Honesty, they got their money's worth with 300k miles on it. My old boss had a fleet of Ford Transits and F150s. He begged his employees to alert him the moment something doesn't feel right or a dummy light came on. He took care of them and a few of his Transits and F150s lasted around 500k.

Good call. Run it until it dies. Many older folks spent a lot of years driving before ABS. It's a great function but not strictly needed.

Here's the thing, some models have versions with ABS and some without. The brakes work exactly the same if an ABS equipped car has the ABS disabled so it's complete crap that if it came with it, it must be working. Seat belts, turn indicators, windscreen, wipers, etc. YES, they must work but if your passenger mirror isn't there anymore and you have a rear window you can see through and side windows, like a Civic, it's fine and on some cars, a passenger side mirror is an option. Stupid I know but it is an option on some.

Drive it till it dies is my motto. I never buy new cars. I have a $5000 limit and I drive them as long as I can. The car I'm drive now is a 2001 PT Cruiser with about 200,000 miles. I've been driving it for 15+ years. I will be replacing it in the next few months because of rust/rot and repairs not worth fixing. I'll be sticking to my limit and motto on my next purchase as well... lol

Same here. With the exception of my most recent car, I've never spent more than $1000 on a car. My most recent purchase was last year; $3400 for a 2003 Lexus in near mint condition with 150K miles. I stole it for that price! I spent $2000 on maintenance, and I'm confident it will last another 150K without any major issues. Even with the money I put into it, it's actually worth more than what I paid. I'm driving it till it dies, or the body starts rusting through.

This has been my method with cars for 30 years. Usually buy a broken low mile car for a grand or two. Throw a little money at it to fix and do all maintenance drive it until its not worth fixing anymore. A life of payments for the lifetime of a car and full coverage insurance is poor life planning.

I happen to own this same year model but it’s just a XT. My employer has several HD truck dealerships and a couple of years ago he closed one of them. It had a couple of high mileage F150s (300K+) and this Transit that were used for parts deliveries. I bought it with it only having 167,000 highway miles and it’s been a nice little van so far. Engine is clean as a whistle and no oil leaks.

I've always liked tooling around town in one of these and it did ok on the occasional 100+ mile delivery, great on gas. Being a 2013 and I didn't arrive til 2017, it was neglected and had a few issues. Regarding the Transit-150 van, I hated those, no foot room at all

A study found that ABS alone actually increases the risk for the occupants of the car, as it is more likely to roll over. Still, think twice about driving a car with faulty ABS, as at least some have ABS based brake force distribution, thus may experience reduced stability for soft braking on slippery roads if the ABS is faulty. If it's a sensor fault, it may resort to a safe mode where you get unexpected ABS BRRRRT action even with good grip.

02 Falcon, the ABS light stuck on. Early mornings when cold, a slow drive and stop will cause the front right wheel to lock up and shudder and pull to right. After about 10 minutes, light stays on but brakes fine then. Been told might be a bent push rod on the booster ? But what do I know - I have no idea.
@JeffDeWitt
@JeffDeWitt 2 года назад
@@wonniewarrior It might be the sensor. When my ABS was acting up my first stop after starting up the car would shudder as the ABS tried to work, then the light would come on and the brakes work normally. I REALLY doubt your problem is a bent booster push rod, that would affect ALL the brakes and the problem wouldn't clear up after 10 minutes.
@joevignolor4u949

@@joevignolor4u949 That's the nature of no ABS brakes. When the ABS was acting up on my regular car at first I was concerned, but then I realized that as the car has four wheel disks it still had better brakes than any other car I've owned, none of which had ABS. I drive my 25 year old Jeep XJ fairly often and of course it doesn't have ABS... that's just the nature of older cars.

I had a '92 Honda Accord that my anti-lock brakes went out associated with a huge ice and snow storm. Driving around on ice triggered my anti-lock brakes to activate very often, wearing them out. The car later broke down for other reasons, leading to its disposal.

In the states, do you not have a road worthy inspection? Here in New Zealand we have two types - Warrant of Fitness (WoF, for private cars) - Currant of Fitness (for all commercial vehicles). Without too much detail, there's different time periods for age of vehicle. But in the case of this van, it would be bound to a 6 monthly inspection, and if an inspector saw ABS/TCS lights on they would stop the inspection and order the system be fixed before being returned for inspection. Some inspectors may go as far as to order the vehicle off the road until fixed. If you are caught (by police) driving said vehicle with a non-drive order on it, it is a NZD$200 fine and vehicle possibly impounded for 28days. Should your registration run out while your WoF/CoF has expired, then it can not be renewed until your WoF/CoF is re-issued.

Some states have inspections other states don't. I live in Illinois, a state which luckily has not issued a state wide inspection requirement(not sure about certain cities in the state). I am glad they haven't done it yet because my family can't afford to fix everything an inspection would require nor can we afford to just replace our vehicles that would fail one as doing so would but us so far in debt we would never get out. We have 4 vehicles we regularly drive and only one of which would pass because it was just bought in order to replace one that became unsafe to drive by anyone's standard(the frame rails on both sides broke).

An insurance company will total a vehicle if repair exceeds vehicle value. Its a sound financial policy. Theres a line in an old country song, "Sell your truck while it still runs."

I bet there are some service techs who wouldn’t mind a few minutes in a locked room with the Ford engineers who decided that was a good mounting location for the ABS pump. On vehicles I’ve owned over the last 45 years or so, it has always been the braking systems which have most frequently required service. Engineering lesson: put stuff needing fixing where it can be fixed. Drive it til the wheels fall off is the right choice for this van.

My mom’s Suburban also had an ABS light come on and battery die at night but that’s because after getting out the car and shutting it off the pump would stay running afterwards. She ultimately decided not to replace it parts and labor all together would’ve cost $2K+ and this was an ‘01 Burban definitely not worth it.

Kinda sad to see it go away, I have the same van, except it's diesel, with a "no communication with the ABS module" to diagnose, so I would have learned something more from your great work

That hood latch reminds me of my 79 Z28. It was always stuck. At least there was a lot of room to work on the engine. It was a very strong engine. 350 4speed with some mods. Too bad they were rust buckets. A buddy bought the drivetrain and the scrapyard gave me 500$. Not a good ROI for the 9k I paid for it new.

No new car is an investment except in the sense that you are spending money. Historically new cars lose value as soon as you drive out of the dealers lot. Certain cars do wind up being collectable but it takes decades to get a positive ROI. The question is how long were you able to enjoy your Z28? How much fun did you have with it?

Since that a part is hard to get, probably likely the cause of the issue. Ford had a recall for those years, they put a corrosive break fluid in. They recalled my 2007 Milan to flush the brake fluid. But since the corrosion took place for 14 years already, I assume the damage is done.

Parts for my Ford have been on back order since at least early November with no prospects from the Dealer. As it was a power train part we couldn't drive it. We had to buy another car.

If they do scrap it some junkyard is gonna love all those nice parts. The interior seemed in surprisingly good condition for 300k. Considering the cost just to fix the ABS, let alone whatever else it wrong with it or will break soon, they're making a smart choice by looking for something new instead of pouring money into it.

I had to make the same choice recently with my last vehicle. Loved it and still in overall good shape, but it was reaching the point of having some very expensive repairs on the horizon just from wear. And when it's your work vehicle and you need it running in order to do your job properly having something that's going to need a lot of shop time is doubly bad. Traded it in for a new RAM with the new bells and whistles they've added. I still miss it, but I also love the new truck.

I mean to fair, ABS is one of those systems that is a benefit but not required, even as a 40 year old, my first car never had ABS when it was made, you just have to drive a little safer and try to avoid situations that might induce the brakes to lock and thus the car to slide.

In the UK, you could get that ABS module rebuilt for under $400! ECU testing would be my choice based on previous experience. Brilliant video as ever, thank you so much for posting! :-)

Rodent poop, would lead me to check for chewed wires for the ABS. If mine at 300,000 miles, I'd say just do the valve cover gaskets and an oil change.

I honestly wish more people would make this decision. I’ve done roughly $5k worth of work in just the last month or two on a early 2000’s Malibu that isn’t worth even half that with the used market inflated. Which is a lot of money for this individual. I’ve all but begged him not to give me the work and to get what he can for it and use that money to find a more reliable vehicle. I know it’s only a matter of time before it will be back for more despite my best efforts it’s got over 350k on the clock so he’s more than gotten his moneys worth out of it.
