As a former foreign car mechanic specializing in German cars, such as BMW, and Porsche (PORSCH-AH is the correct pronunciation... a porch is what is on your house!) I think that if you went over this car and changed out the fuel cell to a proper gas tank, put in a fresh set of Bosch platinum plugs.... new wires, etc and go over the carbs real well possibly even rebuilding them...... you'll find this car will run completely different and just for peace of mind when you have the plugs out - do a compression test. I am a big fan of you Chad, but like many of your other fans I am begging you to have someone that knows what they are doing work on this gem... and learn from them. Again I am not trying to sound like a hater..... but just like you take the time and teach about the things that you know allow someone to guide you on this beautiful old Porsche... keep up the good work bad Chad and team! Congratulations Jolene on getting one of the cars of your dreams!

Well I'm a vintage Porsche racer and I advise you for a street car to remove the fuel cell and install the regular tank. The fuel cell foam crumbles after a few years and can block a filter instantly. Fuel cells need the foam replaced regularly. Good luck.

Chad, when Jolene started driving she short shifted it which is a no no for an air-cooled engine they need to spin to circulate oil and air to stay cool! Besides the weak battery it's likely to be vapor-locked! VW + Porsche engines need to rev! Do not lug them. Great car!

My guess based on the guy you bought it from it should be in top shape. You should join the Porsche club and get to know the people that can help you. Don’t tinker with it. And don’t fill it with fuel and let it sit without driving it. What a beautiful car. Awesome find Jolene.

Hey you guys, hello from California, I've been a follower of your show since the beginning, I know those flat four engines, for one thing they are cold starters, don't dog it when you drive it, it likes high RPMs. Only burn the highest octane gasoline that you can find, those flat 4's run best on airplane fuel, the higher the octane the better. I use Valvoline racing oil 20-50 only. I build custom racing baja bugs and they have built up engines in them as well. Adjust the valves every year if you keep it. It's basically a VW style engine. That is a clean 66 912 you have, enjoy it, but do as I said.

Chad: fuel cells are only good for 5 to 7 years. After that the bladder inside the metal box starts to fall apart and you need a new fuel cell. You really should not be driving a car with a fuel cell that old. You are risking a major fire

I wouldn't worry about all these fuel cell concerns. Yes, they have an expiry date for racing but the bladder will actually last way longer than any steel tank. The only thing that deteriorates is the foam, which you don't really need if you're not racing. Take the old foam out if it's still in there and run it.

The day you looked at the car the owner had to pump the gas pedal like crazy to get it started. The Carburator probably gunked up. The accelerator pump on the carb might be stuck. Replace filter and if you can get started, i'd run a double strong dose of carburator injector cleaner in the fuel. I'd even drizzle some in the throat and rev it up. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will clear. Check vacum hoses for leaks.

This is basically the same running gear as my old 356C (that I unfortunately sold in the 80s for $2K). These are so easy to work on. If you have gas and spark it should run. If the float needles are stuck, fix them. Barely more complex than a Beetle. I have 3 air-cooled 911s and they are pretty easy to work on. Of course knowing them in detail helps but they're pretty easy. This 912 is really easy. Did Chad divulge what they paid for it? "It's a racecar"! Yeah, but a slow racecar. The idle speed is too high, looked like 2K after warm-up.

Hi Chad, Jolene, & Fina, it is a beautiful Porsche and so is Jolene's smile, she is really going to enjoy having and driving it! I believe it was stored with no gas in it so there should be no crud in the fuel cell! I also believe the previous owner said that being a race car it had no chokes hooked up so you might have to pump the pedal like the previous owner did or pull the air cleaners off and hold the butterflys closed until it fires if you can get at them. I would also pull the dipstick and make sure the oil does not smell of gas because if it gets flooded to badly it will end up in the oil pan! I also noticed in the chat a Mark Armstrong said he worked for Porsche and those are Zenis carbs and you have to pump the gas and that you may think its flooded but its not. Jolene you look like the car was made for you when you were sitting in it, have fun!

Been Sitting (Not Driven) Since 2013!...That Fuel Cell MUST Be Replaced With A Stock Fuel Tank, No Fuel Cells! Most Likely It's Fitted With 2ea. Solex 40P II-4 carburetors.. 1.} Remove & Replace The Fuel Cell With A Stock Fuel Tank, 2.} Remove & Rebuild Those 2 Solex 40P II-4 carburetors, 3.} Disconnect The Fuel Line At The Fuel Tank Fuel Outlet, With The 2 Solex 40P II-4 carburetors Removed From The Intake Manifold...Blow The Fuel Line Out With 30 Psi Of Compressed Air. New Fuel Filters! If You Follow This Protocol, The Fuel System Will Be Free Of Deteriorated Fuel Cell Foam And Other Contaminants.

Chad, the starter should be turning over 3 times as fast and there is something definitely going on with the carb. A needle or the float is stuck in the carburetor...depending on if it is getting too much gas or to little! And everyone is right about getting the RPM's up before shifting...a good VW engine comes alive by running it strong! I think that car was made for Jolene.

Best bang for your money; I think, a big change for your car would be to tighten the Generator belt. Put the batteries on a charger (Take the Generator pully off and pull a couple of shims out and or just replace the belt). Of course there is other things like; A Hot set of Bosch platinums are good too, adjust the valves, take the Distributor rotor off and put a new straight one in that doesn't have the RPM limiter, change the Oil if it's not as clean as the day it went in, Put in the longest Carburetor emulation tubes you can get, Advance the ignition timing as far as you can and or have the distributor set to go to full advance sooner, Remove the vacuum advance and plug, Put those Hemi Heads on (you showed us in the video) and shift between 2000 and 3500 running at 3200. I think, The Carb leak might be gas setting on top of the throttle plate because, someone was afraid of flooding it. Keep in mind; NO CHOKE Porsches don't know what a choke is. Pump it up! Porsches love gas and shut the car off don't let it Idle too long! Also, personal favorites; Iridium is even stronger than platinum. It shares the same benefits over copper as platinum, but it is said to be eight times stronger than platinum, and it has a higher melting point so it can handle the hottest, highest-performing engines I think, the Platinums are less likely to fuel foul.

You clearly don’t know what “running good” means. It’s too late to tell you now, but you shouldn’t have driven it until it was fixed. Short shifting an air cooled engine will over heat it. Over reving an air cooled engine when it’s not getting the proper fuel mixture is just as bad!

The Porsche engine is really similar to a VW and they do not run right if it isn’t charging well. One suggestion is to convert it over to an alternator kit and replace the generator not to expensive to swap it out. The starting issue is likely the carbs, may want to check the distributor to see if it has point style ignition if so swap that out for electronic. The engine as is should be a fun little driver the bigger race parts will hurt drivability and run the risk of running too hot. Beautiful car, congratulations

I'm going to say there's probably a clogged air bleed on a carb, it's setting up a siphon and gas is flowing from the float bowl even when it's parked. If you remove the air cleaner and look into the carb throat (engine off) you may see gas seeping from a transfer slot or port. If the throttle plate is wet after being parked, there's your problem, a clogged air bleed. Edit: Air bleeds are usually a brass ball pressed into holes on the sides of the carb body, they're not removable, all you can do is soak them and hit them with compressed air. Jet type bleeds, such as with Holley carbs, are easily removed.
@harveyweidman846
@harveyweidman846 2 месяца назад
I agree with the comments about having someone look at it that knows them however, Nate is capable of learning with the books that you have and the internet help. The carbs sound good except for the high idle. High idle could be a idle adjustment or timing, fresh fuel may help too. The carbs adjust more like a motorcycle than a regular car. I start a 912 when hot with partial throttle. Experiment, they are either need more throttle of they are flooded. Both can be started with a strong battery. Your battery is junk, they start much better when they are turning over faster. Like others say, old fuel cells are not good to have when they start to fail. New gas tanks are cheap (for Porsche prices). When they sit for a while, the fuel pump needs a lot of battery to refill the carbs.

Ok, Jolene and Chad, First, start looking for a VW buse. Just for the motor, the VW came with a 1500 cc motor in the early years, then they went to a 1600 cc some of the 50s was 1200cc,don't quite me the bus was a 1835 cc or some were around there. The Porsche was about a 1990cc. The difference was the stroke and the jugs[ cylinder ]. There were 4 bolts that took the jugs off to make them bigger or smaller , to change the cc of the motor. The bus block was machined to accept the longer stroke crankshaft . The 1600 cc could be machined to get up to about 2200 cc. But the bus block was a little heavier. I use to have a bunch of books on them 30+ years ago. If I remember right, there is only 4 bolts that hold the motor in . Could change a motor in about 40 minutes.

"My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends..." words of Janis Joplin. Jolene is way ahead with a Corvette AND a Porsche. I'm assuming there is not much documentation from the last owner as to what was changed/modified other than the exhaust. Jolene, I would take the advice of experts regarding the fuel cell etc. The 912 model got hot a while back as the prices for the 911 went through the roof. Your car being a former race car I would assume had numerous mods over it's life. This car looks great and I know that roll bar wasn't an easy install but it was done so well. Replace the rubber fuel lines yesterday, it would be a damn shame to see it go up in flames. The carb looking wet is a red flag not to ignore, it was leaking oil or likely gas backing it out of the garage onto the trailer. It’s gotta be dry, raw fuel on the cases, heads, exhaust or distributor/plug wires is begging for trouble. Adjust the valves, you’ll notice a big change if they were out of spec. Sounds like an exhaust leak as well.

Might be an idea to get Nathan to fit an electric fuel pump if possible. The standard for the 912 is a mechanical one. Could be a diaphragm problem. Or post 1972 there could be injector issues, conversley it could be carb issues if it's pre 1972. Either way it should get some attention. 👍👍

My first GOOD car was a 1966 912 Porsche. I paid $2,000.00 US Dollars back in 1973. Jolene, I love your Porsche ❤️

After a 10 year sitting, You need to Drain the Fuel tank, put in fresh gas, have Nate clean the Carb's and change fuel filters, you will be good. And of course change the Oil and Filter, and check the Anti Freeze.

The antifreeze is in a jug at the parts store. They are Air Cooled. This is a glorified VW.

Lol. Old Porsches don’t have antifreeze man. It’s a VW air cooled engine. You rev the piss out of them as you drive it to keep the engine cool.

Well the first thing is the high idle its either a vacum leak or a stuck choke but the fact you said you noticed fuel around one of the carbs says somthing you either have a bad seal or the needle in the float is stuck not allowing the proper amount of fuel . Basically its flooding carbs will do this if theres junk in the carb bowls and the extra fuel dumping into the carb would also make it idle high my money is on that carb that was leaking cheers its a sweet whip Jolene oh and sometimes you need to pump the pedal to get some fuel into the motor if the chokes aren't working properly .....

Take the quote from Ford vs Ferrari movie. That’s a sports car. You need to rev the piss out of that car between every shift. And also keep the air ducts on the car and fins on the engine block very clean to keep her cool.

If the car hasn’t been changed to an electric fuel pump yet - try this and it may help. Keep a close eye on the alternator/ fan belt. If it’s not tight the engine will overheat. If the engine overheats, change the oil ASAP.

Anytime something is flooded regardless of the carburetors and car, you hold the accelerator wide open so the squirters don’t squirt and you get all air and no more fuel.

I watched the previous owner pump the gas pedal about 12 times before it would run so It could be that the choke on the carbs isn’t working.

No chokes if the original Solex carbs. Normal idle once warmed up is 800-900RPM and would require feathering the throttle for the 1st few minutes after cold start.
