thank you everybody, i hope you enjoy this one :D incredibly special album *if you love my reactions, pls consider supporting me over on patreon. i put about 1-2 work days per week into running my yt & patreon, on top of other life responsbilities. i don't get money from ads here on yt.*
Okay picture this I am a twenty-nine-year- Tool OGT (ORIGINAL GANSTER ToolArmy) and I have a channel almost 1000 Subs I have been going down the John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes diesel cold chisel red gum Australian Rabbit Hole Oh Yeah Olivia, INXS ACDC lol Musical talent as vast as the bloody bush 😂 yea yea I'm already loss of diction spoke proper Aussie 😅 Anyway I thought it was really cool about an Australian artist to just found Tool 🌀 and POOF here you arrive
You seem to like reacting to complete albums. You may like the band Queensryche. "Operation Mindcrime" was a very interesting story. Not to mention the singers vocals.
Do not apologize for interpreting the lyrics personally!! Maynard says that he intentionally doesn't tell people why he wrote the songs, he wants you to interpret it and find personal meaning.
@@kirawasareactor This album has so many layers - lyrically, instrumentally, production wise, mixing wise. I still find new small details. I promise you will NEVER get tired of it. You definitely should hear all the albums, or at least Aenima and 10.000 days. Lots of treasures left for you to find.👍😉👍
@@kirawasareactor Tool's latest album, "Fear Inoculum", is pretty epic. Hard to say if it's better than Lateralus, but it could be, depending on the day, lol.
The story of Parabol/Parabola was the record label wanted more songs on the new album. Since Parabola was pretty long they choose to split it instead of write another song. 😂
Cried a little watching you discover this incredible album....half because you were so excited and half because i wish more than anything that i could hear it again for the first time. This is in my top 3 albums of all time ....they are so rich and full and so well produced that every track is a musical feast...
The day I discovered this album with a friend was on its launch day in France, we were in a shop where you could check (with headphones) some newly released albums before buying. We spent the entire afternoon there, I believe we made it spin entirely at least 3 time in a row! Simply breathtaking album.
You have a great internal rhythm. Not many people have the ability to keep a pulse through odd time signatures like you consistently demonstrate, especially being unfamiliar with the music. Thanks for the reactions!
Just for context…. The song Ticks and Leeches was a big middle finger to the record company that wanted a “heavier hit” a radio friendly heavy hit… so they gave them a heavy song with a 3 minute interlude 😂. Just another way to troll the people in charge
Basically the same story for Maynard’s Dick, they wanted a alt rock radio hit, so Tool wrote one perfectly, and Maynard made the lyrics all about his bird 😂
I was there!! Fantomas opened. Incredible. Similar elation to those in religion… just… real. 😅 Edit: ALSO I’ve gone “floating” in a tank while blaring this album start to finish… fantastic experience!
Tool live in 2002(I think it was) in Cincinnati(I think it was?) was THE first concert I ever attended. The first....ever. And it was THAT show. I think Meshuggah opened up if I remember. I didn't stick around cuz it was LOUD and I wanted to save my ears for Tool. And then Tool opens with The Grudge and they're SO MUCH LOUDER than Meshuggah lol... Transcendent night for sure though....
Maynard James Keenan (Lyrics, Singer, Synth, Satir), Adam Jones (Lead Electric Guitar, Synth), Justin Chancellor (Bass Guitarist), Danny Carrey (Drummer, Tabla, Gong, Percussive Synth) Danny is known as the Octopus because he can play 4 rhythm with each of his limbs at the same time without missing the beat.
Parabol is such a beautiful song. It gives me chills every time I listen to it. I feel the lyrics so deeply Parabol is like being stuck in a feeling and Parabola is like the catharsis of letting it out
For anyone as mezmurized by Danny Carey's drumming as I am, check out my active drum transcription of Lateralus (the song): ru-vid.com/group/PLeaK9tcJzll3J89tut-aSN91hmXLrOwL8
Parabol -> Parabola having similar lyrics but such different energies behind them was amazing to me the first time I heard and still is of course. It spoke to me about the dynamic nature of emotions, and the power of music and energy to transform or bring out a different perspective on the same subject matter. Especially cause I feel like language can only scratch the surface of the human experience, so to me it's kinda like using instrumentals to show two sides of the same coin. Anyway lol getting too deep aye 🤣 Also Disposition is my favourite and I'm glad you think it's beautiful too!!
100%, all emotions are a spectrum with light & dark to them. e.g. grief can be such a beautiful & horrific emotion all at the same time. everything has a pro and con. TOOL is amazing at searching through the grey area. yes disposition is top 3
@@kirawasareactor love a dynamic moment. that's why we're radiohead fans too lol thom gets me so hyped with 15 step and bodysnatchers and then the realisation that all I need & reckoner are creeping closer sets in LMAO
Ticks & Leeches was a response to the record company telling them to make something more radio-friendly and like the other hard rock at the time. That breakdown in the middle was specifically to make it not playable on the radio.
I don't see this take often enough. My favorite (even from this album) changes depending on what I am thinking/feeling, BUT the lyrics to Reflection? *chef's kiss*
TOOL Army: Assemble! There's a major 5 vibe on this album (some songs are in 6 and 7 and other bits and bobs but 5/4 and 5/8 are the most common time signatures on this album. Heard this when it came out. Blew my mind. Saw them twice that year and then caught them on the 10,000 days tour. My god they're incredible. I never get bored or complacent when listening to Tool. They always impress and melt your face. Was waiting for you to get to Ticks and Leeches given how much you love the drums 😂 pound for pound, Danny Carey is the greatest Rock/Metal drummer; so musical and yet a virtuoso. Adam Jones never overplays, he writes just enough to serve the song and that's it. Superb. A quick note for your mic audio, add a low cut to remove all the baning as you hit the table...
it's too bad you skipped Ænima because it's so rocking and this album added so much and took it to another level. It was really amazing back in the day when this album came out and we had all been used to Undertow and Ænima and we were all absolutely blown AWAY. I saw them many times on the Lateralus tour and one time I went by myself in Austin and when Maynard kept chanting "I must keep reminding myself of this" I just started weeping. It was odd but it was also really cool to see them alone and without worry.
I looove your reactions, I've been waiting for this album reaction for a while. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and love for music, I find it really comforting.
Ticks and Leaches was incorporated at the request of the record label as they felt another heavy track was required to ensure Tool’s core fanbase was satisfied. It can be deemed to be slightly out of place on the album but with its quieter interlude I think it still fits beautifully, although as I age, I wonder what the album would have been had the band had full control.
Lateralus is in my top 4 albums of all time, and the T&L track placement is the only one sticking point I've ever had with it. I've found that I prefer it directly after the grudge, both sonically (the drum energy at the end of the grudge to the drum energy at start of T&L), and conceptually (T&L *is* the grudge that the band is letting go off, through the song itself). Then Eon Blue Apoc is the calming aftermath before proceeding to the rest of the album in the order the band originally envisioned without T&L.
This album is profound and one of the most impactful albums of my life. I'm glad you find enjoyment in the beauty that Tool created in this music and Maynards lyrics. Very much about self reflection
Thanks for this! I appreciate watching peoples first time hearing Tool. I like that you keep it chopped a bit for length and still get a feel for your whole journey. Keep it up!
This was the album that saved my life and caused me to view life in a much different way.....Maynard laid it all out there for us to take in, required us to think, and there was no wrong interpretation, they are to do for you whatever you need them to do....LOVE this reaction!!!! Goosebumps and squealing with delight!!! Fantastic Kira!!! TOOL forever!
Love that you have House of Leaves on your shelf. Have you listened to Mark Danielewski's sister, Poe's album "Haunted"? About half the songs reference Mark's book and "Hey Pretty" actually has him reading from the book in the song. Rest of the songs are about her dealing with her father's passing and are cut with recordings of their father speaking.
Your involuntary squeals and gasps at the most musically and creatively exciting moments are just the best. And oddly affirming...because you literally do it at all the exact moments that have always given _me_ goosebumps, but sometimes other people seem to not take notice of. Love your energy and giddy passion! It's infectious.
Ticks and Leeches has eventually become one of my favorite Tool songs. I always loved the lyrics and the drums as it seems you did but the context adds so much to it. The song is pretty much written about and to an executive at the record label who said that they’re new album wasn’t sounding hard enough. Maynard responded with hard and screaming but threw threw the come-down in there as the ultimate middle finger
I think most people who like this album will always remember the 1st time they listened to it in its entirety. I still remember that placid afternoon and it was 21 years ago.
I was about 16, parents divorced, moved around the country and moved from friend group to friend group. When I heard Lateralus I knew I'd found something special and it literally changed my life. It has got me through tough times. Lateralus has and will be a good friend to me 💪
Kira if you liked this album then you need to hear them preform it live! The best one is on RU-vid by the channel Tool Achieves it called Tool Live Denver 2002 Remastered. It has great quality and their performance is god like.
Great reaction vid. Such an amazing album. Can't imagine life without TOOL's music. And you're personality is magical kira, people in your life must adore you. Thank you for these happy fun reactions. Spiral out 🌀🌀🌀👁🤘🏼
Personally one I was waiting patiently for. I made sure not to look at any comments prior to the watch to experience the unvarnished reaction. I must say it was spectacular! I felt joy and was pleased to see your experience. A genuine treat to watch and I appreciate your perspective on the album. Each album hits different. I'll look forward to each one in due time. Hope you're settled in well.
every one talking about how danny carey is a great drummer. yees he is. but as a guitar player adam jones is one of my favorite guitar player. never over playing. allways adding creative stuff to a track complimating the band in such a artistic and unique way.
you should check out the album "welcome to sky valley" by Kyuss. The bassist of the album scott reeder plays his bass with the strings upsidedown, like you, he also auditioned for tool, when their first bassist left.
If you like the drummer (Danny Carey) you should listen to the studio album version of Pneuma, which is from their most recent album, then watch - Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT). It's a live drum cam, so you get to watch one of the greatest rock drummers of all time tear up a huge kit, super sick.
Hey! Love your taste in music. Radiohead and Tool are my favorite bands as well. Lateralus is what got me into Tool. I spiraled down the Tool rabbit hole and never got out 😁😵
In my humble opinion, this album belongs on the list of Wonders of the World. And I can’t help but notice that you haven’t reacted to Ren yet. I really like your style and enthusiasm…would love to see you go down the rabbit hole.
You always bring the energy and positivity to your videos! :) Have you heard of a band called Ozric Tentacles? If you like trippy space sounds and albums that take you on journeys then you might enjoy their work. I'd say there are some similarities to Tool with them and they are also working through re-mastering their catalogue. Anyhow, keep up the great work!
Best album of the best band EVER! Thank you so much for reacting to this and being real and raw. Tool alone has helped me out on my spiritual journey. I can relate to them beyond what others just hear. It's an incredible feeling.
The last track is a recording from The Art Bell talk radio show. It’s a real conversation that happened between a caller and Art Bell. The call got “cut off” mysteriously just like the caller said it would. If you look it up you can find it. It’s really kinda creepy given the context
I just came across this video and am excited for the reaction to what is probably my favorite of their albums. I had to ask though... is that House of Leaves on your bookshelf? If so, it is pretty funny you're listening to something that asks you to spiral out!
I saw Tool 🔨 in 2019 & they had one of my favourite 80's bands Killing Joke open for them. It was an awesome show & The Tool fanatics were fairly receptive of Killing Joke. 🎸
Hey David, how are you going? :) Nice to see some emojis in the comments as always. I've never heard of Killing Joke! so many bands for me to still listen to. I love it
@@kirawasadiver I just saw The Cure & they were in excellent form 👌 .. Robert Smith has preserved his voice really well. I saw that Slowdive had an Australian / New Zealand tour booked a few months out. One word , GO !
Finally! An appropriate reaction!!! Well done 5:53 just wait… the grudge is one of my all time favorites. But this entire album is just… flavor town 34:57 so glad I stopped by. Thank you 38:55 Reflection was my original obsession
Everything about your reaction and thoughts were **chefs kiss** - I'm commenting to say that another of my favourite bands has a great lyric that I think you'd appreciate: "your melody is my remedy". Band is an electro-blues band called My Baby
I just discovered your channel because of this video, YT recommended it to me... Thankfully! I'd love to see you react to my favourite prog metal band Opeth.
I got into Tool in 1996 when I was in High School and a friend played Aenima for me. It became an incredibly important record for me at the time, and got me through some difficult things. I picked this album up at Capitol Records in my hometown of Juneau, Alaska the day it dropped in May, 2001. Took it straight home, smoked a bowl, and popped the disc in. I had goosebumps on my left eyebrow. I mean, like, everywhere else too. But I really noticed them on my left eyebrow. Anyway, 27 years after first diving into the deep end with this band, they are still my favorite. Even got my two oldest kids into them, and they still listen to them as adults. I would strongly recommend checking out Pushit, both the studio version on Aenima and the live version from Salival (which is only found on RU-vid unless you own the Salival CD, which is pretty much Unobtanium these days). Finally, in conclusion, the top of my red bull can (which my doctor and my wife have both told me not to drink) smells like a wet dog, which is really weird.
Watching you experience "Faaip De Oiad" for the first time, added with your following a transcription of what was actually spoken during the track, and I realized its effect on me was not quite as acute as it used to be. But not by a lot. The feverish anticipation leading up to the May 2001 release of 'Lateralus' almost defied comparison. I bought it the day it came out - and between the wealth of fan praise shared here already, and the true joy & amazement you experienced listening to 'Lateralus' and falling in love with the music (which I'm certain many of us vicariously experienced through you, a beautiful side effect of *reaction videos* ), everyone has said it best already. Twenty-two years later and I still stop the CD after the conclusion of "Triad". Not because of a negative reaction to "Faaip De Oiad" (IE not hate, nor thinking it's filler, nor that it hasn't purpose) but because that final track so disturbed and unsettled me the first time I heard it that ONE time was absolutely enough. That cacophonous sound Tool put to this real phone call into the Art Bell radio show, the voice on the line genuinely terrified and near mental collapse, then the line went dead, the caller never identified nor heard from again - "Faaip De Oiad" so viscerally fucked me up my first listen that I'm all good with the album ending after "Triad" and turning it off. Without feeling I'm cheating myself of something, I'm OK with that. Welcome to the Tool Army and spiral out Kira...
Aww....I almost wish you _hadn't_ had the text available for the final "song." It's best heard picking up every other word. I remember the first time I heard that track...in 2002, in my freshman dorm room at night. It scared the crap out of me. But not _as much_ as the final moments on Undertow....with that monologue going on about how "now red was your color....and those little people were yours too...etc." Gave me total alien abduction vibes and the first time I heard that, when I must have been 16....I remember feeling genuinely disturbed and afraid to be alone. It's a lovely memory now....to realize mere music, mere sounds, can DO that to you...make you feel such emotions.
I trust someone in the comments here or on PATREON already mentioned/explained the whole Fibbunaci Sequence rearranging of the song order that makes the album flow better and more fitting in the changeovers from song to song.
