Too Many Rescues to Count

In the end, we counted 7 rescues. We are in the middle of our busiest time of the year, and it is not unusual to catch 5, 10 or even more seals in one run. We probably missed one or two entangled seals while we were busy with the ones in our net, we will have to come back for those. There are many factors why we do most of our work in the time between May and October. The Namibian fishing industry is at their busiest. Most entanglements can be directly linked to ghost fishing gear or other fishing industry related rubbish. The more fishing takes place, the more entangled seals we find. The weather is also a factor - it is cold this time of the year, and seals spend more time on the beaches to warm up, giving us a change to spot entangled ones. And young seals have just the right age to swim a bit further and explore new areas, and their curiosity makes them easy prey for plastic rubbish.

This video is proof to me of how hardwired we are to notice the bad and dismiss the good. Here I was, along with many other commenters, fixated on the poor pup at 4.41 - 4.52 with the broken back, feeling devastated for her, while you successfully rescued SEVEN pups from certain death! I am really struggling to allow the happy relief for those 7 to overcome the sadness for that one with the unfixable injury. I'm sure it must be just as upsetting for your wonderful team, but you all stay focussed and determined and keep saving so many anyway. Thank you!

I will never understand why plastic isn’t made biodegradable - and I mean Bio Plastic biodegradable, like cellulose based plastics. If even the fishing industry would adopt this practice, imagine the lives saved. It would decompose quickly, and leave nothing behind. I need to research it more, and write letters. It isn’t much, but maybe it could help… I wish I could do more, but at least I was able to make a donation while I’ve been moved to the cancer ward. It isn’t much, but anything to help the fight. Thank you OCN for all you do. Seeing these animals fight to live, and how you help them, it genuinely helps a lot of us to remember to never stop the fight, and to never give up.

Thank you very much for your concern. I feel the same and has no love lost on plastics. I can relate to your drive in wanting to make a positive difference in the world, especially when dealing with life changing illness. This channel inspired me to look into ocean clean-up enterprises, including ghost gear recovery, as well as stop eating seafood, changing to more environmentally friendly energy companies and bank, buy needed recycled plastic, including ghost gear plastic products, etc. I want to contribute more to the solutions than the problems. Don't forget to take care of yourself, too! ❤

I googled "which countries cull seals". There may be more information elsewhere. As of August 2024, only five countries still conduct commercial seal hunting: Canada, Greenland, Namibia, Norway, and Russia. The United States used to be involved in the industry, but now has a complete ban on commercial hunting of marine mammals, with the exception of indigenous peoples who can hunt a small number of seals each year. More than 36 countries, including the U.S. and the European Union, have also banned products derived from seals. Here's some more information about seal hunting in some of these countries: Namibia From 2005 to 2015, Namibia exported almost 400,000 seal skins. The country has an annual quota of 80,000 Cape fur seal pups and 6,000 bulls. Hunters are thought to hire part-time workers to kill the pups, which are between 7 and 11 months old, using spiked wooden clubs. Canada Some say that sealers shoot at seals from moving boats, often only wounding the pups. The main sealskin processing plant in Canada deducts $2 from the price they pay for skins for each bullet hole, so sealers are reluctant to shoot seals more than once. However, wounded seals often suffer in agony, slipping beneath the water to die slowly and sometimes never being recovered. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Seal hunting - Wikipedia Today, commercial sealing is conducted by only five nations: Canada, Greenland, Namibia, Norway, and Russia. The United States, which had been heavily involved ... The Humane Society of the United States About the Canadian seal hunt | The Humane Society of the United States It is important to note that each killing method is demonstrably cruel. While watching the pups break off into little groups I at first think “Oh how cute”’ then I realize how terrifying for them as they believe that the team are a pack of predators. If only they could know that these guys are only after the true predators-that horrible man made junk that entangles them! Well done gentlemen! 🦭🌊💙

Hello everyone! 7 rescues. All the seals have complex entanglements, huge balls of fishing line that strangle, cut, cause a lot of pain. But these 7 seals got their chance at a long life. "We are friends," says Tony to one of the seals. It's the honest truth. These people are really friends with the seals, nature and all of us! Thank you, team! Today is August 25, 2024. This wonderful channel has 2.08 million subscribers.

Hello! 👋🏼😃☀️ I was looking for this comment first, and I'll sit and watch in a minute. It looks like it was a busy day at the beach. The team must be exhausted at the end of days like this! Good to see the numbers going up, Olga! ❤

I lost count as well. Whew! My heart breaks for the brown seal in the middle of the video who was not using his back flippers, and his back looked misshapen. Nature is so harsh without humans dumping their garbage in the ocean. Thank you OCN angels for 'too many to count' lives saved!! 💙🖤🤍

I can't count the times of how often I found myself holding my breath, covering my mouth with my hands, praying to Lord God.....these poor, poor animals!! So much pain and suffering. The one that had the line in his mouth really, really got me, but all were so bad. I really love and appreciate each one of you special people. You are SO important in what you do. It's awful that you are needed. I pray for the day you are not, but it is a blessing to the world, and especially the ocean wildlife, that you are there.🦭👼
