How I machined an extension arbor to fit onto my South Bend Tool Post Grinder to make it capable of doing inside diameter grinding.

The nice thing about having a machine shop is that you an just whip stuff like this up on your own!

I picked up a South Bend grinder just like that one at the swapmeet and will have to make the same arbor extension. thanks for the thorough video on the job.

+Ed Ginsberg My pleasure. I hope that you got a good deal on the grinder - they are nice to have around!

I'm just starting to watch your videos (from the first one). I use a desktop PC and run my audio through an amplifier on my table. I just switch to "Mono" on my amp when only one speaker is outputting, and then I get audio out of both speakers. I also use "Stereo" mode on my amp when you are standing to the right side of the lathe gearbox, and adjust the balance all the way to the right. This eliminates the sound of the lathe motor/gearbox, which is on the left, and allows me to listen to you more clearly.. Thank you for your plainly explained step-bystep videos when setting up and running your lathe. Bill

+billsmini10 Glad to have you on board! As to the sound, I had some issues with some of my earlier videos in that sound was only being recorded on one of the stereo channels. We get this fixed eventually!

Hi Keith, I love your videos. I watch all of them and learn techniques from you and other fine machinists. Unfortunately I'm having audio issues with this and the previous video. I have audio on the opening and ending scenes but nothing in between. Please keep your videos coming .I really enjoy them!

Cont: Just saw that the number of letters were limited... I wanted to also say I really enjoyed your delivery of your explanation while you work so that you're easily understood I used to have the job of helping tech school kids with their early hands-on experience... I bet they'd do well watching your videos... Thank you for sharing! :o] O,

That's a nice tool post grinder, and a good find! I just came upon your channel in the past few days... Looks like you have a fun job... I'm a retired job shop machinist I got my start in 1980 I've done a lot of close work and some machine rebuilding way scraping, you name it! I did automotive machine work for 4 years before that with a good bit of drag race work... I really love watching machining videos of all types, and bringing back fond memories. I look forward to seeing more here! :o] O,

Hi Keith Great vid, enjoy you presentation method and obvious knowledge and mastery of the material. I'm new to your site and am slowly catching up on the old posts. I notice several comments are about losing audio. I've noticed your intro music, as well as the inserted ads, are in stereo (loud) while your presentation is in mono (much lower volume). I use headsets so the change is quite apparent. This could be what is causing some folks problems if they are using their built-in computer speakers.

I use a tailstock threader. They work well and I even made my own for the larger dies and it keeps the carpal tunnel at ease. :-) I’m looking at making a tool post grinder (extra axis) out of a 2.2kw air cooled spindle and vfd I have sitting here useless. Out getting ideas and looking for a source for grinding attachments that can reach in and grind an mt3 so I can accommodate my build to accept something that will work for my needs.

Thank you for making these videos. I love watching them and learning more about how the hardware, tools and machinery that we use every day are made. I am not a machinist so sorry for what is probably an obvious question: Why can't you just use your lathe to do inside grinding? Could you advance a work piece into an arbor held in the center of the chuck? Is it because the lathe can't turn at the required RPMs, there is no suitable way to advance a work piece into the tool, or it's just bad practice to be grinding stuff around those close tolerance lathe tool surfaces? Thanks, really enjoy these videos that you share with us! Masterful work and love the attention to detail (such as making that 3/8 thread!)

You are not the first person to tell me that you are having problems with the audio on my videos. However, most people are telling me it is just fine - and when I just tested it on my computer running off of RU-vid, again, I could hear it just fine. I am not sure what to tell you - I suspect that it may be something on your end or something different about your platform. Are you watching on a PC, a Mac, a tablet, or what?

So would a person be able to rig up a die grinder and do the same job?

Wondering why you went with 3/8" - 24 (UNF) instead of 3/8" - 16 (UNC) on the shank? I've got loads of the UNC stuff in my shop, as it's used by the standard clamping sets, while to get a fine thread nut, I'd need to make a trip to the hardware store... maybe your shop supplies are better stocked than my garage! I doubt that the slight difference in clamping force between the two pitches would make any difference - maybe it's to cope with variability in wheel thicknesses from different suppliers?
