folks to have like 9-10 children or even more. There is just no way to accurately describe the cost of such an event... who knows if one of those people who never existed would have invented something that changed the world, or would have been a political leader that avoided a war, the possibilities are endless- which makes tragedy's like these even worse than most realize. When you think in those terms, imagine the true cost of the holocaust where 6 million people were murdered, it's unimaginable.

They were fitting a one-inch-thick steel ‘strap’ on the port and starboard sides of the ship ‘in way of no.6 boiler room and extending three frame spaces forward of the watertight bulkhead at the forward end of the boiler room.’ The strap extended from frame 63 to frame 81 at the landing of strakes J and K, at the ‘upper turn of the bilge.’ At this area, the hull frames were spaced thirty-six inches apart (the furthest distance between frames throughout the entire ship)." ...... "the Board of Trade decided to take the opportunity to examine Olympic when she was drydocked for the replacement of a port propeller blade. Accordingly, Carruthers made a detailed inspection and reported on 6 March 1912. The Board were concerned that there might be other signs of stress, beyond the specific riveted joints which they knew were being modified.Carruthers’ report allayed those fears: Below the waterline starboard side forward in way of no. 6 boiler room in the shell landing of J & K strakes from frame 63 to 74, about 160 rivets were slack and were drilled out and & renewed." I’ve always had a very strong interest in the TITANIC, probably because 1912 was the year also that my late father, Stafford Luck was born in HOOE, EAST SUSSEX, and the same year that my old company AEC (Associated Equipment Company) was founded in Walthamstow😇
To be factually fair, the Olympic was already the flagship of White star and the publicity was slightly more muted for Titanic as she was identical and the second one out. Yes, they can share the flagship honour. It's more the Tragedy of Titanic that made her infamous. Olympic was the only one of the three sisters (other, Brittanic) to have a full career, including war service till being scrapped in the 30's. She was the original and she was the success yet Titanic took the glory.
Titanic wasn't the flagship of the White Star line. She would have been had she finish her maiden voyage, but she wasn't. Her older twin, the RMS Olympic never lost the flag. Everyone always puts the Titanic first because she is the most famous of the three, especially since the wreck was found, but history tells a slightly different tale about how the people who lived back then view the ship of dreams.

People in Southampton still refuse to speak of the Titanic, almost every household was hit by this tragedy and the wound is still fresh even though it happened more than 100 years ago.
Hey 👋 no shade whatsoever but most of us either don’t know much about Titanic or are really proud of that part of Southampton’s history. There’s a great museum here on the Titanic called Sea City and various walks and stuff around the city to important Titanic locations, a memorial to the engineers in the park etc On the 100 year anniversary there was an amazing event in one of the parks. The ship was outlined on the floor to scale and speakers announced at various times what was happening during the sinking. It ran from 11:40pm to 2:20am. Hundreds of people were there - a really interesting event. Like I say, no shade at all, just my take as a person from Southampton 👍
Two main reasons. Firstly, the stern section was so comprehensively destroyed by implosions and other forces on the way down that there's barely anything recognisable about it. Secondly, because the damage to the stern was so catastrophic, the structure is too unsound to get in close, much less try to get an ROV inside - it's simply too dangerous.
I really dont think more life boats would have saved more. They didnt have enough time to launch all that they had and had to beg people to get in them and by the time they actually wanted in the boats a lot had left not full and they were running out of time.
In Roman times Juleas cease it was done for speeding how, they rode a mad cow alongside the chariot if the cow fell behind the scribe issued a speeding ticket. parking was as is today. A bloke in a top hat hid behind a wall and if the offending chariot was there too long they would nail a spike through the axle and charge the driver a whole sheep for its release
Did the romans have problems with their roads as well I found a roman wheel it was bent in those days instead of the nokia photo the roman peasant took the section of road to the courtroom and threatened to drop it on the judge if he didn,t tell the council how naughty they had been
What I found so sad about Cameron's movie is that there were hundred of interesting people and their fascinating stories why did he have to make up the inane story of Jack and Rose. Tony Robinson alludes tosome of them.
Probably because 1) many of those stories are still mired in mystery, speculation, and debate and 2) so that a few people as possible would be offended by the indepth portrayals of real people. Lots of folks are already offended by the movie's portrayals of the real people it featured, such as William Murdoch, Captain Edward Smith, and Joseph Bruce Ismay.
You know what’s odd about The titanic travesty? It happened in Mid April so it was spring time yet, those people that died in the water froze to death, one would think the waters would be warmer considering the time of year.
Russian technology has taken many world wide astronauts safely to the ISS since the shuttle program stopped. Obviously now space x have started taking them again from us soil but russian technology isn't all bad my friend.
