Surely an amazing feat, congrats! Nick was clearly climbing at his limit, thought, and I have the feeling that involved way too much risk of fatal or very serious injury.
@danielwinsor6018
@danielwinsor6018 5 лет назад
And yet, he climbed with more composure and much faster than every other ascent before him... and I think that's what's really interesting about Nick. Might seem foolish at a glance, but I just see a climber cruising a route far within his comfort zone. We haven't seen his limits yet.
@danielwinsor6018
@danielwinsor6018 5 лет назад
@drew13600 Ha, fair enough. But even the fall he took in stride. It was on his terms, he wasn't hesitant or scared... he just hopped on down and wasn't rattled by it.

I almost can't believe those pads are enough to keep you safe for a fall that big. Well done, this is an impressive feat.
@danielwinsor6018
@danielwinsor6018 5 лет назад
They'll keep you reasonably safe for the first half of the route (maybe up to 35 feet for someone as bouncy as Nick), which for him was long enough to get out of the toughest/most insecure moves. It's a free solo for the last 15-20 feet though!

@French Frys A fall from the top of the boulder carries about a 55-70% chance of fatality. Terrifying, but far from absolute.

Eh, fits the definition of a highball exactly
@Alex76182
@Alex76182 5 лет назад
@@YoureInSilico : I dont think so. Here one of many definitions (some even say 15-20 ft): "The upper limit is somewhere around 25 or 35 feet in height; above that the argument can be made that it is a free-solo climbing route, although the line is blurred between boulder problem and route." Too Big to Flail is 55 feet, and it is most popular as a toprope problem.
@barney2747
@barney2747 5 лет назад
@@Alex76182 Eh, many highballs are most popular as top-rope problems. A climb with 27 pads (or pads at all, for that matter) can't really be called a solo. Not to take anything away from this problem though, pads or not it's extremely serious.

Has anyone calculated the maximum height before the climber reaches a fall-impact they will not be able to walk away from?
@danielwinsor6018
@danielwinsor6018 5 лет назад
The general rule of thumb around Bishop is with a flat, padded landing at 25 ft, you're flirting with a broken limb. That being said, knowing how to land can float that limit up to 30/35 ft, but people have also broken legs from five feet up... Lol. It really all depends on too many factors to put a solid number on it.

This is not bouldering, it is free solo-ing
@TaylorWashburn
@TaylorWashburn 5 лет назад
“Most people say you should climb 3 grades harder than you solo, but I’ve only climbed a couple v12’s”...basically, “according to the majority of the climbing community I am not at a level where I can do this solo safely”...this is definitely the type of mindset that gets free soloers killed. It is also setting a horrible example for the younger generation of climbers

@danielwinsor6018
@danielwinsor6018 5 лет назад
I would argue it would turn one of the world's most iconic highball boulders into a fairly pedestrian sport route. The ethic in Bishop has always been 'bold, not bolts.' Nothing wrong with bolts, obviously, but there's plenty of safely bolted 5.13d's out there. There's only one Too Big to Flail.
