You can't make everyone happy. If his groove was perfect someone would say he's boring if he chops a lot someone will say he has no groove smh blah blah he could do whatever he wants on the kit whenever he wants I respect that. Play what you want Tony make yourself happy for the talent God and God alone gave you
When you've proven yourself as a pocket master, you can splurge on chops. Tony is MORE than able to stay in the pocket, so why not let him have some fun? Seems like the audience is enjoying it!
A good drummer can stay in pocket, a fit drummer can chop. A great drummer can express. Sorry, Tony's a boss at chops and is as tight as a metronome but he may as well be a computer. It sounds like a drum kit on a key board and someone's just holding down some of the buttons. It's all singles and fast ones
+Stephen Vumbaco there were here and there but they were only thrown in to give the illusion of continues doubles. Yeah I've got nothing against tony. Top guy and top of his league but it's people who then claim him to be god like at drums. He's not even close to the best at playing a lot but he's real damn good for big R and B concerts
+Gregor Wlliamson it is a solo man this is him expressing himself on his kit. Maybe he's not one of the greats in your eyes but there is denying his skill. The dynamics are there just nothing crazy like Benny ect. Ect. There's always stuff that's harder to get for some drummers. Maybe it's dynamics for him. He's good at what he's good at and I've heard a couple great drummers say " get it where you fit in" and he does.
it's kind of sad and pathetic that people have to find something to complain about and put him down for. like there must be a flaw to pick apart. I never post 'you're jealous, where's your skill' type posts but I think it applies in this case. the 'no groove, all chops' bullshit posts are just from sad, jealous and maybe slightly bitter people realizing they'll never come close to a quarter of his ability. why the fuck MUST there be groove in this or any solo??
the are 2 types of drummers who go on RU-vid....the guys that wanna be educated and inspired by great players and the other guys that wanna prove that their musical opinion is more knowledgeable than someone elses....pretty sad that I'm seeing more critics than artists and musicians around these necks....

TRJ is one of the best drummers on the planet. hands down. he was great at 12. people finding things to complain about couldn't hope to be at this level at his age, because they're too busy finding excuses.
(All the haters in the comments logic)"Hey Tony Royster Jr. !! Holy Shit I love this guy!""Hey, Tony!!"Tony Royster Jr. - "Hey whats up?"Haters - "Nothing..HEY can you do a solo for us!?!? You know...show off your skills!"Royster - "OK, Yea sure why not!"*Does amazing Jaw-Dropping Solo*Haters - "OMG STOP SHOWING OFF! You have no Rhythm or Sense of Music and your style is terrible and I hate your electronic pads and I hate your shoes you wear and the way you breath....fuckin....all chops-no feel bastard!"LOL I hope I got my point across....You CANNOT EVER be good enough...people will always find flaws in something you do...and SADLY the better you get makes no difference because they better you are the harder the look for flaws...its sadly part of human nature when seeing someone or something that intimidates you or makes you feel jealous...I hate people...

When the audience starts clapping at 6:45 tony actually starts challenging himself to play to a different rhythm than the audience is clapping, 1 because he likes a challenge and 2 because I believe he doesn't like the audience clapping because its not appropriate for a drum solo lol
+Stephen Vumbaco half , I'm just saying that everything happens for a reason. and i know some of the drummer who also says that he is lack of soul / spirit. For me, I'd rather watch steve gadd
+fran991213 that's music though. You don't have to like the guy but the FACT is that he has a crazy amount of talent. His odd timing and pocket is amazing when he doesn't play he's still on time... Right around 8 min he shows that. Personal preference is what makes us human not everyone is going to like him and that's okay but he's still crazy good and will most likely go down in history as a drum legend. Whether you agree with that or not is up to your musical bias.
Any who complains or says "he isnt playing music" , please PLEASE PLEASE upload a video and play better. Haters. He is literally WORKING AS A FULLLLLLLLLLLLL TIME DRUMMER. while u guys are on youtube looking at cheat codes for CALL OF DUTY, he is literally practicing on drums. And for those who think this isnt music, please check his credentials and see how may artists this dude has played for......popular and not popular artists. Im done. Love u guys in Jesus name
Everyone's entitled to an opinion right? I gotta echoe nycjin816's words somewhat. Its very easy to sit back and analyze, search for cracks in the foundation, split hairs, search for any and every flaw of an individual that is beast mode in any field if you yourself aren't at that level. It seems to come natural to those looking in to critique someone at the level of say, a Tony Royster who by the way, is on another level like it or not. This is a world class drummer, & at this point I suppose he has nothing to prove; he is in his early 30's & still evolving. You can pick a flaw out of any top player but it doesn't change the game. When you mention Dave Weckl's name, you get arguments from both sides of the sphere ( killer drummer vs no feel, stiff time ) but there is no doubt he has achieved legendary status & he has already gone down in history as 1 of the greatest drummers of all time. He also said something that may provoke thought: MD 1998- "Some use the whole 'I don't need technique' thing as an excuse not to work at their craft". So I'll add to that if I may : If you can't play a complex part then you rip the next dude that can. Don't just play but practice & study your art form. Music to me is not chops for the sake of 'look at me' moments. Its about one's feel, mood, interpretation, creativity, soul, fire and dare I say 'pocket' as Mintah stated.
As always - great drummer, but in this conversation with public using drums he is completely rambling. When listening this - there is a feeling like he wanna say something, but he not sure what exactly he want to say.
i love how people argue on here saying who's better or what not you should be busy practicing and using youtube to improve your drumming or you should be watching you tube after your daily practice routine or like me after i have prepared charts for my students and done my practice routine
+doctork 21 You can't make everyone happy. If his groove was perfect someone would say he's boring if he chops a lot someone will say he has no groove smh blah blah he could do whatever he wants on the kit whenever he wants and I respect that
@@TheOneYoungKing you may not believe me I can play Drums but if I wanted to I could teacher people drums but then it would be illegal & against the law, because teaching by ear would break the secret control of society & the new world order bro.
@@TheOneYoungKing just look at what happened to Brandon Lee when he got shoot by a man with a gun which Jerry Harrison now sing's young man old man with a gun two people in love from the 80's sad but ☹️true☹️ Bruce Lee gone at 32☹️ year☹️ old😢...
looked like he was having some technical difficulties that threw him off a bit but there's no one on here who could do what he did. he's still one of the best out there.
You honestly believe no one can do what he does? Seriously? None of this is impossible. Hell most of it is pretty fucking underwhelming, especially for him. I like Tony. This solo was fucking boring.
+Rob Pierce Youre making these claims on a drumming video. A video that will be watched by many drummers. To assume no one commenting could do something similar is ignorant as fuck. Ive been drumming for 30+ years. There is not a single segment of this solo that was up to Tony's typical level. Im also not insecure enough to be baited into recording a video to seek your approval. This solo just straight up wasnt what I would expect from him. Period.
+Eric Jennings I was being optimistic on Tony's behalf. LIKE I SAID it was because of all the negative comments! I didn't expect someone to troll me over it and blow what I typed out of proportion. I'm sure you have much better things to do than argue over a stupid video....? no?
I could help u with some grooves but I live in 🇦🇺Australia🇦🇺 so my guess is your from the 🇺🇲USA🇺🇲 somewhere we all wish & Dream of to be one day in our untold life, but sometimes can lead to bad thing's in life also can turn on U, ✌️Peace☮️ Bro🏳️...
he seems to be doing more experimenting and PLAYING :) here than a lot of his other solos, which often seem like a series of licks and exercises he's put together to impress drummers
Drumming is an amazing talent to have, as is anyone who can play an instrument..I'm an average drummer, but i love playing and learning and progressing. Watching guys like Tony just spark that energy to want to play and get better. Just love the craft that these people have, don't hate don't judge, just enjoy. If you are true lover of drumming and drummers, then that's exactly what these video's will do for you.
Yeh Drumming is very much fun, but I mostly just help my mum & niece to get good at Drums, but open mic has so many people who get Angry & want to become good at everything as well. The only way they will get good at anything U do weather it's drumming playing video games or drawing on paint in windows XP & windows 7 or making music in MTV from ripped cds. Is to love what U do even fixing computer's. So if U keep doing what U love & have passion for. Nothing can stop U from Real Gifts & Talent's...
very happy to see all his drumming video when he was a kid, till now 2015, good to see this man not giving up playing drums, but keep on enjoying and improving
insanely talented guy but seems like he lost the rythm a few times due to a bit of showing off. sounds experimental and has a nice groove sometimes, any recommendations? any cool pieces/videos of him ?
I have but I didn't do it showing off reasons & I'm really sorry if people think that way of me co'z I'm not the bad guy like Jet Li from Leath weapon 4?. I think I did to much for RU-vid & wasted my life away thinking people didn't need my help but I understand life much better now D****l R**K on RU-vid it's not a Joke ether & Mega. Station & .ejay to the max. & MTV music history & old school website on youtube, & fruity pie on RU-vid it might still work if RU-vid didn't already delet it from RU-vid in reply to Drummer boy🤔?🤔?🤔...
But all well doesn't really matter these days I still Drum Very much & I'm very Thankful that I can still be alive to play I feel Sorry for ☹️Neil 😢Pete ☹️ Neil Peart?...
I love Tony Royster as much as the next guy but this was a pretty bad performance. Lot's of attempting to develop something and immediately abandoning it. Lots of losing his own internal time. He is physically in great shape but his musicality was not present. I don't see the Tony Royster Jr who is calibrated(precise) and in control of his limbs and musical direction. It's clear he was not in a good headspace to be creating or just hadn't been playing much. I feel for him-cringeworthy. That being said, check out this video of him that changed my life and has inspired me for 15 years. This is the Tony Royster Jr. I know. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vAlBORA7Fe0.html&list=PLbZKQQGH-GIuAvGa0rNyEinpHOyM0K3PX&index=28
Ur "judging" him in two completely different context, one was on a track with a band, with also a different sound drums. Here he is soloing, chill atmosphere, more quiet with different drums sounds
+manb4war I think the sound it's kind of weird because he hits way too hard the drums! haha it's the well known emotions that emerge playing drums (Every drummer knows it), and that's why he uses black heads I guess!
