I think “leaving my wife without a husband” is abstract but the airport situation is concrete. Sometimes a smaller concrete moment hits harder than a big abstract one.

Related, sooner trumps later. My father smoked his whole life. Couldn't quit no matter what. Three days in the hospital in his mid-70s with double pulmonary embolisms, and the doctors saying to him that he's the one patient in the (non-emergency) hospital at that moment most likely to die. Hasn't touched tobacco once since.

When I was 20, I was working towards becoming a police officer. I did all the testing and passed it all! Then I broke my ankle.... When I was 29, I tried getting back in shape, but I pushed too hard too soon, and I tore my Achilles tendon whilst doing shuttle runs between two pylons.... I'm 37, now, and I weigh 130lbs more than when I completed the police testing 17 years ago. Time for change. Thanks for posting these inspirational videos.

This is something I tell people who aren't particularly overweight but are very inactive. Having that energy, that ability to just keep going, performing whatever physical tasks you want. I think it aids sleep as well. And actually when someone is overweight the real focus should be on fitness and underlying health benefits. That they should lose weight and improve those health markers as well is just an enormous cherry on top.

My moment was a few months before my 28th birthday. I'd been invited to try bouldering by my brother-in-law and my main concern was whether or not my weight would rip the holds off the wall. It's been 10 months, I've dropped 4 stone (56 lbs/25 kg) and while I'm still 18 stone I recently finished my first 10K and go bouldering every week. I now have my sights set on Hyrox. Your videos have helped motivate me massively. Thank you Mark!

I can totally relate to this. My moment, was Christmas dinner 2022. In that moment everything changed. From well over 18st I am today able to boast being a Hyrox athlete, doing 5ks at the drop of a hat, ready for my first 10k and duathlon in April. You, Mark, were part of that change. I've lost about the same amount in the about the same time. Mine was from alcohol and depression, and a truly awful family, and I am still not done with my weight loss or my mental health rebuild. At my heaviest I weighed 535 pounds, currently 2 years 3 months in and down roughly 250 pounds I think. Still probably another 100 left, but I'm now at the weight I can exercise and rebuild my body so it's getting better. I'm loving the Ben Patrick/Kneesovertoes approach to functional mobility because of the low impact exercise with high results of restorative conditioning. Anyway, all that to say that I feel his story in my bones and wish everyone who wants to get better the best of results. Also, Mark I didn't realize you were 6'6". I am 6'7" so I know that feeling too.

To me it was very different. I had moved to a much bigger flat, a process that had taken me 2 weeks of constant physical work. When it all was set and done, I felt bored and then empty, and I remembered that usually I would eat something. Now I am a counselor and I asked myself what I would do instead, what I imagined myself doing in an ideal state. And I pictured myself hiking, being in nature, being with a partner and experiencing the world. But I couldn’t because. And then I noticed that in my inner narrative I would always wait for a partner to do all of that. But I just decided to not wait any longer. In general. And this emptiness started to dissipate.

It's nice being able to pinpoint the moment that you just decide enough is enough. I've been fat my whole life, but not prohibitively so (175cm, ~110kg at my heaviest) I had to take a break from work recently because of stress and mental health issues. I knew I needed rest, but I just couldn't let myself spend my 3 months off sitting on my ass and playing video game, which was my usual de-stress method. I realised something needed to change or my mental health wasn't going to improve, so I decided improving my physical health was a good use of my time off. I'm only down about 6kg (108->102) in 8 weeks, but my fitness is improving rapidly. I feel so much better every day. My tight clothes now fit me well. My sleep apnea is gone and I snore much less. I can run 5k without my heart and lungs screaming at me. For me I think it was reaching a new low in my mental health, I just couldn't let my physical health stay as poor as it was, otherwise I knew I'd keep getting worse.

That's the moment when I've decided enough was enough, I lost 44.8kg in 8 months, became fit enough to run 4 timen 10 miles a week. Became a climber where you could even see abs (although not a 6-pack though). It's the moment when my life's just changed. My click just sort of happened, in the evening of 27/03/2022 I just decided enough was enough and just quit sugar and processed foods. I did not have any embarrasing stories or anything like that, but I'm so glad that click just happened to me.

i gained weight, which for me is fantastic. I was dealing with what was probably undiagnosed depression for years, and I would go a whole day maybe eating one meal, because I just didn't want to eat, didn't want to sleep, I can't really explain it, but if you know, then I'm sorry. I went from being so much of an active kid that they put me in higher-grade-level teams, to having my skin stretched over my ribcage to the point where it went almost under my ribs, if you can picture that. I could barely lift my own bag, and failed at anything remotely athletic if anyone around me managed to drag me into it. Long story short, I just didn't want to exist, and that manifested in my physical health as well. A couple years ago, my mental health went wayyyyy up, and I really started to care that I couldn't do much of anything, because I went from barely existing, to really, really wanting to thrive, and I just couldn't keep up. So I started working out, and wowwww, it's been a journey that's for sure (still is lol), but it feels AMAZING to have the most defined part of my stomach be (very slightly) defined abs instead of my ribcage. I eat now, not just eat healthy, but actually eat full meals, and I just want to put that out there in case someone can relate to that, please know you are not alone. I couldn't run a mile in under 15 min without literally almost throwing up and temporarily losing most of my vision, and I had other people tell me they WISHED THEY HAD MY BODY, BC I WAS SO THIN AND "ATRACTTIVE" (for context, I think it might be important to mention I'm female lol). I hated myself then, I literally wanted to die, and would do things in hopes that I could just get hurt so I could die without anyone feeling guilty, and now I'm so happy, so, so, so happy. So hey, work towards YOUR healthy weight, no matter what that direction is, and you'll get there :D

Thanks for sharing everyone. My version pales in comparison to most on here. But mine was when I couldn't bend down to tie my shoes and none of my pants fit. Seed oils screwed me over. that was the major change and it was fast. The weight was creeping up and i thought i was doing it right. nope. Find what works. Mine was fasting and butter. Eat that and some veg. I lost a ton of weight. but just 40 pounds. but fixed high BP, neuropathy, hair loss, metal clarity improved, joints, muscle growth. it's all related. nitric oxide is a big part of metabolism . Breathe out your nose for weight loss. During exercise. Even you buff endurance folks, try it. I bet it'll help. It helps my kids sleep better and me. Tape your mouth if you can at night. That helps recovery.

"If I got up too fast I'd probably vomit before anything else" well that should be plenty to stop the fight, just make sure you vomit on them! :D Seriously though, I think that a-ha moments are often moments one would identify as moments of absurdity. I agree with Mark in that we get immensely creative to justify bad behaviour when it comes to addiction/bad habits (like what Miles said about potentially dying young, "it happens"), but when the situation gets really absurd and almost surreal is when you realise something needs to be done about your behaviour. Diaper lining on the plane because you can't use the bathroom fits the bill, as does an almost physical fight on an airplane.

The crazy thing to me is how so many people never have this sort of realization. They just accept these horrible, disgusting, embarrassing things they have to do as a part of their reality and decide to live with it rather than make the obvious change. For me, I was injured for years and got out of shape, so the second I was able I knew I would lose the weight. But even then something as simple as being able to hear myself breath through my nose was the line. I always looked with disgust at people who seem like they are about to die just sitting there because of their breathing and wondered how they live like that. And many people accept far worse consequences as a result od obesity.

I just cannot understand how anyone can allow themselves get into the states they do (apart from medical issues). Pushing crap constantly into the hole in their face year after year until they look like they are going to explode,is to me just crazy. This guy is in the very very small minority that did something about it. I have come to the conclusion that most people are so incredibly mentally weak and think up any excuse/reality they can to justify what they are doing.
@irfuel

It's because you don't become obese in one week, or even one year. It's a very slow transition that takes years. It's like getting older. You see yourself in the mirror every day and don't realise it, but someone who hasn't seen you in 20 years will. Same here. You don't wake up one day thinking "wow I look old". They just slowly drift upwards, until a point comes where "it's gone too far already, so fuck it ... can't do anything about it now". And then there is addiction too. Sugar = drugs.

Honestly, mental health is absolutely part of the equation. I don't know if I'd define it as 'mentally weak', but the 'mental' part of it is, I think, the largest part. Mental and emotional health impacts physical health a lot more than people realize. Those that don't have to deal with depression or crippling self doubt or loathing won't ever really understand what that is like, so I guess I'll give you a pass on that one, but the angry and spiteful approach you're taking here will absolutely not turn the boat around for virtually anyone. In short, I was in a pretty terrible place mentally and emotionally for a good portion of my life. It sucked. It isn't an excuse, just the reality of it. At some point SOMETHING happened to help snap me out of it and DO something about my situation, and I still struggle to put my finger on what it was EXACTLY that triggered the change of approach for me. I still struggle with a lot of the self doubt/imposter syndrome/self loathing, even after making such enormous changes. The difference is that I recognize how damaging those things can be for me to entertain or let dwell, and I do something about them right away. Consistency of action is also a major key for me in maintaining and improving my position these days. To those that struggle and are in a similar place to where I was, all I can do is encourage them to find that spark that gets them going and then hang on, doing something every day to improve their current lot in life in the direction they desire to go. Making them villains in their own lives isn't going to help their self loathing or hate any, and will likely only drive them deeper into whatever mental or emotional condition they struggle with, making the situation overall worse and more bleak. While you are not wrong in much of your assessment, Simon, I'd encourage you to approach the situation with more compassion and a more helpful attitude. It will likely create or spur more change than outright attacks on the integrity or character of those you are supposedly trying to understand or help.

I've gained weight and lost weight a few times, mostly somewhat deliberately. I just find it quite easy to get back in shape when I make that decision. So maybe that puts me in a better place than most people but I wouldn't ever go near Ozempic or similar. They're effective but carry risks and you can't stay on them permanently. I'd always recommend changes to lifestyle - increased activity, better diet/portion control, better sleep, stop alcohol, etc... And the best time to start is now.
