There's a lot to love with Too Many Bones. My favorite Baddie keyword is Detonate "At end of Movement Phase, if this unit is at less than full HP, it will defeat itself deal # True Dmg to each adjacent unit". Also, love Engulf. "All Dmg rolled by this unit also hits all adjacent units to target (including self) as well as triggers reaction Skills, if applicable" It's so much fun to position the Baddies in a way that they take themselves out.

Some of the advanced gearlocs actually rely heavily on rolling bones and using backup plan abilities. Polaris comes to mind immediately as one with massive reliance on rolling bones. Pretty amazing how tactical the game can be on such a small grid. Also amazing how many totally unique characters they have managed to create within this system. Base game of TMB is just a taste though, the expansion gearlocs and batttles are so much more dynamic. The game really starts to shine with undertow and ramps up even more with unbreakable. Just a few thoughts on one of my all time favorite games.

War Chest is another game that makes great use of poker chips: draw them from a bag, play them face up or face down in front of you to issue commands or recruit, place them on the board as units, stack them when you bolster a unit. Drawing poker chips or other large tactile tokens from a bag is always fun.

This is one of my favorite games of all time! I’m surprised you didn’t mention the spotlight of the game, the dice! I’ve never seen anything quite like it here where each skill you learn is just another dice that provides a cool ability once per combat. Super tactical despite being very luck based with the dice.

You know, I like that mechanism in theory, but in our game we very rarely added more dice, so the additional dice had minimal impact.

@@jameystegmaierit’s worth trying again with the skill dice as that’s where I think a lot of the fun and variety comes from. Also some of the baddies specially make it difficult when you rely just on the base stats and rolling normal attack/defense dice which makes you really embrace the branching skill trees of each different gearloc.

Yes I agree with the last comment- the skill dice provide an enormous wealth and depth for each character- so that you may play with the same character multiple times and vary the dice (and therefore the skill sets) you accumulate each time. I love this game- played it a chunk of times a few years ago and this has whet my appetite to get back into the game!

Well it really depends on the iteration of content, early content(base game) favored the stats while later content makes it almost impossible without balance of stats and skills

I haven't played but too many bones blew me away when I first saw it last year at Gen Con. I don't know that I've seen any other game produced to that high quality across all components

That’s kind of Chip Theory Games’ (the publisher)’s schtick. Everything is wildly well produced. Very cool company!

I had to look back to rediscover‘scouting’ I’d completely forgotten it was a thing all characters could do! I want to get this to the table again soon! Love this game!

Great discussion about great game. Production value is really high for this one, tactile experience is great, only other game in my collection giving me this my pleasure to move things around is Tapestry. Regarding favourite mechanism, I think using unique dice for skills is really clever.
