Video #499: A dip treatment that will help to prevent unprofessional looking nicks and in your wire jewelry pieces. More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
* Tool Magic - Rubber Type dip for the working surfaces of jewelry pliers and tools.
* Marks, dents and dings on wirework in polymer clay jewelry looks unprofessional.
* Coating helps prevent tools from marring and denting soft wire and metal.
* Coating has a thick paint like consistency.
* Clean tools well with rubbing alcohol before applying Tool Magic.
* Stir Tool Magic well before dipping tools into it.
* Dip tool tips only. Do not go as far as the hinge.
* Set aside to dry for 2 - 3 hours (on edge of a bucket, coffee cup, etc) so that the pliers tips do not touch each other while drying.
* Product will shrink to surface as it dries.
* Tool Magic can easily be peeled off when it shows signs of wear, so that you can then apply a fresh coat.
* Temporary coating, won't harm expensive tools.
* I really like this product. Makes it easier to get a nice professional finish on wire jewelry projects.

Great information. Thanks for sharing. I bought some a while back and never got around to using it. I wouldn't have known to stir it up well and may have not thought about cleaning my pliers, though it seems like common sense. I'm going to use it tonight because I recently noticed a couple of marks on some earwires and don't want that to happen again

This is wonderful. My husband has a protective product to go on tools, but it will dry out in the container fairly quickly so you have to coat everything you want within a few days. Also, it's permanent. Thank you for this info.

Hi, I use this tool magic product and after while it gets thick. Is there a way to think it out so I can get as much use out of it as possible???

I've been using Tool Magic for a while and it works great. Can you demonstrate how to use metal leaf on clay?

I've tried a similar product and I always get drips at the ends of my pliers. How do you avoid this?

Can it be thinned

Hi Cindy, I was wondering what to do to the inside of pliers to give them more grit. I have worn the 'teeth' off the insides of them from use, and they slip when I try to close my jump rings.
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 10 лет назад
Hi Karina I Use this stuff. It makes your pliers grip beautifully without marring your jump rings. A good pair of jewelry pliers does not have any teeth for that reason, but it can make opening thicker gauge jump rings more difficult. This will solve that problem.

I love this product, works very well. The only issue I have with it is I am a little over half of my jar used up, and it has become very thick. I have bought a new container which I haven't opened yet, but I was wondering if something can be used to thin it. I thought maybe mineral spirits or something. I have been afraid to try, because I am far from a chemist and I don't want to create some toxic chemical reaction or something. Does anyone else have any experience with thinning or know what would work. Thank you, Melodie

Hi Melodie Fairburn I found this info on the Net: "Thin Tool Magic with toluene, xylene and naphtha." Hope that helps!

My tool magic is couple years old and is very thick and does not dry flat on my tools. Is there a way to dilute this ?
@PolymerClayTutor

Sorry I didn't see this and you probably already found the answer... but yes you can thin Tool Magic with Toulene, Naptha or Zylene. These are solvents that you can find in an autobody shop or hardware store. Hope that helps!

is that the same as the Plasti-Dip stuff they'e been selling forever in hardware stores? (I think that's the name of it)

Hi ***** That thought crossed my mind as well. Haven't seen that stuff for years though... at least in my hardware store. I remember it came in tall skinny cans which would be trickier for dipping pliers into but if it is the same stuff and it was cheaper, there is no reason you couldn't work around the tall can issue.

I just used Tool Magic on my tools and it is extremely thick. I stirred it several times, but this didn't seem to help. I doubt I will be able to do any detailed work with my tools because they are so thick now due to this so-called "Tool Magic". Any suggestions?

Gina :) We have many followers from Australia and the shipping can really drive the price of everything up for you guys. I am not familiar with the site The Crafty Cripple mentioned but hopefully you can find a local source that isn't too expensive (or spendy as my Aussi friend says.) :)
