Tony Schiavone is such an amazing guy. one of my favorite voices to hear on commentary. I didn't discover Tony until he got to AEW and i'm glad i can say I'm a fan of him. You can see how humble he is
For Tony to say he's the product of nostalgia is completely undermining the effort he's put in to help make AEW what it is today. I grew up during the Monday Night Wars (I'm 32 now) and I was never a fan of WCW or Tony. My first real introduction to Tony was via AEW, and I think he's absolutely killed it at his job. He's definitely a part of why AEW is AEW and why they're so god damn good, apart from the work that's being done in-ring. He's humble to the point of annoyance! 😂 Much love Tony!
You're completely right. I got into wrestling after WCW was gone, and then fell out of it some years later. AEW pulled me back but I was confused by all the hype and love for Tony because I'd never experienced his commentary. Speaking as someone who has no nostalgia for him, I instantly saw what a great talent he is.
I was not a huge Tony fan during the Monday Night Wars for one simple reason- he was always talking about NWO during every match. No matter what and I just hated listening to it. I have a better appreciation for him now as an adult
AEW just seems like an authentic company full of authentic people. Everyone is so humble from the youngest to the oldest and it makes you really want to buy into the product, I couldn’t ask more from this company right now whether I believe every storyline is great or not
I love Tony, he was along with JR were the voices of my childhood and I was hoping from the beginning that Tony was going to be involved with aew and I'm very glad he wound up with AEW.
When he debuted on the first Dynamite, I marked out so hard lol. JR and Tony together is good commentary, and nostalgia rolled into a perfect ball. Couldn't ask for a better commentary honestly.
I love Tony. Just for the record, Dave Meltzer never called Tony 'the worst announcer in 1999 & 2000' - the fans did. In the year end awards for those years in the Observer newsletter, voted for by the fans. Tony won the award in the 'Worst Announcer' category. In 2019's Observer awards, Tony was 3rd in the 'Best Announcer' category in the same Observer newsletter awards, for his work in AEW.
Tony IS humble, sure, but it seems he doesn't understand how great he is. I wayched WCW from 97 to the end of 99 and thought he was fantastic. In terms of announcers right now, Tony is the #1 BEST, by a landslide. His commentary, his wit, quickness, sense of humor is just as good as anyone's else. Tony shines with his personality, as an interviewer and as a pure babyface company rep. JR used to be like this during the Steve Austin era, and was an integral talent as interviewer, etc and beloved by the fans. Now Tony is filling this same multi-purpose role. He is just fantastic, has such good instincts, and the fans LOVE him. He is probably as big of a babyface as anyone on the roster. Especially with his role in AEW right now, his name OBJECTIVELY needs to be in the top 5 of all time conversation! Tony, don't sell yourself short asshole :P
@@samsundar7408 Tony is the best announcer, Jericho is the best colour commentary (followed closely by Kingston) and Excalibur is the best play by play. Give it a few years and the this'll be the team we are listening to every week
Schiavone was my guy in the announcers booth back in 1990. He still is today. Your maturity adds a hell of a lot to matches/angles youve got an excellent perspective and understand the link between old and new. Adaptation. If excalibur is new school, JR is old school, Tonys a fantastic link man between these worlds.
Tony is way to humble and laid back. He gives way too much cred to JR. Lets be honest JR not the same anymore and Tony still has it. During the lockdown Tony and Jericho were by far the best announcers I have ever heard on AEW or in current wrestling. Those 2 should be on the A team with Excalibur and Taz on the B side. Tony you're the best and pls stop bad mouthing WCW. Crap, we get it but you were part of one of the best times of wrestling
jr has been really good and excalibur is amazing chris jericho is annoying as fuck idk how you can consider jericho or tony ever being better than excalibur lmao
Tony, this isn't a dig at any other announcer because there have been some really good ones. But you were my guy as far as an announcer goes. You, Tenay and Heenan were my childhood and when I think of my fond WCW memories, you were always involved with them. You had to get the product over to us the consumer(s), and even in the dying days of WCW you still did it. You did it so well, wrestling on Mondays kept me out of trouble and kept me doing well in school at the time because if I did bad in school or got in fights or whatever that meant no Monday Nitro, and I made sure I never messed that up. I am sure I am not unique with this story and you did a lot more for the youth at the time and good for people than you give yourself credit for. It's why you are so adored now. The AEW fanbase is mainly made up of people that were kids/teens during WCW. You are the best, in my eyes, there has ever been. Thank you.
1) Jim Ross 2) Everyone Tony Schiavone grew up watching/got to work with 3) Tony Schiavone That is some super humility. Tony is actually pretty darn good as an announcer. I love that he's open to the product he's commentating on, too.
The fact that Tony knew that Sting was going to debut that night proves that he is one of the greatest annoucers of all time, he sounded as surprised as us !!
Tony needs to just announce with Excalibur. He could shine even more than he already is. This dude is amazing. From the podcasts to the commentary. And his humility is unparalleled.
Tony’s really endeared himself to wrestling fans all over again. I didn’t really watch WCW but of course knew Schiavone, and his voice. But now that he’s getting a fresh start someplace new, I’m realizing just how naturally gifted he is at this. And what a cool guy.
We love you Tony! We appreciate you sitting down, getting all this off your chest and bringing us your awesome mind! Thanks for letting us know how much you care because we all care about you and your fam and the amazing product that is AEW!
I think I understand what Tony means when he brings up nostalgia, but thats an unavoidable feeling for all parties. Nostalgia doesnt last that long, and it's been 2 years already and I hope that Tony continues being apart of AEW, especially at commentary. He doesnt just make people feel nostalgic, he helps make the product feel authentic and meaningful. Absolut.
tony putting his current run down to nostalgia is kind of sad. i hope he realizes that he is great at what he does alongside being beloved by people who remember him.
I was 4 years old when WCW finished so I never heard of Tony until I heard from AEW and I could definitely say that alongside Excalibur, I discovered 2 of the greatest commentators I've seen, so I don't care if Tony feels his work in WCW was not good or he thinks he is only in AEW for nostalgic reasons, that does not apply to me. So for me Tony will always be an essential part of AEW and Wrestling in general from the minute I heard him! Much respect Tony!
Tony, I dunno if you’ll ever read this but FOR REAL you and Jericho on commentary totally were/are the modern day Bobby the Brain / Gorilla Monsoon. You guys work tremendously well together
Another great podcast from AEW. Jim Ross wrote two great Autobiographies. I really think Tony should write a book too Tony's much better off career-wise in AEW than WWE.
Sadly I was able to watch Gorilla Monsoon during his run as Raw GM and his last run as a judge in that Brawl for All with Butterbean (Vince McMahon and Russo not thinking straight even back then).
What a great interview! Tony S and Jim Ross on commentary is like a hybrid of my childhood wrestling shows and I love it. I believe AEW has the best commentary team beginning with Jim, Tony, Excalibur, Taz and Jericho.
Tony... you’re a legend! You’re the JR of AEW which is quite something considering AEW actually has JR. Keep up the good work n keep destroying trolls with “mom” lines.
I always liked tony, but I learned a lot more about him in this, and now have a greater appreciation for him. Can someone at tnt tell him he's loved? I feel like he should hear that more often.
A) I love Aubrey. She's is just total awesomeness. I wanna give her a big hug lol B) Tony: I'm a couple years younger than you, so I remember guys like Gordon Solie doing Georgia Champioship Wrestling on WTBS-17 out of Atlanta...or Gorilla Monsoon doing commentary of taped matches for WWF on the weekends on WWOR-9 out of Secaucus, NJ. You, sir, are one hell of a commentator. And you're right, so is Jim Ross. But, I admire your humility...as well as your candidnesss. But when I first tuned into AEW to watch and I saw you and JR there are the table, literally the first words I said were "Oh f***! That is so f***ing cool!" It was like seeing the pro wrestling dream team of commentary there. Now, it's one of the many super things that I love about AEW. And the fact that I hear you guys plus the talent talk about how good Tony Khan is to you all, I am glad you're all there and working for him. And I hope as soon as this whole COViD thing is over, that you and the rest of AEW get out and earn all the respect and admiration that you all deserve from people all over the world. God bless, man.
Thanks to Tony, Surge Energy Drink had a "surge'" in sales. 😅 I felt for him in the late 90s WCW, but Tony in Crockett and early WCW was Th Man announcing.
I use to watch WCW & WWE and I like #AEW so much better than both WCW & WWE. I'm glad #AEW is a thing and hope that it's here 4-life. And Tony is such a great announcer. I am glad he is with #AEW #AEWDynamite #AEWonTNT #AEWDark.
