It has always been my (Jolene) dream to own a Porsche... and during Bad Chad's daily search for project cars he came across this 1966 Porsche 912 for sale. It's a former concours winning vintage race car that apparently raced against famous drivers such as Hurley Hawood and Brian Redman. It has since been converted back to a street car but still has the racing steering wheel, roll bar and fuel cell installed. It’s been stored since 2013. We made the venture to come take a look at it in person and see if we can make a deal.. or possibly do some trading💰

As a porsche enthusiast for over 45 years i have some advice for you Chad. You are out of your area of expertise here. You havent checked any of the necessary points of interest on this car. So you need to get a qualified Porsche specialist to check it out. These cars are problematic with a weak reverse gear ( popping out of reverse while backing up). Also you need to check the crankshaft end play( this shows engine case and bearing wear). And this is only the beginning of the things you need to check. If you get burnt don't complain because you don't know what you are doing here. There are also wiring and rust areas that need checked.

I had a 912E. It was like driving a mildly tuned Beetle. I have 3 air-cooled 911s and they are a whole different experience. Has mounts on the shock towers for a Monte Carlo bar. My smuggler's boxes are filled with A/C components. I know these cars inside/out and I have rebuilt several rust buckets. The toughest area to fix, for me, was the rear seat, heel panel and wheelhouse area. The front latch panel, suspension pan, and battery tray are comparatively easy.

There is a ton of literature on the 912 and its power plant and the rust tendencies of these cars. It's worth researching before you do anything with it. It's a great resource. Most other cars do not have such a wealth of information to fall back on. You need not operate in the dark when you are figuring out what to do with it.

I would bet the cam is wore out on 1 lobe. Very common on these motors. You can get a beast of an aftermarket motor for this. I had a 71 914 it would corner vrty well until the tires lost grip. Those skinny bias ply just did not stick. Very fun car not fast at all.

The cylinder came around with a little temp . The car has been sitting . Nothing a tune up and some road time won’t clear up . Absolutely gorgeous car !! Love it !! So happy for y’all !!

Red paint takes a beating by the sun the sun makes the clear coat blister over time. That's probably why you see tiny bubbles everywhere.

LOL, I had my 70 Z28 painted factory cranberry red but in Centari with a clear coat in 1985 and it still looks fresh and I drive the car alot. No bubbles cracks or blisters, so I don’t know what you’re talking about with the sun and red paint.

Simple engine test. Grab the flywheel with both hands. Push it fwd and backwards. Any movement indicates engine wear/problems...

You can't grab the flywheel with the engine in the car. Ya need to grab the crank pulley and try to move it back and forth. End play should be only about 6 thousand's this will show excessive case and bearing wear which if excessive will mean engine overhaul and align boring the case

Cage out, race mods out. Fresh engine in and check every other critical part. Keep it stock and use it well. I have a '73T 911 6 cylinder since 1988; there is a lot to learn! Good luck getting it to a sweet spot.

I passed on two of these in the late 90s for $1200 each! What a mistake on my part. Who knew that they would have gone stratosphereic price wise? I had a bipolar wife at the time otherwise they would have been mine. Oh well, NA Miatas are what I'm focusing on now. My Porsche days are behind me due to their prices, going stratosphereic. I hope Jolene enjoys her new acquisition. They are special cars.

as an aircooled owner of VW for 15 years 4 engines one gear box its a hobby So put it on a dyno its top end ?? guess newcoil a complete ignition replacement strip & service te carbs new exhaust & manifold its an engine out for sure my thoughts paint is linked to the primer I have repinted my VW t2 three or four times so cut a deal this guy is not dumb my guess is he knows the problem :-)) trailer it home make a start keep 5k for the engine rebuild then sort out the bare mental paint job its a long term project its a labour of love or hate :-))

@@mr.m325 Definitely. Much less weight behind the rear axle, so handling and balance was much better. Gearing suited the power band, so not actually much slower. Oh, and the 76 2.7 only had 148bhp, where the 912 had 102, so not double, but the 911 weighed an extra 106kg (over 11% increase) that was mostly at the rear of the car.

i was a vw/porsche mechanic in the 70's and picked up a 356 with bad motor and put in a relatively stock vw motor in it (before all the new aftermarket big bore kits available) and it ran so well hard to know the difference. Seems much of feel is in suspension and transmission gearing

This isn't a Porsche steering wheel. It is a momo aftermarket wheel with a VW/Porsche steering wheel adapter the original steering wheel would cost 20 times what a mono wheels costs

True, these Weber carburetors do not have chokes. From the carbs down thru the intakes to the heads are a straight shot. Just give it a pump, then let off and crank the motor. It will need to warm up tho.

The paint blistering looks like it could be bug spray i.e. someone applied it standing next to the car and the overspray landed on the paint.

The valuable thing to do. Is slid the earlier 6 cylinder, in stead of that 4. The 4 you can easily sell to 356 owners, you want the 911 6 in there the early one. The trans mission is already set up for a 6. Need to talk to a Porsche expert like Rod Emory.
