This clip combined her 1st attempt of the free skate, her re-skate, and the post-skate interview.
Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Winter Olympic Games, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Tonya Harding of the United States had skate lace problems when her original laces broke during the 6-minute warm up. Her team did not have a proper spare lace for this kind of an emergency and ended up using whatever they could find, which apparently was not long enough for her to properly tie her skate properly. In order to avoid being disqualified for not getting into her starting position within the 2 minutes after they announced her name, she would rush out ill prepared and started her routine. She would bail out of the opening triple Lutz and then go to the referee to show the referee her problem. She would be allowed time to fix her lace problem. It seemed that Tonya expected only a small break to change her lace and then go back out to skate, but the announcer came on and announced that she would be allowed to re-skate at the end of the group and immediately called out Josee Chouinard of Canada to skate.
Tonya would have her re-skate and would perform well enough to place 6th in the Free Skate. She would move up from 10th Place to finish in 8th Place overall. An interview with Tonya follows.

I'm your 1000th like. I saw 999 and had to act. Ha ha. But yeah, from what I have seen, the movie was not trying to paint Tonya as anything other than a human being. Not like say a Nancy made for TV movie which makes her out to be a princess victim. But yeah, its great how close the movie tried to be to reality. Wish more films did it this way.

@@BlueJWay999 Internet was around but few used it other than to send e-mails and download the odd low-res gif. In the modem days connection speeds were slow and for most people it was still a lot more convenient to get their info by tv or papers. Back in 1994 internet was a novelty mostly for "tech-geeks" and businessmen who liked to stay updated on stocks and what-have-you, were actively using. As for being "cancelled". It might very well have been the opposite. Media back then was (fairly) objective. At least professional (don't know if Fox News was around then though, for they certainly never were). Today any popular internet clown can spread their version of "news" and anything goes and passes for the "truth" . Today liars pull the "I was bullied at school" card to garner sympathy while the real victims are roundly ignored. Toxic and downright stupid "influencers" (who the h*ll do they influence anyhow?) have hordes of sympathizers even though concrete evidence proves their vile nature. Had Tonya Harding had access to Twitter or TikTok or whatever she could have said:"I am a victim of my abusive husband." "My mother beat me every day." "My dad abandoned me when I was 8." and she would have had TONS of supporters. Heck, a lot of people sided with her even back then and believed she was utterly innocent while her partner and his shady friends orchestrated it all. Internet became a great tool for the astute and those seeking knowledge. It also gave idiots a voice to echo around the world.

Over-rotated on the triple loop. Failed to do the triple axle and instead did a single axle. Hit the triple Lutz. Obvious fatigue in the total program. Tonya was headed for greatness at one time. Was one of the most athletic ice skaters ever. Her skating weakness was in artistry. Her personal life was in utter chaos. She added to her own personal disasters as we sometimes all do. Her husband was a self-absorbed, self-interested character who was so toxic to Tonya's career and personal life. She was so young. Not making phony allowances for her but there were terrible immoral and criminal forces in her life that churned her into the midst of continual storms and upheavals. Yes, she played a role in most of it. But Tonya was never beyond redemption. She deserved the chance to skate again. Sad she was never given that chance. Tonya comes across hard and rough in her demeanor and presentation but I don't believe that facade. It is a defense mechanism to protect her mind and heart. She had been harmed so much in her growing up years and then in her first marriage. She has tears and fears just like most of us do. We all need to be loved and forgiven; and also given credit for our accomplishments and healthy encouragement to keep achieving. And when we fail and fall to be assured we are not loved any less because of our failures.

Nancy was the favorite of the US skating federation the media and public (Although she behaved terribly towards Oksana who was a child and cried with happiness) Nancy had designer dresses. Tonya had to sew the costumes herself or her mother had done it before. After all, the federation should sponsor the skates and costumes of its athletes, but they did not help Tonya financially at all.

I havent watched this video in a long time. Hard to believe this was 26 years ago. In spite of all the drama around the whole Nancy/Tanya thing and then all the drama around the first attempt at the free skate shown here, there is no denying 2 things: Tanya Harding was THE best jumper in the world in this sport in 1994, and the second attempt at the free skate was a super gutsy performance. No big surprise she bailed out of the triple axel. Super hard jump, especially under these conditions and a super hard landing when she still did not have 100% confidence in the stability of that skate. Most people would not have attempted that at that moment early in the program. But aside from that, her jumps are awesome in this program, she landed all of them abeit a little over-rotated on a couple of them and kind of 2 footed the triple loop...but still landed 4 triples in this program. Moves in the field and footwork were not terrible, solid spins...no doubt a terrific performance under VERY difficult circumstances. Amazing skater. The skater who got screwed the most in this whole episode was Josee Chouinard from Canada. She was Canada's national champion in 94 and a really terrific skater. To get called to the ice early during a competition is a very difficult situation. In reality, I have never seen it happen at any level of competition. The order is the order and you prepare with your coach based on that order and based on when you will be on the ice. To do it at the Olympics was a bad call by the referee in my opinion. Skating is probably 40% physical and 60% mental. The early call had to totally kill the mental game. If I were a judge, I do think I would have given Tanya a set amount of time to fix her equipment but I would not have changed the order.

She didn't just "claim" her blade was loose - it WAS loose - when she puts her foot up on the judge's bench you can actually see it wobbling. It was quite common for Tonya to break laces and even snap blades, her jumps were that powerful. @TheWayWithKhuwayne
@TheWayWithKhuwayne Год назад
Given her economic class situation, it wouldn't surprise me if she had either a blade problem with one of her skating boots and didn't have the money to replace it and therefore couldn't bring a 2nd pair. Plus, from what I understand, skaters typically like to get comfortable with one pair of skates and stay in it so that there isn't any risks on the day, week or even month of the competition to prevent.
@bexlo9794
@bexlo9794 6 месяцев назад
Because you typically skate with the boot you are using for practice. Skaters don't switch out boots that readily. Some skaters have one boot set for the short and one for the long, but there is no way that switching boots would have helped her here. It takes months to prep a pair of skates.

The Woman Announcer continually contradicts herself saying "Its so important that its comfortable on your foot" but said if that happened to her before a Competition she NEVER would re-tie the laces, she would just "get used to it". Then she says in the same breath following, "that if there's any change in the comfort, laces are too tight, feet fall asleep but everything has to be PERFECT ESPECIALLY in Olympic Competition. Huh?! So which is it? If things have to be "just perfect", then shouldn't Tonya stop & retie her Skate? There was a few, "Things like this JUST DON'T HAPPEN" ... (but apparently they did & do according to her ability to "just get used to it".) "Things like this are rare in Skating ... it just DOESN'T HAPPEN but it's happened to Tonay 4 times.". Then she blabs on about "The Rules". Clearly Tonya WAS following the Rules reporting the problem. Then it "wasn't fair" to Jose, the next Skater. "Things like this could throw her WAY OFF". She clearly couldn't resist throwing shade on Tonya and couldn't help herself with her continual, non stop contradicting commentary. Terrible, unfair & judgmental Commentating

Even though she downgraded her triple axle to a single with a minor step out on her loop, the rest of the performance was descent for her standards, hence the smile in the end. The woman pushes herself too much she ends up making major falls that causes deeper disappointments when a clean skate without the triple axle can make a huge difference to her.
