I definitely agree that it's about time for a brand new OS to be developed by _somebody_ that isn't just another Linux distro, or based on Windows or Apple's Unix-based OS. Like a brand new Unix-based would be fine I guess. But with the advancements of ARM chips, they really do deserve their own "built from the ground-up" OS that isn't associated with any of those other companies/brands. A big issue with a lot of them, is they are built _on top_ of previously existing OS architecture/code. Like Windows is really just 95/XP re-skinned and tweaked from then all the way to Windows 11 now. Linux distros are all built on the main three Debian, Red Hat or SUSE and are just reworkings of those, and even those are reworkings of the versions that came before. Same with Apple's Unix OS's. It's about time someone started over from absolute _scratch_ and developed something _actually_ new. I seriously doubt that will happen - at least not for a long time - perhaps only after another major architecture shift. But one can dream.
What would be the benefit in making something brand new though? Unless there is some feature that is just impossible to implement in the Unix-like or Windows kernels, I don't see the reason to reinvent the wheel
@@kyonblack7901 Well for one, you can code them to work more efficiently with the newer CPU architecture - there's a reason Windows always struggles with any kind of mobile-based version of their OS and their ARM side isn't that great either - and that reason _is_ that old platform it's built on top of. It's bulky, chock full of junk code and translation layers just to get anything to work. And that means creating 'forks' of the OS is incredibly difficult. It's also why they keep breaking things every time they update it or when they went from 10 to 11 half the stuff that _worked_ in 10 suddenly didn't in 11 despite essentially being _the same OS_ . You can also make them much smaller in size and use far less RAM if you start from scratch and throw out all the crap that has built up over the years that you really no longer need. And finally and really most importantly - competition. Really, aside from Apple there is zero competition for Microsoft. And that is _not_ a good thing. For one it locks people in to dealing with _just_ them, and that means they can dictate whatever they want and we just have to take it. Like the changes over the years to Windows to remove your ability to customize it in any meaningful way. Or the fact they took what used to be an open DOS platform, made their own (copied it) then _forced_ everyone to adopt it and kill off the open side which permanently stifled development. Or Apple's control over what software/apps are even allowed onto their platform, and their anti-repair/upgrade attitude. Linux would count if it could ever get higher than a few percentage points of market share - but its biggest advantage is also its biggest weakness on that front and that is _too many forks_ and not enough focus and therefore development on one single distro. And the average consumer doesn't want to have to deal with all that, they want to purchase one thing and it just works. Most people these days don't want to mess around in command lines or have to use emulators or translation software just to get a handful of games to work. It's getting better on that front but it's just nowhere near there yet. And it's been that way for literally decades. And honestly, any OS that allows the world to get away from the .exe file format - and therefore Microsofts ownership of that entire space, is a _great_ thing.
The solution is easy. Someone needs to partner with Microsoft to make the Gamepass Deck. Maybe do something like the Amazon Kindle does with ads and have two versions. One version that comes with a Gamepass membership, and for like $200 more sell a second version that doesn't require a Gamepass membership. This way the hardware devs have a game service infrastructure to help offset the cost so they don't need to get the cheapest parts they can find, and Microsoft makes a fortune just on licensing Gamepass without the risk of flopping in the oversaturated handheld market or making money for Nintendo by letting the Switch have Gamepass.
I think we're getting into a good point with handheld. Competition should make products offer more at a lower price. I had a gpd win 1 and now there are way more options depending on needs
My gpd win 1 was a bittersweet experience. Sometimes, I loved it. The deck tho? It's been a constant surprise. Not that much time has passed! So the market is FINALLY where I wanted it to be when I bought the Experia play! 😊😊😊
Handheld PCs are coming out. The Switch is still the only handheld console in the market (assuming you are not counting 3ds and Vita). Also why do people act as if handheld systems are some kind of a new concept. Handhelds have existed since the day of the Game & Watch. Gameboy, GBA, DS, 3ds, PSP, PS Vita, Game Gear, etc. all exist.
steam deck is just as much of a console as the switch. It ticks literally every box that a console does. Does the fact that the ps2 and ps3 could have linux installed make them PCs now and not consoles?
@@HearMeLearn except the official website itself states that Steam Deck is a handheld PC. Valve have no where used the word console. Also Steam is a PC digital store. And the Steam Deck does not restrict you to one store like PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox. Steam Deck officially allows installation of Windows, a PC OS. And the Deck runs PC versions of the games. So no, Steam Deck is a PC.
I have a steamdeck and also just got my GDP win4. the steam deck has been great but it is super big to carry. The GDP win 4 is much smaller and and is windows portable and so far I am liking it almost as much as my steamdeck. I would love to see more Nintendo switch type devices that allow off-line play. I am tempted to check out the ROG Ally when it comes out. The new PSP that needs a data connection to play is a big no for me.
The inputs alone sell the deck, there isn't a game I can't play, the ally is only better docked, otherwise the battery life is worse than the deck since it uses more power
I don't think it counts as too much, since these expensive handhelds are still just niche. Switch and Steam Deck are the only ones that are mainstream, affordable, and accessible to people that don't want PC jank. If we get a portable Xbox or PS with its own OS, that would be the next one to make it big
It would be interesting to see if Xbox does release their own, they compete with Sony directly, but don't do everything the same, like adaptive triggers and the motion aim stuff. And since their PC, they can just leverage their cloud apps for now. I'm surprised a little Sony hasn't released a new one yet (since psp and vita), or maybe their taking notes for now?
@@syd417 Oh cool! I wouldn't be surprised with Xbox either, I heard they were trying to get their cloud app on nintendo. I know they're currently pushing in on TVs. My company is selling TV and controller bundles like hotcakes
Yeah, Sony and MS are the only ones with a real shot besides the two you mentioned. They can subsidize the price enough to make it attractive and they already have solid interfaces people are familiar with. Everyone else is just eating scraps until they give up and move on. AYANEO has a chance to hang around simply because they crowd fund and don't need to sell in huge volume. They fill the alternative niche just fine doing that.
could you imagine an XBOX Series P (Portable), that can play the same games as the XBOX Series S but at 900p or 1080p and being able to play those games OTG with all the back compatibility features and stuff, it would be a MUST HAVE.
I think any sort of question of "too many" is coming at the question from the wrong angle. Sure, having 50 different consoles like the PS5 or XBONE is (arguably) a bad thing as it fragments the market as companies are incentivized to get console exclusives. However, there is no chance of these devices fragmenting the market as they are because they all pull from the steam game base. To me this question is more similar to asking if there are too many laptops on the market. Which unless you are looking at it from a very specific angle (choice paralysis and potential for buy overpriced duds due to lack of research) this is undoubtedly a good thing. It's a bunch of companies competing to make the best product they can for their chosen price point which incentivizes them to innovate and not rest on their laurels(cough, Nintendo, cough).
Looking forward to the Ally, but I'm beyond tired of Windows as the only viable gaming platform. Steam Deck has proven once and for all that Linux is viable competition, something we Linux users have been saying for years. The flood of Windows handhelds just perpetuates the shittiness that is Windows. I very much want an Ally, but I will be putting some form of Linux/SteamOS on it.
As soon as I get back to a stable source of income, I'm going to save up for a GPD Win 4. In terms of features and form factor, it's my ideal handheld PC, and from what I've read, people who've had their hands on it don't seem to have had any major issues with it. It's also more powerful than a Steam Deck. Of course, it costs twice as much, but I think it'll be worth it.
Naaah especially since the 90s-2000s, everyone wanted to be gameboy and ds, it ranges from psp success, which is not gba or ds success, to gizmondo's widescreen variant success, which was never released due to their company going caput.
Got Steam deck, after a month I sold it. Very disappointing, become easily hot and go in shutdown, using the original Steam deck dock the graphics is disappointing as well as performances on a monitor or a TV. Don't waste your money as I did.
I don’t buy that you aren’t getting payed to promote the Ally. There is nothing significantly better about the rog than any of the other handhelds other than it might be a little cheaper. People aren’t buying handhelds because they want MAX Performance! On a 8” screen?! No people love having a portable handheld console that is also affordable. Who the F wants windows on a handheld? I can’t stand windows on a big screen😂
Yeah, I think you need to open your mind a little more. You're a bit too insulated. There's a lot of people that are going to be ordering an Ally on Thursday and better performance is among the reasons. I had a Steam Deck and now I have a OneXPlayer 2....and I'm never going back to the Steam Deck. I navigate Windows just fine and especially now that I have a nice front end (which wouldn't have been possible on the Deck), I barely use the windows side of things. Even so, windows equals freedom. No more compatibility limitations, proton layers, and jumping through hoops to do what I need. On top of that, I don't have any emulation limitations like I did on the Deck.
I love handhelds! I really hope Sony gets back in the handheld game (not remote play/cloud gaming). I have a Steam Deck, a Switch, a 3DS, and last but not least, a DS.
theres too many handhelds that nobody is buying exsept the switch yes that also includes steamdeck a sucsess for steam sure but barely 2 million units is tiny
I feel like despite all this, eventually people will just default to the established brands. Sony, Nintendo, Valve and MS are the only companies that can subsidize their products enough to make their handhelds attractive price wise. Everyone else is just flooding into a tiny niche market of $700-$1500 handheld PC's. Even if each brand has a gaming handheld, I feel Sony, MS and Valve would be all very similar to each other with Nintendo being the only one with enough unique software to be attractive.
Yeah and the last time Sony tried to compete with Nintendo on the handheld side, they got kicked badly. The DS sold double of what the PSP sold and the 3ds slaughtered the Vita. Sony is best left making home consoles. There is a reason why Microsoft backed away from the handheld market. They were looking to make one back during the PSP and DS days.
I think we have too many emulation based devices considering most sub $300 smartphones can emulate 75% of what there is to even emulate. Most people already have a capable device ready to go. Use an a console controller with a $20 clip or buy a Razer Kishi if you got the budget and save spending even more on a device, while also not having to carry around another. Streaming, pointless for many people so no opinion and it's pretty much available on everything with a screen. PC based gaming handhelds are still early, but I'm interested to see how fast we can transition and make it a common platform on the market.
Austin need brain workout pronto "more like the xbox series S..." ???, the new proccerer like 1.5 more than the steam deck last time i checked xbox series S 4.2TF
One of the greatest "tricks" the Steam Deck has that other handhelds just can't achieve, is keeping pretty playable stats when running in 10W mode. I wonder if these newer Z1 chips will be able to keep up the playability of games at much lower TDPs in the same way - because power and high performance is great, but battery life matters _way_ more for a handheld. So that really needs to be targeted specifically and I honestly have my doubts.
Yes there are but that's great because this creates a standard and the cream will rise..... Here is my prediction... Switch, StemDeck and a Handheld Xbox/Microsoft Windows Powered Handheld by Microsoft will be the standard..... Microsoft's "XBox" division will be Handheld/Handheld PC focused going forward to create Handheld Specific Game OS.... XBox's mistake was the series s not being a handheld...... The XBox Series s will be Xbox's WiiU moment where they released a great device but in the wrong form factor..... they will learn from that and will come back strong with the right device....... Hybrid Handheld just like steam deck but runs on windows but the OS is what XBox gamers are used to ... so the average consumer will see a "Console" but it'll be a full on computer as well. The reason why it will be a microsoft product is because those other hardware pc makers won't be able to make a device at the $399 pricepoint. That pricepoint is important because thee entry point has to be low for mass adoption....
Back when the Microsoft Xbox game pass PC app and the Microsoft app store was heavily advertised for Windows 10, 6 years ago. Microsoft could have made an Xbox edition Surface pro or even some other portable computer that let you play the Xbox Game pass app on the go. Another thing is all these handheld gaming pc's all have there own flaws. For starters is that the Steam platform requires you have internet to access your Steam library and same goes with most of the other gaming distribution stores like the ones from Ubisoft, Epic Games, EA, Microsoft, and others. But there will always be that battery life and storage issues on these devices. Along with the weird unstandardized sizing and button layouts.
Gamepass a successful failure. It takes a lot more people to make a lot less money over alot more time. Especially when they put games on day 1. You can have 15-20 million people on GamePass and it still will not equal the revenue of what PlayStation can do with five million people with 1 SINGLE GAME. Putting a brand new game on GamePass even if 15 million people play it that is still one month or a year worth of money. $300 million say being divided and divvied up. PlayStation releases a game can make over $400 million in less than 5 days with 5 or 6 million people that goes only to the Devs that made it an PlayStation. As a consumer I DO NOT support Day 1 releases on a Subscription. Look what it's done to Xbox games. Look how much more time it takes for Xbox to make money back. We go to work we expect to be paid and we should be expected to get the highest quality. Making money and profit is what drives innovation. Xbox game pass is no Contender PlayStation. I have no problem paying for quality and much rather have quality over quantity I don't do handhelds or anything like that. So makes no difference to me.. I will buy NONE of them. If I'm going to game I'm going to game on my big OLED LG TV on a console. If I'm traveling gaming is not on my mind. But at home It will always be offline story-driven because I never do online, MMO and stay far far away from GAAS CRAP. Plus I only buy Disc NEVER EEEEVVER Digital.
It's a handheld console if it has native gameplay and proprietary physical media. There's only one of these. We need MORE. It's a handheld PC if it has native gameplay but no physical media releases. Steam Deck, ok... we need one more running Windows out of the box. Make it cheap. It's a shop terminal if it's cloud gaming device. It's worth nothing. We need approx. 0 of these. use your phone.
I legit agree with Microsoft needing to make an Xbox handheld that isn't just a cloud gaming device (but can cloud game). It would probably take over a good market share of the handheld space. The rest of the handheld market is far too niche, not enough support, and the steam deck will likely be the main squeeze for a long time coming for people who want to play pc games and do some cloud and retro gaming. Very few people comparatively want to be paying full budget pc price for handhelds, and likely already have good enough PCs and cloud gaming options already on hand (says guy with a switch, pc, xbox, ps4, and some retro handhelds)
I really doubt a PSP3. They kinda have to force ps5 games onto that, if they wanna succeed. 3 years after ps5 launch. Without the developing software bring made to easily port to weaker hardware. Xbox kinda has the better setting for that, since it could be just as powerful as the series S, a Series S mobile, if you will. You don't need to port anything, since it's already ported onto that weaker hardware.
I'm getting between 100 and 120 on the latest Star Wars game on my top end PC. Heck, my Win Max 2 got a steady 35 fps most of the time with a few dips and spikes.
The handheld gaming industry is currently like the car industry. Steam deck is like Hyundai/ Kia. When One X is Tesla quality but expensive. The other brands are like Gm, Ford, etc trying to compete in a market that has a quality and affordable offering with efficient tech.
I have a switch lite, but the screen is too small for me. I was thinking of getting the Switch Oled, but I'm starting to dislike the Nintendo online store. Also, over time, I've purchased several Steam and GOG games. The other day I walked into a Best Buy and saw the Asus Rog Ally, and I think I am going to go with that device instead. Its more expensive but it seems like all things considered, its a good deal for me.
Xbox Portable sounds cool and not totally retarded like most of Microsoft's gaming products. As long as Xbox 5 is the name for their next home console(s).
whatever comes next, it has to be as affordable as the steamdeck if you want wide adoption of hte device. It also needs to be AVAILABLE without pre-ordering, much like the PSP was back in the day. Plain and simple.
There are countless Laptop and Desktop gaming PCs. This is normal for PCs. Handheld gaming PCs are still PCs, they are not consoles. **Though they have console like ease of use features.
Sony's isn't a real Steam Deck/ROG Ally handheld. I think it's just a wireless controller you can take with you to play distant from your PS5 within your house. It's less expensive than the rest of the hand helds.
There's no reason for Xbox to make a windows Handheld when the ROG Ally and even the Steamdeck exist. I'm suspecting that Xbox is just gonna rely on 3rd party devices.
Next-gen Nintendo switch is most likely to be a handheld It is rumored that Windows/ xbox to be entering the space as well and sony half heartedly entering with there remote play only thing. Next gen is the gen of the portable P/C gaming LETS GOOOOO
You both are forgetting one major thing, developers are lazy nowadays. You said it yourself, even PC ports are bad. You expect devs to port into so many different OS’ and do a good job at it. I see TONS of issues behind these handhelds
The single most important thing with these handhelds is support. With a switch you're pretty much guaranteed to have it from launch day to the day it is discontinued and usually a good few years beyond that. The only one that comes close so far is the steam deck in that way and honestly the only one I would trust again would be another switch or Nintendo type portable hybrid console. Microsoft,Sony I don't know if I'd trust them especially Sony after the debacle with the Vita.
As much as how better spec Allay is, running on window is just a no no, you don't know when it suddenly decides your control isn't working and force you to connect mouse and keyboard or restart. And how many window bullshit running background eat up your hardware that can't be turn off. Steam deck is definition of user friendly.
Sony can do handhelds because they did it already. MS can do handhelds because they have the money to make the Xbox portable if they want. Steam I think should not make another handheld and just make the OS that can be used on any handheld, this way they will make all their money from games as they do now. Nintendo does not count because they are like Apple and are too closed off to join this party. All the handhelds that are the same is fine since that means more machines to run SteamOS on just like all the windows laptops, all the hardware is the same some just look nicer then the others but they all work the same way. If all the handhelds let you load SteamOS and/or MS Gamepass and/or SonyOS then you do not need Nintendo. If Nintendo losses in this race they will have to either open the walled garden or watch the garden die.
No offense to Linux, but! If a handful mini pc can game and run my programs.. that's it I'm good. Linux... Doesn't do you for me. I dig the ally for that reason
the only issue with the Xbox side of things is even if they make the best handheld what games are you going to play? cause with the way Xbox is going their going to be relying on 3rd party developers to make games for them meaning their going to be at a loss where as Sony has got a lot of exclusives that they just need to port and maybe instead of porting make a game that is a hand held exclusive like let's say the spiderman series, instead of porting they make a new story and gameplay for handheld only whilst still under the spiderman series, that way they'd make money on both the games and the handheld consoles. unless Microsoft can find a way to bring their studios up to speed like Sony, I doubt I'd see them dominating the handheld side of things.
11:53 all of those cookies are actually Nabisco. That means that the cookies except Hydrox are mostly made with the same parts. They don't source flour for cookies from different vendors depending on the cookie it goes into. So it's actually more like the computer components than you think.
I realy think that when ps6 will come out, it will have a "regular" console version and a handheld version, which will be a bit weaker. Kibd of like xbox series x and s.
Nonsense, thats like saying too many PC manufacturers. We need more to create more competition to keep everyone pushing the limits and eventually creating a damn good product. You only get that when the company your competing against wants to take you down .
I wouldnt mind a simple console that mirrors your pc or steam link to lay in bed for cheap and game The steamdeck is expensive when i can just jump on my pc and game, i know a phone can do this but a bigger screen would be nice
Just give me a vita with 2 more triggers and press in joysticks with todays technology in the old case size/weight. Everyrhing else the same and id be over the moon
I hav ebeen jumping between my steam deck and my switch, If the steam deckw as the size of my switch I would probably just get rid of my switch. My switch is for travel gameplay and my steam deck is for when I want to play elden ring on the toilet
Man, I remember when handhelds were said to be dead. No one is gone to want a handheld system, when you have a phone. And that was when the 3DS was coming out. Then those people said the 3DS would be the last handheld. And then the Switch happened. Boy, it sure is a strange world we live in, ever since handheld gaming systems went extinct. ;p
no way, not too much of a good thing compatition is all ways good drives prices down and drives inovation foward ya some companies will not be able to keep up but overall it will spur things foward and drive prices down as companies compete with one another
If Nintendo releases the switch 2, it's game over man. They've positioned themselves in such a way that people who don't know about these other companies are just going to call it a bigger switch or switch ripoff
Bro red bull can kill you if you use it like that to often I now a couple people in my town that died drinking that and monster burn that shit out in the gym if you drink it but sitting and taking in that amount of energy is extremely bad for you heart
The ally is a really tempting device for this price. It feels like the device the switch 2 should ve been. Would be interesting to see steam os running on the Asus competitor. ☮️
I think aya needs to cool it a bit and just concentrate on one affordable model i wanted one but i know if i wait a couple of months they will be a better model
